Vanity 6 40th Anniversary I know I'm early on this, but I hope they will release this like they did for The Time's first album.
I know it's a stretch to get the SECOND album, but at least the album with edits and everything would be great. Do we need to do a change.org? Does anyone listen?
I just rediscovered the long version of "He's So Dull." I think it's a better version but of course I have a vinyl rip.

I'm not optimistic, but god I hope so! Everything Vanity is pure gold. Still hoping there's a Vanity vocal of Extraloveable out there... would love to hear Brenda on No Call U!

yeah,I really wish that they will do something special with the Vanity 6 album. It has always been one of my favorites.

This is one of the projects that I'm most interested in hearing.According to Princevault, this is what the second album might have been:
Sex Shooter Vibrator G-Spot Moral Majority Velvet Kitty Cat Promise To Be True Wet Dream Cousin
I'm thinking that a second V6 album would have been more outrageous and more provocative than the Apollonia 6 album

Don't forget about Boy (later Girl)!*
*I wouldn't be surprised if Wet Dream Cousin isn't the instrumental backing to Boy -- too many parallels to Girl (timing/placement of breakdowns, key changes, etc.)... [Edited 4/11/22 8:05am]

That just blew my mind about "Boy." I haven't checked Prince Vault Vanity entries in a while. I would love to hear this one too! That second album needs to come out, just give us boxes of everything please!

I agree. I want all of the Vanity 6 / Apollonia 6 / Brenda Bennett / Jill Jones demos released more than anything else from this era.

I would definitely like to see more things from the associated artists/protégés.Their albums deserve to be remastered and bonus tracks added.

.
I would already be very happy with a single cd containing both the V6 and A6 original albums. But of course, an added disc of unreleased outtakes would be fantastic. . Edit: Plus all available official remixes, of course (-: So, a re-release in the vein of Cherry Red, Wounded Bird, Funkytowngrooves... . [Edited 4/15/22 3:30am]

. Vanity's two solo albums would also make a great "two-fer" cd! .

That too! I love both, but Wild Animal has the edge for me.

Theres so much more going on here with his associated artists and getting things released. I think one issue with the VANITY solo stuff is on Motown, and good luck with that. I agree this would be an amazing double package of both records, remaster it, remixes, etc...its a no brainer and there are labels that do this WELL but they have to have access and there in lies the issues, and especially with PRINCE and things he wrote and played on which was basically everything, there is something in the way, I have heard that those brought in to "prepare" things for the estate releases have not even gone near associated artists releases. But this is not a shock because even when PRINCE was alive there was never a plan to put this stuff out. There are labels out there that do these things for tons of artists and access to the recordings is what they need, its been done for so many like Sheena Easton, Laura Branigan, tons of 80's artists like Berlin, and there is also the label Rock Candy which too pride in doing tons of 70's and 80s rock reissues on everyone from White Lion to Survivior and toto to Rick Springfield, because there is some of a demand for it and many times the actual ORIGINAL label does not want to have to do it but they turn the masters over and let that label do the work for them, pressing, remastering liner notes, books whatever. THere has not been ANYONE hinting at any Prince associated artist getting this treatment.

That's not actually quite true -- Howe gave an interview within the last year or two that they were looking into a release of "adjacent" artists' material. I think this may have been a French interview? The rest RE Vanity's solo efforts and Motown are spot-on, though; I'm not sure why anyone here would think that any of that would be released by the Primce Estate in any way, shape or form!

What gives me a bit of hope here is that in the past years, several non-Paisley Park albums by (former) associates have been reissued in expanded cd editions by specialised labels. Andre Cymone's and Wendy & Lisa's albums come to mind. Even Apollonia's solo album received this treatment fairly recently. Of course, the original label owning the master tapes has to be willing to cooperate, and this might be varying amongst the various labels. A thing that bothers me is that the cd market is still shrinking compared to the vinyl market. This may make chances smaller that we will see the associate artist albums being reissued on cd in expanded editions. For me, the cd is the only worthwhile physical medium for archive re-releases. Let's hope the cd will become hip again in the upcoming years, which is not completely unthinkable since fashion trends normally have a cycle time of 20-30 years.

Cherry Red, the specialized label that reissued expanded editions of Wendy & Lisa’s albums said they asked for a license to rerelease Vanity’s solo albums and were refused. That was years ago though (around the time of the Wendy & Lisa reissues) so maybe circumstances have changed since then.

Well the MOTOWN stuff I don't know recall what if anything he wrote, I'm trying to remember WILD ANIMAL stuff and Skin on Skin but from what I recall he had no credit in those records, and getting Motown to do anything for its artists whomever they arem isnt going to happen. Best bet would be if some label like the label that got Sheena Eastons stuff and Laura Branigan and others would get their hands on the Motown stuff, but I have a feeling its never coming out again.

Knowing Motown and how they do business, good luck ever seeing the Vanity solo stuff. Even longtime members of that label have a bad taste in their mouths about them.

When I saw St. Paul Peterson back in 2020 right before the pandemic he played a show here in NYC, and he spoke a lot during the show about his work with Prince and the Family and solo records, and how he even forgot things he played on that came out or people asked about. But he did say when talking after the show to some people there, he mentioned how he would LOVE to have that Family album reissued and all they did together but calls have never been returned on that matter.

Thats sadly seems to be the case. Mid 80's Motown has a bunch of acts that never even had a CD release at the time let alone a reissue.
El Debarge's first solo album for Motown has never been reissued for a start.
I said it in the other Morris Day thread how bad these assosiated acts have been represented. No Best of for The Time is almost criminal. Prince turned shit down as we know when he was alive, but the estate in these sorta matters seem just as clueless as he seemed to be LOL [Edited 4/19/22 17:16pm]

do you guys think that, maybe the reason that Vanity's solo material hasn't been reissued/remastered is because of her becoming religious later in life? She totally disowned her old persona and image. She was probably ashamed of songs like "Pretty Mess"
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yes. I think this is the reason.

. I'm not really sure about this... not only Vanity's Motown albums were not re-issued during the 90's/00's, but other albums by former Prince-associates, like BrownMark and Mazarati didn't get a re-release by Motown either. I guess it wasn't a priority for the label, especially since these albums were never very successful to begin with. . [Edited 4/24/22 13:28pm]

That is a possibility BUT if she didnt own the masters, which she probably did not I am guessing she really would have no say, or in this case anyone handling her affairs would have NO leg to stand on in court. Artists do things they later in their career think stinks or whatever but that little label you were on is going to milk what they can. I mean the band HEART had this happen with that album "Magazine" they went to court and lost, STYX wanted to in 1995 do a best of set and put LADY on there and the label they were first signed to said NO and they had to re record the song which worked for them because they were better players at that point.

at the very least, they should release some kind of Vanity ‘best of’ compilation. They could take the best moments from her two solo albums, add “Undress” and “Faraway Eyes” from the Action Jackson soundtrack,as well as “7th heaven” from the Last Dragon soundtrack. There is a rumor that she started a third solo album in the late 80s.Give us those tracks too! i saw her on a TV show in 1989 and she performed a very nice, jazzy song that is probably from those sessions.
