Chapter 25 pages 171-175
As Morris called it 'The Come-to-Jesus Talk. Morris was in the studio with Prince working on songs, and had 6 songs that were ready to be recorded for a new Time album. They were also talking about the Time opening for P on the next tour.
THEN they had the 'talk' and Morris wasn't down with and he split, didn't hear from P for years, then Morris got an invite to P's Bel Air 'rental' home (2005).
Still don't know what the reasons were behind P canceling the Time.

Seems as though Prince was hitting everyone up with the “come to Jesus” (or probably more specifically - JW) in the late 90’s to early 2000’s - Questlove talked about it, and Morris Hayes said he left for several years because of the religious talk. Prince also cancelled the Roadhouse Garden project in 1999 because Wendy and Lisa’s sexuality no longer fit into his belief system. * Really a bummer to think about some of the great projects/collaborations that were missed because of Prince’s hardline stance during that time. |

Prince spoke to Morris about his faith... okay. But Prince obviously worked with musicians, singers, artists who weren't JWs right up to the end of his life. |

Some of the things the author of The Beautiful Ones put in the book was Prince whispering in the authors ear while watching Morris, and I get the feeling P wasn't too hip on their show. I believe this was the last time Morris seen Prince. |

My thought was that it was just Prince giving his new young friend tidbits of info while they were playing. Prince waited for Morris and hugged him and told him he loved him after that show, so I think he appreciated Morris and the guys being there at PP. |

I think I heard that after the Time's show, both Prince and Morris were sitting in his 'little kitchen' in one of the booths and Prince said, at some point, "I love you" to Morris.
I heard he was dancing during the show. |

He was clapping and said something like “you still got it” to Morris. They talked and then Prince hugged him and told him he loved him. |

That is what Morris said on Jimmy Jam's radio show. He said they talked about an hour.

If all this never happened we wouldn’t have gotten all the different genres of music we did and Prince wouldn’t have been able to mentor as many people as he did. |

To each his own with regard to interest in some of his choices. I myself would much rather have listened to the Roadhouse Garden release instead of RU2TJF or TRC. We actually would not have had to choose, as he could have released it with the others. He could also have worked with The Time. My point was that, because of his extreme religious stance, we lost some additional projects that no doubt would have been fantastic. |

The chronology, as Morris tells it, seems a bit off to me.
In Chapter 8 Morris says Prince called him to tell him "Get It Up" dropped and was a hit, therefore they needed to come up with a name for the band. When he says the song dropped and was a hit, that means it was released to radio stations and was getting a lot of air play/popular support. How could that have happened if *before* the band had a name? Did the DJs say, "Here's a song by... Well, I don't know." Did the 45 says "Unknown" where a band name would normally go?
He also says that he, Morris, recorded the lead vocals for the album, then they lined up Alexander O'Neal to be the lead singer, then Alexander got dropped because he demanded more money, and only then, as a backup plan, did they decided Morris would be he lead vocalist. Why would they have recorded Morris singing all the songs *before* they decided he'd be the lead singer?
Similarly, he says they came up with the name The Time before they hired Flyte Time, as though it was a massive coincidence that they independently came up with the name The Time and then just happened to hire a band called Flyte Time to play the role.

I can answer that! When I first heard "Get It Up" on the radio in 1981. They would NEVER say who it was. I knew IMMEDIATELY it was Prince(R.I.P.) or had something to do with him. Rumors started that it was his brother or cousin. Then when the song started getting major airplay weeks later they started saying it was The Time. Then my hook up place that had ALL the latest Prince & associate records got the 45 single.
So Morris actually cleared up to me in the book why. It was no name at first. That actually is brilliant promotion buzz. I personally believe Prince(r.i.p.) was leaning toward releasing it as his single. "That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream." |

not exactly true, By 1986 the Purple camp had delved into all musical genre... he never needed to touch on gansta rap. And I know people have differing views of spiritual living etc, but he was a man/human. He made mistakes like all of us. It happened as it happened, not as it was to happen.
.
When mortality hit him, he was shaken, and things and people that meant more to him he began reaching out to them in a different way. |

The term "Gangsta Rsp" gets thrown around too easily ... Prince NEVER performed "gangsta rap"..."gangsta rap" is a genre that chronicles and depicts gang and criminal activity (often their own)...Prince didnt do that...just because someone says bitch or shit or nigga or fuck in their lyrics, doesnt make it "gangsta rap" |

I was so glad to hear that privately Prince had told Morris that he liked Oak Tree and was happy for him even though he teased the track in concert. And of course that they eventually had one last time to talk before Prince died. |

Prince could not stop himself from digs toward those who left his camp - Morris, Jimmy and Terry, Paul P, etc. He was just too competitive. Jimmy said he found a smashed up Control CD on his driveway right after it was released and he knew it was Prince who had done it. His 3-part interview with Questlove was great. He also detailed the genesis of The Time and how Morris got the lead spot over Alexander O’Neal. Such a funny story! No doubt how Prince came up with the “Alexander Nevermind” moniker |

Is there anything to back up the claim that Get It Up was originally released to radio blind without a band name? Prince Vault nor Wikipedia state that bit of information. Which is a big deal for a band a song that became a major track in purple history. |

I agree, and Prince later told those who joined him to be prepared that it wouldn't last forever. He was constantly changing things up, even his clothing designs and color schemes, never mind song arrangements. I found it funny when Paul Peterson said he wanted Prince to reconsitute the Family and be involved, and Prince said sure... if you become vegetarian; in other words... no. |
