Prince & the Revolution survivors talk about First Avenue 'grieving' concerts

source

“I really believe everyone in here hasn’t really begun the grief process,” Melvoin said. “These shows that we’re doing, if I can speak for the five of us and sound slightly New Age about it, we need to grieve and transition him into his death and get the audience to be part of that. It feels like his spirit is sort of stuck here right now with a lot of uncertainty and unanswered questions and unanswered hopes. There’s a lot of loss.”

“We didn’t get to go to the funeral,” Coleman said, referring to the service at Paisley Park three days after Prince’s death. “There was no proper tribute that we felt.”

“We felt left out a bit,” said Matt Fink.

Individually, the members of the Revolution are “looking for a version of salvation for the five of us,” Melvoin said. “We don’t want to put heaviness or importance on these three shows. ‘What are they gonna do? Who’s gonna be their singer? What songs are they gonna do? Why would they even do this without Prince?’ We know it’s out there.

I wish there wasnt a reason for these concerts, but this is the perfect way for me to put a period on the end of the sentence, grieve, say goodbye, pay my respects and tie off the journey of my life with Prince in a fitting way.

The big stadium show is just not my style and while I've seen Prince countless times in stadiums - it was the small venues, private parties, aftershows and one-offs where I was transformed smile

This is going to be epic

I grew up in Minneapolis, and I don't have tickets. So, I'm pretty bummed. I'm hoping the bootleggers are in full force.... I wish they would stream it live.

I concurr. I live in Minneapolis and got to see him many times during the Friday night parties. I also attended a concert in Bercy, France, one at the Target Center in Minneapolis, and one at the Northrop Auditorium in Minnneapolis. There was nothing like the small venues where the experience was unique.

This is my normal life. These marital standards cannot be recreated with money.

So that explains why Dr. Funkenberry said on one of his episodes I think episode 16 that the Revolution weren't going to be in the Memorial (along with the time). According to the Dr., the family asked the revolution to attend the memorial and the band decline maybe because they felt they were disrespected for not being invited to the first memorial, I dont know?

By the way Wendy looks fine and I love her black gothic sporty look.

I skimmed through the article and that is cool The Revolution is going to play the songs they know and I kind of respect that.

Damn.....

Gosh I just want to hug each and every one of those guys!... BrownMark saying he cried every day! sad

I got the purple warm fuzzies when I read this portion...

"Dealing with fans

Even though Wendy & Lisa had a Twitter account from Day 1, they've ignored it — and their own website — since Prince passed.

"I haven't wanted to look at anything," Melvoin said.

"I've not been interested," Coleman said.

However, Brown remains active on social media, communicating with 65,000 to 100,000 fans.

"I've only seen two or three negative posts and when I get done [corresponding] with them, they're positive," he said. "It's an emotional healing for fans as well. Fans need closure, they're suffering. I get people who e-mail every day, crying. They're hurt and they're in disbelief."

Brown pointed to a quote on his Facebook page that ended up in the New York Times: "We need this as much as you do."

"It's the truth," he said."

I hadn't heard that. Interesting. Sheila E also has a show scheduled for October 13th in New York and that hasn't been cancelled. I'm assuming she will not be participating either. Those pretty much are the people that I would have wanted to see. I'm going to the Revolution shows at First Avenue and seeing Sheila E at the end of September, so it's all good in that respect.

I know it seems like a silly notion but I really wish all of the purple family could be together and celebrate. Everything seems so...seperated. I mean, I understand, I truly do. They are all musicians, artists. They all have their own gigs and things to go to. But if there could just be one event where everyone is included (egos, hurt feeling, or whatever aside)...that would be stellar. So many seperate events going on. It's just so scattered...and really sad. It would be so great if the tribute coming up in Minnie could include everyone in some way and that it could be televised for the purple fam that can not go. I think it should be done not just for us, but for him. Just show some love- a huge thank you. I am really glad the Revolution is doing this though. Such a beautiful and talented group of people. I feel like they've been kind of left out a bit. But of course, I don't know what's going on behind the scenes. I really want to go. sad Closure would be nice.

I also have been wondering too if there some recent fallout between Sheila E and the Nelson family. She sort of criticize of PP tour being open too soon, and also she supposed to be the music director at the memorial. Like I said on the other thread how she is going to do that and plus scheduled to be in NYC on Oct 13 at the same time? Sheila E is highly respected musician and she has many connections and I know she would have gotten more people involved than Mint Condition as they are the only muscial act who are officially have been schedule to do the Memorial. But I am fan of Mint Condition btw.

Yeah I think Dr Funkenberry sort of talk about the Revolution and the time arent going to be part of memorial its episode 16 I believed in his videos. He also mentioned he heard there are some behind the scene chaos.

But I am happy that you are going to those concerts. I hope you get your closure...

Well, Jill Jones just went off on FB talking about don't tag her in anything REVOLUTION related. Saying they a Milli Vanilli band, and lied about not being invited to the memorial (cause they declined), etc.

What is her beef with everyone? Sheila? REVOLUTION? She be insinuating stuff about folk, but don't come after her "truth"

Yeah I agree on that one. I mean I understand the Revolution wanted to be invited but I hope they realized Tyka and them just lost their brother. To the group, Prince was their boss and friend but to Tyka and em he is family even though I am Revolution/Wendy and Lisa fan I still want to remain neutral and not automatically take sides. Lisa and Wendy should understand that since they lost their brothers years ago.

Wow Jill is/was going hardcore on the Revolution and she took veiled shots at Wendy and Susannah.

I won't post it on here though. She also since hide the post from public viewing so you have to be her friend to see the post.

Yeah it is hard to believe the family didn't invite the revolution.

I am Prince fan first and I refused to take any sides. So you might see me criticize the family like I did on other threads and I even criticized Prince but at the end of the day I am Prince fan before anyone else in his camp.

I have been saying for months there definately some cliques going on among the associates and I refuse to take part of that. Even though the revolution is my favorite band I like the bands prior to the revolution and post revolution.

Well remember right after he passed she said she was asked to help organize a tribute and she would be musical director? She also said she wanted to get all the original people. I'm thinking Bremer and Londel McMillan got involved and they want to take the tribute in another direction, i.e. Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Stevie Wonder were mentioned later. I'm sure she was probably hurt by that and know that they are just going for $$$ now. I was disappointed when I heard those people were wanted for the tribute. I'm more with Sheila's idea about having all the bands he had and proteges, but I get that a non Prince diehard could care less and they want to attract even the casual Prince fan. Well f**k that! They were not the ones who supported him through the years and are really distraught by his passing. I do know that Sheila's show in New York was scheduled before that date was announced for the Prince tribute. Sorry to ramble.

If the Revolution members did lied that they they should be called out and just admitted that they were declined after the family invited them. The Revolution need to realize too this whole mourning process isn't about them even though they were around at the height of P's career.

I read somewhere shortly after P's death Matt Fink said Revolution had gotten offers to perform on various award shows and they declined because it was too soon. I hope Matt Fink speak out more of what is going on because I love the DR and he keeps it real.

Wendy & Lisa were asked to perform Prince’s “Sometimes It Snows in April” with soul man D’Angelo on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” a few days after the death. They declined.

“I couldn’t even play my piano for a month or more,” Coleman said.

“I couldn’t play my guitar,” Melvoin added.

“We could barely talk to each other,” Brown said.

Co-sign to your post.

They will have some challenges to face because so far only Mint Condition is schedule to be there on Oct 13. They should have gone with Sheila E's idea and have it televised.
