On Time A Life in Funk by Morris Day With David Ritz https://www.dacapopress.c...306922206/
A memoir by Morris Day of The Time centering around his lifelong relationship and association with Prince.
To tell the story of Morris Day is to tell the story of Prince. Not because they were inseparable or because their paths never diverged, but because, even when their paths did diverge, they always intersected again. Each artist lifted the other up, pushing one another to be something bigger and better than they thought themselves capable of. There was plenty of one-upmanship and some (un)healthy competition, but the respect Day and Prince had for one another never wavered, from the time they met in junior high until His Royal Badness’s untimely death in 2016.
In telling his own story and writing about Prince, Day turns Prince into the narrative’s Greek chorus. Prince is there to protect his legacy, argue with Morris’s interpretation of events, and continue the dialogue that started when both musicians were in their early teens. Because of their lifelong friendship emotional intimacy, the founder and still current leader of The Time is the one man who can pull this off, and in so doing shed a new light on Prince and the culture from which the Minneapolis funk scene was born.
On Time recounts Day’s fight to overcome cocaine addiction, his search for meaning in both music and romance, and his subsequent second-act success by once again leading The Time, whose music is his lifeblood and soul. Day’s book is a comprehensive, free-wheeling extension of his music–the ride is wild and the funk unfiltered.

Anxious to read it, but that cover is below amateurish. It's cheap. At least 4 fonts, 3 colors, 2 titles, and 1 off-centered photo. For someone who is normally C-O-O-L, that cover is a hot mess. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Can't wait for this release! I am sure Morris Day book will be more entertaining compared to the other books that I have already purchased since 2016! Still waiting on the Prince unfinished biography that he was writing - that is the most anticipated one that I am looking forward to!

Maybe at long last we'll solve the "how was Corporate World connected to GB before it became Pandemonium?" and "Who was supposed to be in The Time in 1989 before the original members came back onboard?" mysteries? . Those are mysteries because all members tell different stories all the time. If you read and watch interviews from back then, they contradict themselves all the time. © Bart Van Hemelen

I am also looking forward to reading this but wish some of these associates and their writers would give these books more care - and honesty. The description is a little extreme and obviously trying to "sell"... And that's not necessary. Just be humble, honest, decent and straight-forward about the association. No need to sell us on anything. We already KNOW the nature of the friendship. IOW, don't insult our intelligence or think about trying to make things appear a certain way to GO DOWN IN HISTORY. And make sure everything's grammatically correct!

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Jimmy Jam said the Time was working at doing a movie about 'the Time' and then Prince had to encorporate them into GB.
Maybe it was always going to be the O7?

I look forward to reading this. But I agree with the previous opinions on the cover art. . Maybe he was trying for the Ice Cream Castle album aesthetic .

I know, and it remains true for more recent interviews. Though I don't think they ever addressed the second point anyway. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

CW was definitely Morris and Jerome only, and I wonder what was planned for promo, surely they needed a mock-up band, or it would have been promoted as Morris' third solo album. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

You can't finish something that was barely started when the person writing the AUTObiography passes away. Unless there are diaries, journals, and/or hours and hours of taped recordings from the deceased person for a ghostwriter to work with. Interesting. Funny, I don't think Jerome ever appeared on a single album vocally previously.

Based on how it looks, I understand your concern but to see that Dave Ritz is the actual author gives me hope and makes me care less about the cover....which looks as if it´s been inspired by the Ice Cream Castles album cover artwork. A princely life in funk is the real turn-off on the cover for me. I know it´s probably not his intention and maybe it´s smart from a business point of view but that just sounds like they are trying to milk the Prince connection and I´m suprised to see Dave´s name under such a corny sounding title. I own Dave Ritz´s fantastic Marvin Gay biography "Divided Soul" and think he´s a good music journalist. His articles are often very enjoyable. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I kind of like that the cover is shit and cheap looking. Now, I'm probably reading too much into it, in fact, I KNOW I'm reading too much into it, but it's kind of like a call back to his character in Purple Rain. Like, Morris in Purple Rain was one of those people who liked to pretend to be a big shot. He had the fancy clothes and told waitresses to keep the change but he also asked his friend to get the change back for him and he lived in a shitty little apartment. He was full of bluster and bullshit. His whole thing was trying to fool people into thinking he was rich and successful by wearing garish outfits and talking himself up at every opportunity. This book cover is exactly the kind of cover a man like that would come up with. The different colours and fonts of the lettering, the horrible picture that he probably thinks looks cool. It all adds up to a man who is trying desperately to come off as cool, rich and successful and is failing miserably. Just like the Morris Day character in Purple Rain.
