I just listened to this whole interview! woot!

I'll keep it short and simply say I love her view on the Vault (release it all as it is) !! dancing jig music nod

I hope she is one of the people we get to see at the 2017 Cele!!

Yes, let's hope so. Are you going? Also, do you know about the event being held next year where Susan Rogers will be speaking about Prince recordings? The moderators immediately moved that thread from the Prince music forum to fan gatherings, but there is also a thread on this forum so that more people can learn about what is bound to be a great learning experience.

Yes, I'll be at the Cele! cool

Thx for the heads-up about the other event...I definitely missed that thread.

Such an incredible person with amazing experiences.

It's interesting she describes his drum playing as "terrible" and suggests his timing wasn't good.

.

This is interesting because Prince is revered as being a multi-instrumentalist, however, he wasn't classically trained. He certianly wasn't a disciplined musician. This is where Wendy And Lisa completed his missing parts.

.

/- Let the white washing begin. The total opposite of what Sheila E has said. She put in in the top ten of funk drummers. He is playing the drums on Tamborine and the Flesh boots. This is the same chick who did not like David and Basheshba.

Did you note where she commented about him being in extreme pain in the last years Laura ?

then she caught herself and said something like "although Im not the person to be commenting on that..."

She was referring to just his playing on "The Cross" and how the tempo on it drifted towards the end. She made no similar comments when she spoke about him playing drums on other songs.

The fact that Prince seemed to despised her commenting on what took place with his music, and he was implying that she doesn't know quite as much as she thinks she does, has left me a little jaded when it comes to her. Also, a lot of the stuff she said in books like Possessed has rubbed me the wrong way. They just seemed pure speculation. I'm not 100% on board with her. hmph! I would like to be fair and give her a chance though. We'll see... [Edited 12/10/16 10:59am]

I felt the same way but I listen and once she explained her self here she did not come off as bad as before. She comes off a little goofy in places but all in all I liked what she had to say especially these things.

1 dispelling the myth that some people have that he was on drugs when he was just working like a demon.

2. Letting everyone know how fair he was with the employees.

3. Being an honest artist. I have always thought his songs were like his journal or diary.

4. The different between and artist and a star.

5. Making sure he gets credit for the things he was doing with drum machines and how he built his own competition.

Prince’s employee was also his half-brother Duane, He was Prince’s valet, amongst other things. He would make sure his car, the Thunderbird, was taken to the car wash. Prince did what a lot of us did at the time.

If we had a song we would print it onto a cassette. Prince would drive around in the car playing it. When he was done, he would toss it into the back seat.

A lot of things were finding their way onto the black market. It turned out it was the car wash. The people who were detailing the car had access to the backseat; a treasure trove of unreleased music.

There is also a rumor that Duane stole a bunch of music and put it out on the bootleg market.

That is because her comments fucking pissed me off so much I got the song wrong eek LOL. I did listen to the Red Bull talk and I have a better opinion about her. I still thing she was wrong about that song but I also get that she is an RnB junky so that song may have sounded sappy to her

I sincerely hope the Estate do not allow Susan Rogers anywhere near the vault. Prince detested her and she was the only engineer he publically criticised. In one of his last interviews, he questions her mental health and makes it emphatic he wants her nowhere near his vault.

Out of respect for Prince's wishes I hope this doesn't happen. Susan has been trading on her time with Prince for decades.

She was carrying on about how she would go in the vault and do this and that to the music and it did come off as disrespectful in fact all of the weird panel discussions and carnegie hall tributes were people claiming to be fans but acting as if Prince were already dead when he was actually still moving forward with new music.

I can only imagine how upseting and disappointed he must have been and now that he is gone the asskissing from people who were being disrespectful has kicked in to overdrive because they want a job working for the estate. It is sad.

FYI, here is an extract from a Susan Rogers interview that was posted on housequake.com 9 May, 2006:

HQ: In an interview Prince said: "You think Susan Rogers knows me?" he asked. "You think she knows anything about my music?". Susan Rogers, for the record, doesn't know anything about my music. Not one thing. The only person who knows anything about my music (pause for very pointed effect)....is me." How do you feel about this?

SR: Yes, Prince is correct on this, but only in one sense. In another sense, namely the experience of listening to music created by another, Prince knows his music the least. Because creating music and consuming music are two distinct processes.

When a chef prepares a new meal, he knows everything that goes into it, including how he intended it to taste. So when he sits down to eat it, he already knows something about it, and that affects how it tastes to him. The customer who knows nothing about what went into the meal will taste it from a different perspective, one that the chef will never be able to experience. So the customer knows something about the meal that the chef will never know.

Prince fans know how his music makes them feel, regardless of whether or not he intended the music to move them that way. Only he knows what inspired a song or he wanted his music to say but there is a gap between how it felt to make it and how it feels to listen to it. Like a lot of things, it is a two-sided experience. Science isn't science until it is published; food isn't food until it is eaten; and art isn't art until it is interpreted.

As for knowing him as a person, I have said for the record that I am only qualified to speak on his studio life from 1983 to 1988. His life beyond the studio doors, outside of that time-period, is not known to me. Since he has had a rich life, I don't entirely know him.

Laura - You can hate away. Guess you think you're defending Prince. Considering your quick wit and temper I can just imagine if everything you said to your family, friends and associates for 50 yrs was archived as gospel. Life is a lot messier, more elastic, and less 2 dimensional than you are trying to make it. Especially with a person as creative as Prince. Grab that essence wherever you can without so much (speculative) judging. Forest for the trees.

She seems like a nice woman and insightful for the most part. I do challenge her taste a bit though because she seemed to be implying that Tambourine was a better song than 17 days..Susan needs a re-listen of those two songs. 17 Days has better lyics in the verse. Tambourine has catchier lyrics in the chorus. BUT 17 days is the song with more heart and substance. And its catchier as hell. I love Tambourine though.

I value all the insight she shares about working with Prince, but I could not disagree more with her contention that his lyrics were not a strength. "Adore," "When Doves Cry," and "Sign 'O The Times" are just a few of his great songs.
