I wonder why Prince never released his father's work, as a tribute?

I've wondered that as well. I think in his early days, Prince felt in strong competition with his dad (even though he'd clearly won) but I think if he had lived longer he would have done something like this. I'm more excited about John Nelson's work than anyone else in that family, no offense to them.

This is incredible! What an amazing thing to come out of Paisley. Can we figure that this was recorded before Tyka's single? Seems so. I am glad the studios are being used and are not just sitting there to ruin. I am just overjoyed that this music was found and recorded - I cant wait to listen. Also, the enginner at the end of the video is HOT!!

MUSICIAN: Is your father a good musician? What does he play?

PRINCE: Piano. The reason he’s good is that he’s totally... he can’t stand any music other than his. He doesn’t listen to anybody. And he’s really strange. He told me one time that he has dreams where he’d see a keyboard in front of his eyes and he’d see his hands on the keyboard and he’d hear a melody. And he can get up and it can be like 4: 30 a.m. and he can walk right downstairs to his piano and play the melody. And to me that’s amazing because there’s no work involved really; he’s just given a gift in each song. He never comes out of the house unless it’s to get something to eat and he goes right back in and he plays all the time. His music. . .one day I hope you’ ll get to hear it. It’s just—it sounds like nothing I’ve ever heard.

God, Prince comes off so desperate when he talks about his dad sometimes. He so wants to be close with this dude (directly or indirectly through his influence) that he will admire and emulate a lifestyle that involves almost complete isolation. The fucker was doomed from the beginning. At least a lot of good music came out of this---But oh, the price it came with.

I don't hate John but I feel sometimes like Miles Davis might have been right about P and John being a bit crazy.

Guys need their fathers in their lives. Nothing odd about that boys need mentors. He definitly got the idea that he needed to be dedicated to his craft 24/7 from his dad.

Agree, this should be a sticky. It sounds like a worthy endeavor. I hope they do a mini-documentary because I want to know how much music there is?

Not the Nelson I'm interested in.

If Prince had been enthusiastic about such a project for his father he'd have initiated it himself.

This Thursday, June 29th would have been Prince's Father's 101st birthday.

This is the day chosen to release the first single off of John L. Nelson's new album.

The song is entitled "Heart of Mine".

Still looking forward to hearing this!

I can't imagine it being commercially successful, but would love to be proven wrong.
