it's a good thing that some of the other bands (Apollonia 6,Mazarati,etc) aren't out there playing shows. The estate would probably come after them too.

Why do they have to come up with an agreement with Morris? They don't have to do squat.

Morris doesn't own the name 'The Time'.

Do you know that Morris filed for a copyright 2-3 weeks after P died, for something he didn't even own?

It's amazing that people can't quite seem to understand that Comerica and the court's function is to earn money for the estate to preserve and ensure his legacy. That business of filing for the trademark on 5/5/2016 says a lot to me and none of it is nice. MD knew what the deal was re the name and had known for many years. To say he is being disingenuous about this whole thing wouldn't be a lie. And it's not like he's been left hung out to dry, they just want him to pay for a license, no doubt like others are or will also be doing. I've always liked MD and saw his numerous posts on FB about Prince for a long time after Prince passed. This mess makes me see him differently now.

Yep, I don't know what the big uproar is about except Morris is pissed and thought he'd uproar the masses with 1/2 truths.

The Estate is doing exactly what they are supposed to do, and need to do.

It looks like the issue is in the combination with “the time”.

I wonder if it would be easier for Morris to just do shows billed as “Morris Day”.Yeah it would suck for the band members to perform uncredited, but the fans will understand and support them.As far as I know, the estate wouldn’t be able to do anything. He would be using his own name.

Morris is not an innocent babe in the woods here.

He knows the bidness. He snuck around and tried to trademark The Time days after Prince died.

I also think right before Prince died Morris came to him and wanted to record under the Time name and Prince said they could but they would have to pay him a percentage. THAT"S where the Original7 came from. They could tour under Morris Day and the Time but couldn't record. Now it was from my understanding that he had the option to buy the name from Prince and refused.

It’s a messy situation confused

I wish the estate would just leave Morris alone and allow him to use the name. After all, when Prince was alive,he had no problem with that arrangement. The estate should be focusing on other, better ways to generate income and keep Prince’s legacy alive.

The law is not a chess game. Morris signed a contract in 1982 that stated Prince owned all trademarks and images of "The Time". NOW, Morris is whining to the public beause he got caught ttying to steal.

A will would not distribute legal contracts.
A will would not keep people from fighting.
A will does not stop the estate taxes from being levied.

TRUSTS and new contracts would have done so.

Sorry, sympathizers, but you're letting Morris play on your emotions because he got caught (frankly) in thievery.

IT'S A COLD-BLOODED MOVE to attempt to steal the trademark that Prince owned, just TWO WEEKS AFTER PRINCE DIED. Morris doesn't mention that, does he? He got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Here's the trademark filing:
https://trademarks.justia.com/870/25/morris-day-and-the-87025467.html

NOTICE ALSO: This trademark is an attempt for ONLY Morris' own LLC to own the trademark. Does he "own" the entire band under that/those LLCs? If so, what's the difference between that and Prince owning what was signed in 1982?

NOTHING prevente Morris Day from forming a new band, performing new music along with the old and paying royalties that were due, hiring new and/or old associates and doing his own thing. DID HE? No! He's been a historical fossil for 40 years with that stale "somebody bring me a mirror" act.

I have no sympathies. THIS, on top of his co-authorized book where he complained he was only paid $50,000 for his part in Purple Rain. Yes, the man that had to be dragged out of a drug-addled haze, the man who ouldn't even show up and so Jerome had to do some of his parts. That man is complaining that he was actually paid more than standard for a low-budget film. Morris did not help fund the film (WB and Prince himself funded it). $50,000 in 1984 is worth over $135,000 today.

Sorry. I ramble sometimes.
I'm just PO'd about this.

LMAO. Prince jealous of morris for what? Acting as a character Prince originally created? lol The Time was prince. The character was prince. Vanity and Apollonia 6 was prince. All of them wouldn't be where they are now if it wasn't for prince.

I am not sure what the point is - if it is about money, what do they have to lose by having them make money billed as the band they have always been? It isn't like the ticket sales or new material would take away from any sort of thing from the Estate's pockets on The Time material Prince wrote, right?

Fucking ridiculous. How can the estate claim to be acting in Prince's best interests and then turn around and fuck Morris Day, a long time friend of Prince, over a name he's been using for decades. A name which Prince himself had no problems with.

It makes no sense.

Same here! And it's disgusting to see that so many of Prince's so-called fans are turning their backs on him given what MD has done re the trademark, not to mention only putting out half of what the real beef is. MD knew for decades that trademark wasn't his and would always be owned by Prince.
