* 1. First bolded comment - WRONG. He stated they USED to love each other deeply. * 2. Yep, I'm sure that was also connected to Vanity as she had left, and the others I mentioned as well, however, NOT the rest of the song where he is screaming at the top of his lungs asking the girl to choose him over the other guy. * 3. Yep, he would say "she knows about this one", because I'm sure she did know that some of the song was inspired by her. You think he's going to tell her that part of the song was also about his strong desire for the woman who turned out to be one of his greatest loves? Nah, don't think so. * 4. Prince had a "type" which he would be drawn to - dark hair, dark eyes, light brown skin. However, he also was smitten with many other types too - Susan Moonsie - darker skinned dark eyes, Kim Basinger - blonde/blue eyes, Carmen E - all american with light eyes, Anna Garcia - a mix but a very American look, Nona Gaye - lighter skinned African American with dark eyes, Jill Jones - mixed race but very light skinned, Mayte Garcia - Spanish with very light skin, dark eyes and dark hair, and Susannah Melvoin - white with dark eyes and dark brown curly hair. So, his "type" was all over the place. I think if any part of the song speaks to his relationship with Denise it would the “rest of TBO where he is screaming...” (your #2^^). His screaming aligns perfectly with the Volatile nature of his relationship with Denise. When he says “we use to fight” That bit in the song is a glimpse of that. That part has to be be about Denise IMO

I have to disagree on that one. It has been stated that Susannah was in a serious relationship with another guy when she met Prince, and she was not available to him. Even Prince, in that infamous Ebony interview which everyone hangs on to, stated those lyrics were connected only to the film scene. Again, he didn't want anyone, other than himself, stating publicly who a song was written about or discussing his personal relationhips. * The lyrics to those verses - first where he's gently asking her "what's it gonna be?" Then, where he's screaming are these: *
Baby, baby, baby
What's it gonna be Baby, baby, baby Is it him or is it me? Don't make me waste my time Don't make me lose my mind baby Baby, baby, baby
Can't you stay with me tonight Oh baby, baby, baby Don't my kisses please you right You were so hard to find The beautiful ones, they hurt you every time *
Do you want him?
Or do you want me? Cause I want you Said I want you Tell me, babe Do you want me? I gotta know, I gotta know Do you want me? Baby, baby, baby Listen to me I may not know where I'm going (babe) I said I may not know what I need One thing, one thing's for certain baby I know what I want, yeah And if it please you baby Please you, baby I'm begging down on my knees I want you Yes I do Baby, baby, baby, baby I want you Yes I do

Which songs were written for Shelia E that he sang? In her book she says he sent flowers to her for a long time too. Interesting that he ask her verbally “will u marry me” But no ring. Doesn’t speak the words ever to Susannah but gives her the ring. Which would y’all prefer? Since his actions never matched to loyalty to either one, my vote is the Verbal proposal. Well he did keep her around forever too so there is that. I think she was his true love a “work wife” match made in purple heaven. I think that relationship was his most married. How did they make that last so long???

Regardless of any similar features they have it is ridiculous to state that he married Manuela because she resembled Vanity. That is just absurd. If he just wanted someone who physicall resembled her he would have been looking for, and dating those women all along. As I posted above, he had many women of varying looks, races, features, etc. * Again, this is just the "Vanity and Prince" obsessed crew reaching for another storyline to add to the "Prince never got over Vanity" tale.

Nope!!!! Who was he trying to pull her from?? How was he "wasting his time" trying to get her?? She had been there for 11/2 years, and he knew she loved him. Those lyrics do not apply to their situation at that time.

He was sending flowers to Sheila during the time she was on tour with Lionel Ritchie. He was asking her to stop being a drummer and join his camp to make a solo record. She talked about this during her interview with Questlove. * Bolded text above - not correct. He DID speak the words to Susannah during the week that they spent together in Paris - immediately following her trip to NY to meet him where he presented her with the ring. Per Susannah, he woke her up just before sunrise and took her out to the balcony. He said, "I don't want you to be the lead in the film. I want you to be my wife." * Sorry, regardless of whether or not they got married, there was clearly concerted effort and planning on his part for the proposal to Susannah.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Seriously??? The "emotion" in those lyrics is total frustration, because he cannot have the girl he wants as she is with another man. It is not sadness or regret from losing a lover. If you want that listen to Empty Room, Come Home or Wally * Also, have you listened to him performing Forever In My Life live in 1987?? Talk about emotional...

I don’t count “ I don’t want you to be in the movie I want you to be my wife” The same as “ will you marry me” The other sounds like a consolation prize he knew he wasn’t gonna every give. They both knew that letting her plan and decorate a house was gonna make her feel married. And she even speaks to that effect on Toure.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He DID NOT have to do anything for her as a "consolation" for not being in the film. That is another ridiculous statement. And if that really was the case then I would say he went through a heck of a lot to keep from losing her. And no, she did not say "they both knew that planning the house would make her feel married". She said her version of settling down with him was to plan their house together. * So, you think mouthing "marry me" on stage in the middle of performing an intense song is the same as actually asking someone to marry you? It was not just the two of them privately talking to each other on a hotel balcony in Paris where they were spending the week together. It was on stage in the middle of a song with thousands of people screaming, and then moving on to the next song.

I feel that behind closed doors Prince might have felt that
Most of his women had “ no home training” when he says that Line in UTCM my heart sank.( for the character) Cause when a black man knows that phrase And uses it, it means something profound in the community. [Edited 2/18/19 15:56pm]

I can't remember -does he say that about Mary Sharon or someone else? Because the synopsis of the story is a poor African American gigolo who traveled to an exclusive high class area of France in order to seduce wealthy women for money.

I think that was just the "sparring" dialogue or setting up the character portrayals, because the dynamic of Christopher and Mary was her looking down on him for what he was doing, and him initially only wanting her for her money, but then falling in love with her.

Listen to her interview with Questlove on his Supreme show podcast on Pandora. I'm pretty sure she talks about Prince trying to persuade her to go to MN and join his camp to do a solo record. She said she would get flowers while on tour drumming. She said it took convincing, because she didn't think she wanted to be a singer/performer that way. She wanted to continue with being a drummer. * I will go back and listen to it again.

Again, the screams are connected to the lyrics of him begging the girl to choose him over another guy. Prince was not singing the song live during the filming, as we all know - he was lip syncing to the original recording. So, Alex Hahn's statements make no sense and are pointless - as I've heard much of the book is as well.

At 1:37 Sheila began talking about her time with Ptince and stated that Prince started sending her flowers asking her to join his camp and to do a solo record. She said he came to a couple of her shows on Lionel Ritchie's '83 tour and persuaded her to do a solo record. She said the tour ended by early '84. She went into the studio with Prince and they recorded the Glamorous Life album in one week. This makes sense, because Prince had many of those songs written.

It was a pleasure listening to her entire history with music and drums. She's played with everyone. Her Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, and Michael Jackson stories are really good. Questlove's back and forth with her is adorable and it's clear how much he admires her. I loved when he was trying to get the technical info on the Linn Drum patches and claps. Really sweet

His book has been highly criticized and is riddled with mistakes from what I have read. Prince's statement was that those lyrics were for that scene in the film, however, based on what we now know about what was happening at that time, and what all of his associates have said, plus what was recently discussed with Questlove, Duane, and Ruth, and most imprtantly - what Prince said at his first P&M show at PP - I have no doubt that Susannah inspired that part of the song.
