Why doesn't Mavis Staples sing any songs by Prince in concert Around about 1994/5 Mavis stopped singing any songs written by prince in concert. does anyone have any idea why? 🍢 |

I wasn't aware of that since she seemed to have only praise for him, did she say that specifically in an interview? I was not sure but my impression was indeed that she didn't sing P material too much these days, but I just assumed she just didn't select P's songs because all things considered her 2 albums with him are not a very significant moment in her career. From her old Staple Singers glory to the very dynamic recording career she's had with the Anti- label for the last decade or so, she has a HUGE catalogue of songs at her disposal, and I would simply assume the 15 songs Prince gave her don't matter to her and her own fanbase the way they matter to us. I sort of thought it was the 2 albums she made with Prince weren't that important in her catalogue, but maybe she'd throw one song in nowadays as a tribute, and acknowledgement that although the albums they made together aren't that relevant he did introduce her to a different generation of fans. I last saw her in Sydney just before the world shut down, and someone in the crowd shouted out some reference to prince (it wasn't me btw, lol). That said she also didn't sing 'I'll take you there' which really surprised me. She was great in concert as usual, what a voice! 🍢 |

Why would she sing PRINCE songs she has never done that prior, she has done her own work with him but let's be real those are long forgotten and I doubt what her fans coming to a show want to hear, songs tha never went anywhere.
