Sheila E. shares her cover of America in a new interview with Rolling Stone

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/premieres/sheila-e-on-princes-wooing-wild-purple-rain-parties-w486152

Really great 7:42 cover and an interesting interview.

When I was filming the video, I was getting angry thinking about how we're at this place again. When we recorded [the new version] in the studio a couple weeks ago, as I was taking my timbale solo, I just broke down crying, because I'm playing this song that [Prince and I] used to play together. I think it was written in '85, '86. And with him now not being here โ€“ it really messed me up. Filming and singing it was hard. Then to think, 'wow. okay I'm gonna release this on his birthday.' Again, it's very emotional for me, but I think he would do this at this time if he was here.

Diggin' the cover of America, looking forward to the album.

Interesting how her memory of Scarlet Pussy doesn't quite line up with PrinceVault...

Uh, that ain't Prince. Not in the slightest. It's obviously someone from her band. But the voice is not his, nor the phrasing, etc. from the original.

Prince's vocals are double-tracked on the original, plus possibly Wendy, Lisa, or Mark singing along. It makes sense that she'd mimic the same thing on her version. It's almost like a call to attention with multiple people saying the same thing. It's an aggressive approach to the song.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The interview is great!

.

Some interesting insight.

.

I've always thought Prince songs are extremely hard to cover. This is certainly proof of that but without doubt I'm interested to hear the album.

.

Ultimately I don't think doing a Prince covers album is the right thing to do.

I ain't feeling it. Sheila is really milking her shit w/ Prince. She shouldn't dare give side eye to anyone who was close to him doing the same thing (like Mayte writing a book, or Kirk giving an interview, etc., just as general examples). She sees the money, and while I never thought she'd be one to do this sorta shit, she's panning out to be rather typical. How many pieces of the purple pie does she want???

Hell, I'm surprised she ain't changed her fucking name to the symbol with the butterfly.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

No, that's her multitracking her voice with low and high parts. But it is very faithful to the original live version. To the point of being redundant.. and the little bits added don't add much. Never liked Free (and I disagree with the idea that America is the land of the free, but that's a whole different thang..) and the little piano bit at the end doesn't do much either for me. (and Candy is no Eric Leeds)

.

However, nice to hear. No idea why she made a video too..

falloff

I am absolutely, 100% sure this is a reaction to The Revolution playing this in their shows. How dare they play a song they actually played with Prince! mad rolleyes

OK, the Free exceerpt totally ruined it.
And judging by the waveforms, it's a little loopy.
But I dig the gesture.

She's an artist and she's got bills to pay.

Interesting, about her meeting candy for the first time.
Is was not in 87 during sing o the times. NOt in amsterdam either as the sott tour took place in utrecht and rotterdam.

Candy was supposed to be supprting in 1988, in rotterdam during the lovesexy tour.

I dont know what to really think about Sheila since his passing. Her dissing of others and strange actions and now this article interview reeks of look at me, I was there for everything! You were??? really?

This along with the cruise, boy song all seem like she is just all about the $$$ not heart

I made it about a minute through the video before I had to turn it off... it's very 'unique' to say the least, but not really in a good way lol

The cover itself, though? Pretty damn good. I'm about halfway through listening to the audio and it's well done.

Edit: oh shit, this is very similar to the live version from 85, I've always wanted a studio quality version of that performance

I'd still love to know what happened between Prince and Sheila towards the end. Also interesting that she has chosen not to participate in any of the estate events, either the tribute concert or celebration this past April. There's bad blood there for some reason.

Aww. Come on. That's the curse of the associated artists.
I'm sure they tried a more personal path.
But if sales say otherwise, watcha gonna do?
Starve to death? I'll take any chance to make Prince's music known to people.
"America" was not a big single, and in Trump's America, is now more relevant than ever.

She was interviewed a while back in a financial magazine where she talked about her financial situation.

.

.

When asked (she was NOT bragging), she said yes, The Glam Life made her a millionaire (though she put a lot of it back into her next tour).....

.

.

she also talked about how she had good financial advisers who put her in tech during the doc com boom and got her out before it crashed.

I'm guessing she means the shows at Feyenoord Stadion 88. If it was 87, then I guess it had to be Utrecht, as she said it was an outdoor gig.

I don't know what to think of Sheila E. However, I must say she gets criticism that for some reason the Revolution doesn't. I am not sure I understand the double standard.

She does seem to have a healthy ego and doesn't waste time expressing that she is nearly Prince's equal. "I made him laugh. I was famous before he was etc". But she spends very little time dissing on his flaws and the antecdotes she did say after he died had mostly already been covered before he died.

IF she was so bad why did Prince keep working with her? He wasn't trying to get her into the sack, he didn't need her to get attention, she is a very good drummer but there are better ones (she is more of a percussionist than a drummer anyhow and sometimes she wasn't even used as a percussionist). Was he naive about her? Or was it that she was so confident in herself that he trusted her not to use him or to need to live on his coattails?

As for exploiting his music, she gives him full credit for America and uses the song to make a political statement. I am not sure how that is disrespectful to him.

Independently wealthy. While she had a job before Prince saw her, how did she get a name in the public? It wasn't playing congas for Santana. It wasn't from playing drums with George Benson. It was Prince who gave her a name and a public awareness & public career (despite her protesting that she never wanted that - she sure cashed them paychecks). So while she makes her own money, she's also making cash playing Prince songs in concerts, either from her albums or his. That's fine and all - they were her albums, and projects for her. But let's not pretend she made more bucks away from Prince.

Let's not pretend she graciously bowed out of the business at hand to let someone else handle it. She has no choice but to stay out of the estate stuff. It's not about being respectful, it's about it ain't her bid'ness. The Trust, the lawyers, or whoever isn't going to let her or anyone else get up in business that isn't hers to worry about anyway.

I respect Sheila, but she's riding Prince's jock harder than if it were 1986 up in his muthafukka.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
