The quote is from a Dec. 2015 interview with Ebony Magazine. It is pretty easy to find if you search social media. Thank you, I actually did find it. Very enlightening. I think he was being honest and what he says about the song rings true to me. Even before I read it, I said Vanity had just left him and it would have been more plausible that the song was more about their breakup than anything else due to the time period. It was only a month before the recording that he met Susannah Melovin. I just don't think that was enough time to develop that kind of emotional connection to justify some of the lyrics in that song. Especially, "If we got married, would that be cool?" Just think, in the space of a month, he would have had to meet Susannah, spend enough time with her to fall in love and build that kind of bond with her even though she was already in a relationship, then break up, write the song, then record it. All in a month!? Just wasn't believable to me. I wonder how this rumor got started that this song was about SM? Was it only due to the fact that she had a boyfriend at the time and the line "Do you want him or do you want me' Did she ever say that he told her it was about her? How does anyone even knows unless he says it? And as some have proved from this article, even when he does say it, can we really believe? Lol Here is the interview: https://www.facebook.com/...=meddle.it [Edited 8/2/16 6:42am]

She was definetly given a ring. It was pretty widely reported in the media when it happened. If you watch the anotherlover..video from the 1986 Detroit b-day show you will see the ring. I don't doubt the validity of their relationship...but I also think P may have been a serial proposer!

who else did he propose to? SMelvoin, Sheila and his 2 wives are the only ones i've heard of? there were plenty others. Prince #MUSICIANICONLEGEND

Susannah being engaged having an engagement ring and living with Prince was open knowledged.
I think we talked about it in another thread about Sheila e being engaged(along with Susannah, Mayte etc) Prince's life was totally intertwined with the music, the fantasy, the utopia etc. He lived his life onstage/video/concert/studio
The Belle of St. Mark, he don't talk 2 strangers, he's so mysterious
There's a nasty rumor that's goin' 'round
When we look at Susannah her connection was intertwined with Family:Twin sister Wendy, brother Jonathon Melvoin who was friends with Prince, did some stuff on a couple albums, keyboardist forthe Family band, the Melvoin father, also Clare Fisher is is friend, Lisa Coleman(and David Coleman) family friends of the Melvoins etc
Now the Mayte relation is a much different thing. Prince went from being with women close to his age, and women of a maturity. To someone who was much much younger.
Prince was definately in love with the ideal of love and being in love. marriage a part of that early on his music. But outside of Susannah Sheila E Mayte (I heard he was juggling the possibility with Nona Gaye?) and then Mani. What oher women did he allegedly propose to? I never heard of any others.

I've never heard of any others either.
Mani was the only one not directly intertwined with the music.

I read Nona Gaye "thought" they were engaged but then hear P gave Mayte a ring. When she questioned him he got defensive. So, that makes 5 we heard about (which is a lot) so I'm assumming at least 5 more we havent heard about lol. I think the Susannah, along with the 2 wives were the only serious proposals. With the others I suspect marriage was alluded to just to keep them around.
The ebony interview was interesting. Some songs were just written for scenes in the movie and he let it known that TBO is one of them. It's not about Vanity or SM. It's about the scene with Morris and Appolonia at the club. Actually Susannah went on record via her manager that she never thought the song was about her. Susan Rogers is the one who suggested that it was.

I think it is also widely known that sheila is gay. To add an additional lyric to the above song "If they knew the real truth, they'd probably die" She had an affair with Prince (many gay women find him attractive) but her preference is for women. Which is somthing to this day she seems to actively hide.

Thanks so much for posting the article! My gosh, Prince seems so different in these last years! I mean in a good way. I've never read an article where he was this candid and reflective really. Oh and I love Hit and Run Phase 2.

Not a serious gesture, but that fact that he's always alluding to it is telling. His statement was a little disjointed but I think he was saying that the part where he sang, do you want him or do you want me, was for the scene in Purple Rain and the part where he sang, the beautiful ones you always seem to lose, was specifically for Vanity because she had just quit the movie. I could be wrong. The statement was a bit confusing. Did anyone else come to the same conclusion? https://www.facebook.com/...=meddle.it [Edited 8/3/16 4:40am]

You have to remember that Prince was speaking to a reporter and he knew that his quotes were going to be public record. He makes the first statement that TBO was about the scene in the movie and about Vanity, who had just left him when he wrote it. Later in the interview he says the song was about him with a laugh. I think he was realizing that he was revealing more than he wanted to already in the interview. If you look at the comments that the reporter Miles said before the interview was posted, it's very telling. He said that Prince asked him to keep some secrets and that they was talking about The Beautiful ones and Vanity, as well as Tidal and Morris Day. I think that is one of the reasons that Prince had the interview pulled, because Prince had revealed more than he wanted to. Then we have the Melbourne show where Prince was so open and candid because he didn't have time to think about his image or public reaction. He just kept it real. In the show he said she knows about this one, before he sang TBO and he also repeated her name Denise at the end of the song. So if she knew about the song, then at some point in time, Prince told Vanity the song was about her. The person who started the rumor about the song being about Susannah is the same one Prince blasted in the same interview, Susan Rogers. I don't understand why this is still a debate. He wrote the song about Vanity end of story.

nona only believed he was going to marry her. no ring = just a line. "i'm gonna marry you and take care of you." sounds just like some player shit. and played right into family history: janice was 16 when she was left alone with marvin gaye. they did get married.
-- just like he allegedly told judy hill she reminded him of his first lover.... that's old school game but it doesn't make it true. impressionable young women believe what they want and need to believe. Prince #MUSICIANICONLEGEND
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Bottom line, most of this stuff is heresay and conjecture. He only said "I do" to two women. Whoever said that alluding to marriage is a player move is right. A whole lot of men besides Prince use that line.....especially old school playas. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

That is sorta what I thought, concerning Nona. Plus she was 'allegedly' doing drugs? That wasn't going to go far with Prince. So he turned 2 a very wholesome image...

LOL I heard the same thing (only on the Org though) IDK about that... It's possible. "All of my purple life, I've been looking for a MAN!!" she stress the word like that

i had posted ona p and sheila thread about an interview sheila did with candy dulfer in which candy asks sheila why she never married and had her own family. sheila anwsered that since she had been working through being raped as a child, she found it difficult to have relationships with men. i can believe that. but the absence of a romantic/sexual relationship with a man does not mean she has romantic/sexual relationship with women. two separate things but maybe some people don't get that. interesting and sad. to be honest i never thought that much about vanity after she left prince. i knew she dated adam ant because i loved him too in the 80's. i loved her 'under the influence' album and thought she was gorgeous in' the last dragon' but never knew much about her life. i only found out about her evangelism work around 2004. I've heard that Sheila E. was lesbian twenty years ago. I heard it was well known to the people who knew her, and that she was also a very sweet person.

great interview, hard to follow his train of thought, but maybe it's me, i'm kinda tired but he seems to be really all over the place. Anyway, strange how he said susan Rodgers was a threat and that he should fear her. She was the one who made him sound like a nut and was scared of him when he had that exstasy trip. Also, the one who sold his jacket to hard rock sounds like Brown Mark, he's the only male who talked shit about Prince and didn't seem to really like him. As always, as a musician, Prince sounds like a total pro and knows what he's saying as far as that goes.

[Edited 8/3/16 16:21pm] Good point that it might be because some of it was cut out, or maybe he talked disjointedly on purpose so he could throw everybody off. Too funny, even when he's being candid, he's playing mind games.

It has long been rumored that she is "married" to a woman with whom she has also worked very closely with for many many years. I'm not going to name her because she is not a celeb or P associate. I will say that she isn't a musician. A little home work and you'll figure it out.

older generations do that, if she were a 25 year old, she might not feel the need to. erm, sorry guys. i need receipts. rumors usually pan out over 20 yrs esp. in this day and age. every other rumor of 20yrs ago has revealled itself one way or another. countless examples; from the women i mentioned in my earlier post to the "rumors " about mj's behavoir with adolescent boys, r.kelly's behavior with underage girls, queen latifah and her girl, missy elliot and tweet, the boy band scenes, whitney smoking crack, bill cosby the rapist, charlie sheen..... all of that has been proven one way or the other over time. i heard sheila was gay back in 98', still no receipts. -- fwiw, i know people who have seen keanu with both men and women (another popular rumor in the 90s) but no one has "proof" or confession the sheila's gay. just like my parents told me prince was gay back in 85'. the man has gone on to eternity and still absolutely no proof or allegations that he ever had a male lover.
-- trust me, i'm cool with sheila being gay if she is, but when there is only rumor after 20+ yrs...... i can't believe it. sorry. a slow burning fire will blaze if it goes on long enough. all smoke and no blaze... Prince #MUSICIANICONLEGEND
