Wendy & Lisa were asked to perform Prince’s “Sometimes It Snows in April” with soul man D’Angelo on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” a few days after the death. They declined.

“I couldn’t even play my piano for a month or more,” Coleman said.

“I couldn’t play my guitar,” Melvoin added.

“We could barely talk to each other,” Brown said.

I can't blame them in the slightest for declining. Hell, it's over 4 months later and I can barely get through one day without crying about this. Can you imagine how they must feel? confused

I still can't talk about Prince with people face to face and not get choked up. A lot of times when I'm talking about Prince on the ORG since April 21st still I just get choked up out of nowhere. So I can image to get on stage in First Avenue, that history of Prince and First Avenue and them and try to memorialize and say goodbye...

I'm feeling ya on this. All of our journeys on this are as similar as they are vastly different. I sort of feel like The Tonight Show gig would have been premature of them, and ill-planned. They're part of something bigger (eg: The Revolution), so to preempt any future gigs together by doing Fallon would have just not been cool in the course of history.

I can get through days without crying, but when it does hit me, I just let it out. I have to live and be productive. There's a time for grief, and a time for joy. A time for sadness, and a time for laughter. I've laughed in life more than I've cried sine April 21. But that doesn't cheapen my sense of loss, and grief. Don't get me wrong - for days and days after I was just sad and angry and hurt.

Yes, those shows were definately too soon.
I could even see it on Sheila E. She probably would have waited too if it wasn't for the 'No relevant' comment. I didn't like that whole thing and the BET connection. Because then it seems to take the focus off of remembering Prince and BET proving a point. But Sheila had a lot in her and was trying to get it out everywhere. I like when she said she remembered how they ended the PR tour with Baby I'm A Star together and then watching those actually clips from 1984/85...

We've all been someplace 2gether and only we 'the fans/exband-proteges/bands' know what it's like.

I wish folks could understand the "not relevant" comment. Linda Perry was right. Sheila E. isn't relevant when it comes to popular music on the top 40 charts. Perry wasn't taking away from Sheila's talent, longevity, history, or otherwise. Moreover, Perry was making a comment about pop radio today. Hell, on some levels, Prince wasn't relevant to top 40 radio either. People could look and say "When did he even have a hit last?" We know better of course, but again - Perry's comments were about pop music today and how dismal it is, not Sheila's relevance in music overall.

And she certainly didn't agree to the BET gig just to prove Perry wrong. Sheila E. has nothing to prove to anyone but herself at this point.

One could argue that Sheila probably felt a black awards show was more of the correct place to play in this situation, opposed to a gentrified-as-fuck audience. Not sure if that's valid or not, though.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Oh I understand what Linda Perry was saying. That is why at the time I was saying it was the Billboard Awards and in that context Linda was right.
But all the drama that came about surrounding it was exhausting. And I think it 'tainted' the BET 'tribute' and gave the wrong fuel to BET (not Sheila E)

Sheila has played at all kinds of shows like the Billboards. I believe she performed on drums behind Kanye West 'Jesus Walks' and I think recently at another show maybe with Kanye and Kirk Franklin
Sheila E plays all music for everyone with everyone so I don't think she is held to a specific audience
I just think all that drama was attached to it.

The show tonight was incredible. There were sound issues - but it wasnt flat by a long shot.

I put my phone down and paid attention to the people who were there to commune in the music and joy and brilliance of Prince.

You couldnt take the energy in that room and make it work in 1 minute instagram clips - it wasnt about that - I cant even describe
how good it was because everything isnt about clean neat edges that fit into social media - this was some real human beings not performing for clicks and likes but for love and reverence.

Imagine that.

It was messy and amazing.

Thanks for posting the video. The concert is a bittersweet yet wonderful tribute to a musical genius! It is great to see the Revolution, Dez, Andre, Bilal, Apples, etc on stage together! smile.

im going tomorrow too - its cathartic and way more intense than i expected but in a good way. i'm not noting setlists or crticing anything at all - and i hope people don't - its so important to experience the communion over the loss of our hero - and honor him by enjoying and participating and being together in music.

i will note however that a zillion people should have been filming the stuff from the dirty mind album and the 'prince' album - the world doesnt need moar kiss videos -

Ok maybe I'm reading too much into this but I've not seen one comment, one tweet not anything from Sheila on these concerts (she has been tweeting otherwise). Londell McMillan was at both shows and sheesh even Shelby J and Liv Warfiled tweeted about it. Is there perhaps some bad blood between Sheila and the Revolution members? It just seems odd to me that she wouldn't at least give these shows a shout out on social media. confused

I doubt there is anything wrong. If it is they are all classy enough to keep it between themselves.
From 1983 onward they have been jamming 2gether. St Paul had them all at his home after Prince passed away... Let's just keep the energy positive.
That other 'FB rant' has just drained me, and I just want to have positive energy for everyone.

I hope you're right. I just thought it was odd she didn't give a shout out on Twitter like others have. I'm glad Londell was there. I'm hoping that means he's nabbed some or all for the October tribute.

My guess is that L.McM will try to make the Oct thing about money so they can pay his tax bill. I think the acts will reflect this thinking if they can get anyone to join. The music biz is political and P is legend but .... you never know. They showed NO love at mtv so who knows.

This is a business. Of course it's about money. The court ordered the estate to monetize itself. It has to have cash to survive. Did y'all think Paisley Park was just going to survive on rainbow candies and unicorn farts? C'mon now.

I doubt they're going to have random people with no connection to Prince or who weren't influenced by him as who would buy tickets for that? But I'm sure whoever is there we'll see plenty of complaining about it.

Btw, Londell tweeted his disgust at no mention of Prince at the MTV video awards. And it was shitty. Prince was one of the acts that made MTV what it was back in the day. Even original VJ Martha Quinn thought there should have been some tribute (for Bowie too).

How come all these old friends, lovers, ex-wives who loved Prince so much can make their way out to Minn. for concerts, memorials, etc., now, but they couldn't find their way there when he needed them the most? After that plane scare, I would've just flown out and strolled into PP like I owned the place to check on him, but none of them did. sad

Hindsight is 20/20. People did talk to him after the plane scare and he said he was fine. One of his backup singers Alicia called him and he said he was perfect and she should save her prayers. What is she supposed to do, say she doesn't believe him and fly out to PP? Another former band member talked to P just a couple days before he died and again P said he was fine and not to worry. What are people supposed to do when he's telling them that? confused

Because Prince was really good at 3 things: Music, keeping people at arm's length, and hiding what he was really doing.

No one is fine after they almost died a day later. Anyway, like I said, seems some knew he was taking painkillers or heard he was and I'm sure they saw recent pics of him looking frail. Jill even said the girls noticed at Denise's funeral how frail he looked. Like I said, so many are expressing their undying love for him now and are able to make the trip out to Minn. after he's gone. It's easy to make a call and be fooled or maybe Prince didn't want to burden anyone or was embarrassed by his situation. I just wish one of these people would've taken the chance and just flew out to PP to check on him in person. I don't believe he would've been able to fool his OG like he did the NG he surrounded himself with. The OG knew him best.
