I mean I have no issue with him overall, but the song isn't about him, Wally and the sunglasses are a deflection from what and who he is missing ie the Revolution / Susannah

We also have BILLY('s Sunglasses)

She was the only one in the whole world I could talk to.” * He’s using the hype of that song to sell his book. He may have some good stories about running around with Prince though. Depends on how much Prince trusted him.

Did he mention the really cheesy “Hard Life” short film they did in ‘87?? Or, any juicy details about antics while touring?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I havn't read it all yet, but have not seen hard life mentioned. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, you should read it yourself, there are lots of really cool and funny anecdotes
The full story of Eddie mugging him is funny as hell

Thanx Revolution81 for your posts. I think I will buy this one. I personally am intereated in what P's friends and associates have to say on their experiences with Prince. "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

I´ve always liked Wally Safford and what he brought to Prince´s camp. This Ebony article piqued my interest in that book. Link to article: https://www.ebony.com/new...ew-memoir/" target="_blank">https://www.ebony.com/new...ew-memoir/
"
excerpt from the Ebony article: . “He was at the peak of his career when I was with him. He dealt with incredibly trying times. He encountered a lot of stuff that people will never understand. He kept so much to himself right up to his death,” says Safford about the music legend, who died in 2016. Safford also sheds light on Prince’s deep connection to Detroit; many of his former bodyguards and trusted workers hailed from the Motor City. A few, the author included, had ties with the Nation of Islam. Some were even relatives of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad. “Prince had a deep admiration for Muhammad Ali, who was friends with my family,” reveals Safford. “Prince was always learning and open to knowledge. He was fascinated with my stories about my upbringing in the Nation of Islam and my sisters having personally known Ali and Malcolm X, who I knew as ‘Uncle Big Red.’ Prince also worked for a long time with my brother-in-law, tour promoter Billy Sparks, who is a Muslim and appeared in the movie Purple Rain.” . . I never knew that Wally had been in the music and security business for such a long time before he became a part of Prince´s camp. Or that him and Billy were related and had ties to Malcolm X.

I was initially a bit skeptical regarding the quality of this book (after reading or seeing other books by former associates) but I have always liked Wally´s presence in the Prince camp and his background story is interesting. How is the book´s style? And how many pages does it have? Has its cover changed now or is it still the same ? I read that they wanted to change it for the release. I ´ve always liked that Purple Rain era picture of Prince and Wally at an airport. Wally doesn´t look very big in that picture, especially walking next to Prince. He always looked much taller to me in the SOTT movie.

MAN but $40?? that's more than the top quality of the Prince Memoir, and Wally's book has only piece of a portion about Prince

40 dollars ? Wow. I gladly paid what I paid for the Prince memoir but 40 bucks for a book that is only partially about Prince? I guess I´ll need to read a couple more pages of this before I decide to order it. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I've seen his book at Walmart and on Amazon for less ~$31. Randee's book is also available for MUCH less, it's currently on Amazon for $61.99. Her book started out at $63.99 so it has dropped and will most likely continue to do so, as will Wally's book.

Never mind. I have not bought either one. I am not sure if I will get Wally's book, I'm hearing things that don't make it sound too great. If it was half that price I might consider it lol.

I heard an interview with him about the book and the host kept trying to not encourage it, but Wally kept pushing 'pimp' and the ladies and a certain way he perceived Prince. I don't actually care to hear that stuff, and I don't think Prince was a pimp. Nor is pimp a positive way to perceive him in my opinion. . It is a HUGE book, and quality photos for sure. Really good stuff. But not exciting like photos from the 70s or 80s for me for the price. The 21 Nights book was down to $10 within a month I think. I picked it up a Borders Books for $4 I think.

I think the guys of Wally and Prince’s generation use the term “pimp” as a way to say that a guy was a “player” who had lots of women at any given time, which would be accurate for Prince. I think I remember Chuck D using that term for him as well in one of the Prince documentaries when he was discussing how at first he didn’t understand what Prince was doing with his make-up and clothes (he’s insinuating he thought he was gay), but then he found out later that Prince was a “pimp”.

Sorry, if this is off-topic, but as a woman I have sometimes wondered if most/many men look up to or respect men who date/have sex with multiple women? I don't think it is a 'thing' for women to date multiple men?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Actually, this is the way dating went back in the 70's into the 80's, for women and men. No one was looking for a life-time hookup on a first date like people do now. Everybody knew what was what so there was no confusion. Since Prince was a teen in the 70's, I'm pretty sure he did the same as we all did, and that seemed to stay with him throughout his life....or at least it appeared that way. I don't think it is a 'thing' for women to date multiple men? Yes, its a badge of masculine virility to many even if they'd never admit it. Prince talked about all the girls his dad (who he greatly admired) had around him in interviews. It's an unspoken thing that goes way back. It's a thing for women having a bunch of men chasing after them while the woman constantly rejecting them, that's feminine desirability. You just woke up to the game? Never noticed these "special" magazine covers? [Edited 11/26/19 19:50pm] Time keeps on slipping into the future...
