I read once where a Prince follower wrote that Prince and someone from before he was famous always had a special respect and connection. And that even though it didn’t work because he went with other girls, “the love was always there”. I’ve always wondered (if that was true), if that was Susan M.

IT WAS said that she left him because he was infatuated with Vanity. It was also said that Susan was going to put up with Prince's messing around ...so she just left him,

She is still beautiful. I am glad she and P still stayed friends over the years too. Romance may have not worked out because of his need to be with other women, but caring for each other never went away. Interested to see what stuff she will post that is Prince related. It wasn’t uncommon to stay in the same circles with an ex. There may be lingering feelings of different kinds for a while, but people cared about each other in the end. Friendships lasted a lifetime. Prince was actually very fortunate to have all these people around him even when they were no longer physically there later in life, and he being the loving soul he was (yes, even under hos foibles) cared greatly for those in his past. I respect how she has stayed in the background and not promoted herself since Prince's death.

Apparently he was very attached to her and upset that she decided to have a more platonic relationship with him as she did not feel comfortable being in the harem. I guess we all know When Doves Cry is about their relationship. [Edited 8/14/19 23:01pm]

Darling Nikki is about Nikki Sixx. Or something like that.

when doves cry is about his relationship with susan moonsie-maybe he was upset with her withdrawing sexually. It was brought up in DMSR and several othere biographies. He wrote it after songs for Purple Rain were complete. [Edited 8/15/19 20:40pm]

Let’s keep this in perspective people. Susan and Prince were very young. Straight out of high school. Damn near puppy love. It’s funny to hear you talk about an 18 year old girl “withdrawing sexually” from her 22 year old boyfriend. Come on people.

It is documented that she remained friends with Prince but did not continue with him romantically in the mid-80's. She did not agree with him seeing so many women simultaneously. A lot of women left him for that reason....and he freaked out about each one and wrote "sad" songs for each, ie., When Doves Cry was for Susan M, Empty Room for Susannah, probably most of Purple Rain for Vanity.... He was 26 at the time, not 22. [Edited 8/16/19 16:12pm]

Did Prince himself say that When Doves Cry was about Susan Moonsie? Vanity was to be his co-star in Purple Rain and left him, she was also pretty stunning, he put her on his iconic Rolling Stone cover instead of his bandmates. Jill Jones said Prince kept in touch with high school girlfriend Kim Upsher throughout his life; for all we know 'Forever in My Life' could be about her. https://www.huffpost.com/...uewn4lSwez
"...his girlfriend who has been with him, lived in the same house as him, grew up with him, that was his big crush from school...Kim was an unsung hero in my opinion. They stayed friends throughout." - Jill
Prince warned against people claiming they know who his songs were about...

Yes, it has been widely discussed for years that WDC is written about Susan. I read somewhere that he did stay in touch with Kim Upsher over the years and also paid for her funeral when she passed away in November 2015. I know P has a reputation as being a womanizer and not always being faithful but it seems if he really liked them and cared for them even after a relationship ended, he stayed in touch with some of them over the years. I think Forever in My Life is written about Susannah Melvoin, he reportedly confirmed it in an AOL Q&A several years ago. If not, maybe hexwas kind of the glue back home that everyone knew was always there.

Another thing Jill says in that article: “When you got an album completed, you were done as a romantic interest. Like, you were still there but he was putting you in a place where you weren’t going to just be a happy power couple. You were given your wings to go do your thing. His ability to let go of your how fast or slow, that’s because he was juggling, like we say, the inspiration for all these women.” From what I have seen there are things that didn’t change. I think this is what happened with Andy Allo. He was getting older and she was the last muse he was involved with in that way, and because it gets harder as you get older, he might’ve let go of her more slowly. But I do think he also sent her out there after their music was done. He put out what she inspired cuz that’s what he always did.

Sheryl Crow was interviewed by Dan Rather on AXS televsion several years ago and sometime into the interview Michael Jackson was brought up as she toured with him many years ago. She mentioned his transcendent talent and this segued into a discussion about the 'late Prince' whom she said was on Michael's level, just unbelievably talented. She stated she collaborated with with Prince for a short time,(I think they worked on "Winding Road, Baby Noz etc), she said that he shined 'a light so bright' on her that it was intoxicating. I am paraphrasing here but she said that she was not prepared for him to abruptly move on to another project without warning. He was not angry with her, he just turned off the light towards her when he was finished and started something else. She said it felt psychologically unsafe. They did not seem to be romantically involved. She recounted this situation very objectively, but that stayed wth me. It must have quite difficult for his various muses when their 'time was up'. Sheryl Crow only experienced it over a short period of time but it felt unsafe and she is established. Interesting...

Peggy you have a wealth of knowledge. That is interesting. Regardless of what happened with him and Mayte I can see why it was so hard for her to move on. With Manuela, she wasn’t a muse. So... Mayte was in a way. I read recently someone who was around back then (I forget who it was) say that Prince and Mayte watched each other so intensely while she danced for him one day that it was uncomfortable being in what felt like their private space. Anyway, the shining a bright light thing is amazing. Mayte for instance again, said she was put on a very high pedestal and spoiled by him. For a time, as we know.

I was kinda using the word muse loosely...I think most/many of his relationships had that quality.
