If Anna really co-wrote this, I find it pretty incredible that Prince would not only remove her share of royalties from the copyright notice but, adding insult to injury, give it to Carmen instead! . This seems to confirm that Carmen never wrote a line of lyrics on her album and only received royalties as a "gift" from Prince. . It's really super cool of Anna to share this. Is it known why that particular project with Anna went nowhere? It would have been much cooler than Carmen's solo thing: Anna and her friends had a real Vanity 6 vibe A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

This sounds like a song he would have written for Vanity 6/App 6 which had very sexy image. Anna had a wholesome image and her writing lyrics like this at age 17/18? Did they write the lyrics together? Also, if she did write them on her own and he didn’t give her any writing credit, that’s cold.

The only good thing about this song is P's voice at the beginning and at the end. Sweetness.

To me he sounded kinda cold, demanding and nonchalant to her. Even when she said "I love U" he quickly responded and hung up just as fast. It's funny how near everyone hates that song. . Regardless of who sings it, it clearly doesn't work for 2 reasons: . One is that Prince usually wasn't convincing when he tried to emulate this europop techno sound (something he tried on different occasions from 1989 to 1999): there wasn't much he wasn't good at when it comes to emulating a genre, but he wasn't good at that. . The other, maybe most important one is that the verses' melody plays against everything the song stands for. That melody manages to evoke both a nursery rhyme and a miltary chant at the same time, in either case something very mechanical, forced, totally artificial and somewhat agressive that totally goes against the message of sensuality the lyrics and the chorus' melody are trying to convey. That's actually weird because if there's something P knew how to do it was being sensual and composing sensual melodies, but in that case it falls completely flat (edit: I saw later on the YT liner notes that the melody is apparently Anna's, who was 16 or 17 at the time she composed it, so I think it's safe to say what I say without being disrespectful). No matter who sings it, a man can't possibly want to go to bed with a woman singing those verses . Nevertheless, as every Prince composition, there are cool little ideas here and there, and I must say that I find Anna's version vastly cooler than Carmen's. There's not that different though, but Anna manages to give at least some sensuality to those impossible verses, maybe just because she obviously doesn't take it as seriously as Carmen did (or was instructed to by Prince, I don't wanna blame Carmen for her record's artistic direction because it clearly was under P's control), and it works better with a dose of second degree. And the instrumentation is a little more in the vein of that really interesting, experimental industrial funk sound P had in 89, while the Carmen version was somewhat polished to be more in tune to the sound of the early 90's. . So, well, it's not something I'll listen to every day but it's a really pleasant discovery, and I truly look forward to hearing the other songs Anna wishes to share from that project, to see what kind of shape it was taking. I really wish I knew why it was shelved. . The phone calls are, of course, the loveliest thing and a real, moving homage. I'm really grateful Anna chose to include them and that Militant and Jill supported that decision. They truly honor Prince's memory . If I remember correctly he was bored with it. Or she was. . Even though I would have 'enjoyed' having these 'proteges in the making' during 1989-1990, I think Prince didn't see something that he saw in ...Vanity 6, the Time etc . chapter 11 FANTASTIC (Possessed)

ONLY to give orders that he expected done PRONTO! When she hinted she may have something to do. He sarcastically ask "U gotta be somewhere important"? then told her to HURRY UP! I didn't get a cold vibe. I think he sounded business-like, almost parental. Both calls were quick, but hey, the man was one of the biggest stars in the world, not to mention a mogul, managing a stable of musical acts. Finally, at least he said, "I luv u, too." Not everyone always responds that way, especially "international lovers," like Prince.

He DEFINITELY sounded business-like & parental. But not like a man in love. That "I love U,too" was dry and quick. But he was a man with MANY irons in the fire. So I guess he had many more calls to make.
But U right he was a mogul and had a lot on his plate. "That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

The more I listen to it, the more I love it. . Anna manages to put so much more life into singing it than Carmen, it's pretty incredible to compare the 2! . And better even, the instrumental track itself is awesome! IDK what happened when P reworked it in 91, though I suspect Junior Vasquez is responsible for slaughtering it when he "finished" it, but so much has been lost This version is full of wonderful little samples and soundz, it's so cooool . And that video is absolutely lovely. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Anna played us "Anna Waiting" when we visited her at her house late last year, right after we did this interview with her.
There's extra Prince harmony vocals on the chorus, too.
Second verse, for example starts with "All is well in Lonely Town..." That's cool. I have always liked Anna.
