Well, Larry Graham & Bass 2gether are close to masterclass... as long as he dont use his deep preachin' vox, so i just hope he dosnt do back voclas.

That's why I've put him in there - muthrfuqr can't help himself! thank u 4 a funky time

I think that Prince used Kirk when he didn't want drums to dominate his music. Michael B and John Blackwell tended to have a big impact on his music whenever they were playing with him live or on record. When Kirk was the drummer, other aspects of the music shined. In other words, I think Prince selected his musicians carefully depending on where he wanted the focus.

I can't agree with that. I think Prince made a bad - and lazy - decision and put Kirk on drums for personal rather than musical reasons. You listen to things like New Power Soul and Rave, and the drums are (like always) a HUGE part of the record.
Besides, if he wanted a drummer with less of a distinct personality, that didn't mean he had to go with one who was technically weak. Cora's playing, for example, had all the personality of a fire extinguisher, but she was tight as a fat man's shoe. thank u 4 a funky time

Yea. I'm probably rationalizing. Prince definitely deserved better, but Prince is loyal. How many songs/albums/videos did Tony M ruin?

What is wrong sound too much like a man?

Not an ideal lineup Some say Kirk had improved though. He played for Candy Dulfer for a bit and the clips I saw sounded okay though he didn't have much speed. He's certainly not fancy.I love Larry's playing so he could stay.Agree about AA but she would never put herself in that position again.I wondered what Prince was thinking having her play lead guitar after playing electric for only two weeks. Not familiar with Phillip C-was that the guy in Grafitti Bridge? And I agree about Tony M.

I don't see how not having LG as bassist fits into this.

I think his one line in the movie was "Bang!"

Kirk has definitely improved. To put Larry Graham in there is ridiculous. And the worst keys player Prince ever had was Renato. He's one noodly motherfucker.

Renato?? He obviously had technical skill. If Prince let him play too long that was prince's choice. I didn't mind Renato.
As for lineup from hell. none of them. Really, it was how Prince chose to use them that mattered. If he was going to let Graham be corny and preachy, then that was on Prince. LG is a talented bass player and using his ability wouldn't have hurt anything. KJ (prick that he might be) could stay in the pocket so as long as flashy drumming wasn't what was needed, then it doesn't matter. MOtherless child has both KJ and LG in it and I think the music was brilliant. Tony M might be the only one I could say that about but even he knew how to play guitar a little and wasn't too bad of a dancer.

The only bad person in his lineup was Tony M. And that wasn’t his fault. Why Prince ever felt he needed to compete with rap and hip hop is beyond me. Paisley Park is in your heart

Larry Graham's one of the greatest bass-players out there and brilliant live. DVS would definitely be in a line-up from hell, if anybody still remembers him? TC Ellis might get my vote also. Though I liked Hannah as a drummer, I found her vocals very grating; probably more so than any other vocalist Prince used. I'd also suggest Shelby J. Though she is a great vocalist from 2009/10 onwards her increased presence and shout outs on stage made her one of the most distracting band members of Prince's career. When I saw her live with Prince in 2007 though, she blended way better and wasn't as intrusive. Kirk's drumming in Prince's final live band with MonoNeon was tight. The live shows and rehearsal tracks are superb.

It's nice to read all your extremely insightful, extremely intelligent, extremely enlightened expertise on those musicians' technical skills. It's a real pity the music industry doesn't hire musicology experts on the org to make the most important decisions, the global state of music would be dramatically improved. I can't recall but I became a fan in 2002 so I probably missed them.

I can't believe someone would include Larry Graham in such a lineup and not include any of the 3rdeyegirls.

Well "genius" might be pushing it a bit but that's my point. He's a great bass player. If you're compiling a list of worst Prince bandmembers then he should be nowhere near it.

Larry Graham changed the face of bass playing, and in his day he was an absolute phenomenon. But now? Did anyone else see GCS at Hop Farm? Woefully lazy and self-indulgent.
I'm not saying he's a bad bass player by any means! I just don't like the guy.
Shelby J - yes! Yet another in a long line of very good singers you can find in every other corporate function band. *yawn* thank u 4 a funky time

I liked his playing at the NSJ Festival in 2011.Shelby's chanting was annoying at times but I liked her vocals for the most part.Prince seemed to love her and I think they had nice onstage chemistry.I didn't particularly dislike any of Prince's band members really.Andy's really the only one I can think of who wasn't adept at her instrument and she improved as she went along.Of course it would have been better if he had hired a skilled rhythm guitarist and had her sing backup and play the acoustic but he put her in that position for some reason.Maybe he saw it as a challenge.

Technical skill doesn't make one a good musician. Taste and knowing when not to noodle more than a Chinese takeaway does.
