Very respectful (and sweet) interview. But I don't think the interviewer was right that Prince never gave consent for remakes of his songs other than Jill. Chaka Khan and Alicia Keyes were allowed with his consent, were they not? I know Alicia asked first.

You don't know that because it is incorrect.
He didn't have to give permission for anyone to cover a song. Look up Compulsory License. Do you realize how many Prince covers songs there are out there??? do you think he gave permission to every single one?!
Alicia did not ask permission. In fact, he probably would have blocked Ginuwine from covering "When doves cry" given the lyric changes that he made & Pince hated. But... Compulsory License.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

I got the impression from that interview that she recorded it but then realized that Prince probably wouldn't be happy if he wasn't consulted or asked first.. She then talked to him before it was released. The interview is where I got my info from but maybe I interpreted it incorrectly.

I've heard it both ways, the first of which was her just doing the song. She may very well have asked. The point is that she didn't have to but if she did, cool.

i wonder if all the people who covered him in the mid 80's asked, cyndi lauper, the pointer sisters, latoya jackson. oddly, prince never mentioned getting ripped off in those years by songs that were plagiarizing his, i always thought that was interesting. He probably could have sued a few folks in those years if he wanted. |

. I assume Prince gave his consent to Mavis Staples covering 'Positivity', to Mayte covering 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World', to Maceo Parker covering 'Baby Knows' and 'The Greatest Romance Ever Sold', to Andy Allo covering 'We Can Funk' etc... |

Ginuwine said that Prince liked his cover... Personally I don't like his cover though...

I have seen video of Alicia performing the song with Prince at his concert, so I think that would show that he was okay with her covering the song. He spoke highly of her in interviews as well.

From Google Search on Compulsory Law:
"A compulsory license lets a musician record (and sell) a rendition of a previously recorded song by paying royalties to the original composition artist who is the legal copyright holder of the work. ... But, by following the compulsory law, you can legally release a recording of Prince's music or anyone else's."
*
I imagine this is one of the big reasons that Prince wanted ownership of his music back from WB, in addition to just generally wanting to own the music that he wrote and recorded. Kevin Smith stated that Prince talked to him about this during his visit to PP in the 2000-2001 time period. He said Prince told him that Chaka Khan was upset about Whitney Houston covering her song without first contacting her about it. The record company allowed Whitney to use the song. Same with Sinead and NC2U.

Yes, the "chaka mad" comedy schtick done by Kevin at Prince's expense However, it was quite an interesting account of life at PP with Prince and his state of mind during that time.... |
