Who Remembers The Jets? (Crush On You, You Got It All)
St. Paul sent out a video earlier of "You Got it All" on the radio, and noted it was his first gold record, and the good memories he had when hearing it.
The band is from Minneapolis, but the players were quite notable.
David Z produced it. Coke Johnson engineered it. Other folks playing were St. Paul, Ricky Peterson, & Matt Fink.
As an interesting side note: I had no idea that Rupert "Escape (Pina Colada)" Holmes wrote "You Got It All"!
Wow, I too did not realize all of those people were involved, nor that the band is from Minneapolis. I enjoyed their radio hits back in the day. Just within the past week I saw the video for "You Got It All" on MTV Classic. Took me way back!

^^^ I didn't realize it either. St. Paul worked a lot as a studio and session musician. He and fDeluxe member Oliver Lieber were all over Paula Abdul's Forever Your Girl album. Oliver wrote a lot of those hits on her album.
This is so interesting, I had no idea about Forever Your Girl either. That is one of my favorites, few albums can send me so directly back to high school. It is quite a trip for me whenever I hear these songs, we used to listen to it A LOT on bus trips, traveling for school events lol. I remember Robert Smith saying in an interview he loved this (well I can't remember if he was saying Forever Your Girl the song or album) too it reminded him of a particularly great party the band had one night

Ahhh.. The Jets. Memories. I had no idea they were from MPLS! I did a lip sync concert in middle school to "Crush On You" with my best friends back then. We had even choreographed our dance from watching video on MTV .

I learned in the last few years about Paul & Oliver being a big part of Forever Your Girl. And I have the CD; just never read the liner notes. I always enjoyed the CD. Just fun pop songs on there.
Paul played keyboards and bass prominently on "Opposites Attract", among working on other tunes. Keith Cohen, who also did remixes for Prince in the early 90s, worked on the record. Eddie M played sax, and Jesse Johnson played on the same song that was written by Ta Mara ("I Need You"). Paul's brother Ricky Peterson worked on the album, too.
Just good Minneapolis synergy. People think these off-shoot groups of Prince never work again, or just muddle in club dates here and there. But the fact is folks like St. Paul, who come from musical pedigrees, have played since they were kids, and continued to work whether they were putting out records of their own or not. Paul toured with so many folks, including Kenny Loggins for years.
The Jets were a Mormon family from Minneapolis, who later ended up making religious music. But now three brothers are suing and fighting the other siblings (and some spouses) for using the name, etc etc etc, blah blah. It's apparently a pretty big rift in the family.
I'm pretty sure The Jets recorded some of their second album at Paisley Park (the one with "Rocket 2 U"). Same with Paula Abdul's "Forever Your Girl" album.

I don't think that's necessarily true. There were a lot of recording places used for Paula's album. But Paisley Park is not one of them. The Petersons have access to other studios besides PP in Minneapolis. Plus they, and people like Oliver Lieber, work from either coast more than anywhere else. It'd be cool if it were true, but it doesn't add up for me.
I remember in 1986,there were rumors that the Jets were gonna open some dates on Prince's Parade Tour.Those plans never materialized,but it was reported that Prince was really impressed with this group.I have their first two albums on vinyl.Interestingly,Prince offered them the track "Neon Telephone" for their second album,but they turned it down.One of the male members said that they simply didn't like it very much.
an interesting story about this song.The track was written/produced by Bobby Nunn (the Motown funk artist who scored a big hit,"She's Just A Groupie",a few years earlier).He was good friends with Philip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire and so he submitted the song to EW&F.They wanted to record it for their 1987 reunion album Touch The World.The problem is,he had also submitted the demo to The Jets and their label wanted them to record it for their second album,Magic.Their label (MCA Records) ended up paying more money for it and offering Nunn a production deal as part of the bargain,so it was given to the Jets.It became a decent-sized hit for them in late '87.

Yes, I know all about Ta Mara's relationships with both Jesse Johnson and Prince. When I said "like Prince's side projects", the implication was that Jesse has said he learned a lot from Prince so it would not have surprised me if one day Oliver Leiber said the Seen on the first album was just the touring band.
But you are probably right, the credits on the second Ta Mara and the Seen are very forthright in saying Jesse was The Seen and played all the instruments so there's no reason to think one album would have sincere liner notes while the other wouldn't.

That's sad to hear.I would love to see an Unsung episode on the Jets.They had two albums that sold well then they seemingly disappeared.
The very first concert I ever went to was a package tour in 1986 with like 5 or 6 bands. I don't remember all of them, but The Jets were one of the artists. I went to see Morris Day who was #2 on the bill with New Edition headlineing.
