I think his feelings were easily hurt and that's what happened during that conversation. We are just getting one side so don't know the whole story. His 'I'm never speaker to you again' attitude is childish, sure, but it's a defense mechanism often used by emotionally wounded people.
I remember an interview he gave where he commented on negative things some of his friends said about him publically after they left. He said something to the effect that "if we loved each other then, we should love each other now." I think the turncoats really made him distrust people's claims of love.
I don't recall SM saying anything too negative about him publically which I've always respected about her. But her FB page still says "made shitty pay at Paisley Park" which is pretty tacky in my opinion. The gig was essentially a gift to keep his "friends" employed. He paid them today's equivalant of $600 a week (which is what my parent's support 3 kids on) with all album related expenses paid. Quit if you think you deserve more; don't moan about it 30 years later.
But what happened in their personal relationship is between them. All is fair in love and war, so it is silly to take sides. Love them both.
Yeah that interview was about the Time. After that break up. But was it negative stuff or was it factual stuff. I mean the were rightful upset at Jimmy & Terry being fired while in the works of making Purple Rain.
That was a 1990 interview: Prince also said he didn't fire Jimmy & Terry, that 'remember' it was Morris's band. Which is still a play on the old game.
I've never seen' made shitty pay at Paisley Park' on her official FB though. But Prince did say something nasty about her in an article (along with Morris) and then he had the article removed. This was before the Piano & Microphone tour.
The article was reprinted by Ebony and he did not say anything nasty about her. Susan has been going around saying that "The Beautiful Ones" was written about her. Prince said he wrote the song before he met her and that the song is in Purple Rain and that she is not in the movie. Later he would say at Piano and Mic show that the song was written about Vanity. He was calling out a old girlfriend that will not move on with her life.
He also said that the Time was Morris Day and him without the other guys even playing on the records and that he wanted to do a project with just him and Morris. Nothing nasty was said about Morris. He was even at Paisley Park to perform in January.
I so wish he had a chance to finish his book. He spent so many years not responding to so much crap that it is now all seen as factual. I also feel sorry for people like Susan who seem unable to move on with their lives . Is it something that we are finding out about all the good stuff he did behind the scenes while old employees spend their time bitching and moaning. We never even heard Prince complaining about pain or health issues he just went out and worked his ass off until the end. [Edited 7/26/16 5:34am] |

How has she not moved on?
And what did she say that was bitter. Susannah wasn't the only one that said the song was inspired by her. This isn't something new and it came out of the camp at the time. And Prince did meet her by the time of the 1983 Dance Benefit show(she was there). I think these replies are his reply to her around the time the Family were talking to him about doing a new album. If we didn't have in print him saying Forever In My Life was about Susannah he probably would have said it wasn't. Are we talking about the same article? The reason Prince said those thing about Morris's son and later that Morris was a good drummer was because of something tart he said prior. And he was accusing "susan rogers" of some Vault stuff
All this stuff proceeded the Micro/Piano tours where Prince seemed to have a change of heart from that article he had removed. He had it removed for a reason. Cause it wasn't good.
Kim Upsher died in Decemeber 2015 right around the time he started/planned the Piano tours (which proceeded the Paris attacks)

Susan has 'former made shitty pay at Paisley Park" on the top of her Facebook page. That seems bitter to me. It does not matter what Susan has said the writer of the song is telling you it is not about her. That should be enough. We are finding out from Vanity brother in law that Prince and Vanity stayed in touch for years I think he wrote that song her. You are right he said things about Morris being a good drummer before but he does not trash him in the article. He also made those comments about Susan Rogers because of the dumb stuff she said in the BBC show about the Vault. She said she wanted to go into vault and get stuff out. How would you respond to someone who wants to meddle with your work. I am looking at the article right now in the Ebony special issue. He should not have pulled because he is being real and he does actually talk about Phase 2. I am sorry he did not spend the whole article about Susan Melvoin [Edited 7/26/16 14:34pm] |

we got paid weekly. We got paychecks and it wasn't a lot of money. No joke. I mean, it's embarrassing. But, when we were that young, it was for the love of the music. I didn't have a family, so, I wasn't worried about the kids, the mortgage or anything like that. I was along for the ride.

Prince said he didn't fire Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis... So it does matter what others have said. I think it's a bitter response from Prince. Maybe he wrote if inspired by Susannah & Vanity. He also talke regularly with Susannah up till 2013

He paid them today's equivalant of $600 a week (which is what my parent's support 3 kids on) with all album related expenses paid. Quit if you think you deserve more; don't moan about it 30 years later.

That was a 1990 interview: Prince also said he didn't fire Jimmy & Terry, that 'remember' it was Morris's band. Which is still a play on the old game.

ERRRRRR.............??????????????????????
If this is the Ebony magazine article where he praised Morris and his kids, said that to him the new Time record should be a Prince/Morris thing because that's how it was in the beginning.... I don't recall him saying anything bad at all about Susannah directly. I think he said something to the effect that "people like to say this song is about them, but it's about Vanity". It's hardly "shitty". imo |

I don't recall him saying anything bad at all about Susannah directly. I think he said something to the effect that "people like to say this song is about them, but it's about Vanity". It's hardly "shitty". imo --- Nothing shitty about anything he said in that article. Anytime he is not kissing the butts of the Melvoin's. |

Even Prince I suspect was in debt to the label at the begining his first record was a bomb. If they felt their pay was low they could have left. You don't keep bitching about a job from 30 years ago especially if it was for the love of the music. Both Susans need to more on. It is not Susan Rogers job to protect Prince's legacy. No one appointed her to anything. You really don't see how she was stepping out of bounds not to mention speaking as if he was already dead!! I belive he got Morris to fire Jimmy and Terry in addition they admit that they were told not to give the sound away to other groups and they missed a show. Anyway they landed on their feet and never looked back. As far as Vanity is concerned I figured out a long time ago that this women will never catch a break on this board. According to her brother in law Prince wrote long letters to her and he has said he has copies of the letters. If he publishs those letters I think you and other orgers are going to be surprised.
Which thread is it Denise's bro in law was on? -- It is in the "How soon is too "in Associated artist. |

Yeah. It was posted here. And then the article disappeared. It was one of those I wish I never read. He also said some off the wall thing about Susan Rogers breaking into the Vault and doing what she wanted with the music or something. He said something about Morris Day but finished off with he would rather take Morris's son or something like that.
This was all a few months before he decided to do the Piano/Mic tour and talking about times gone buy. He seemed to felt bad about what he originally put out. Then said he was doing a memoirs and going to talk about all the wonderful people who worked/helped him on his journey. Then Vanity died.
jeez, sounds bizarre and paranoid. |

So he actually said that "The Beautiful Ones" was written about Vanity and not Susannah"? Which article is that, and is it still around?
I also agree that Susannnah seemed bitter if after 30 years she had that comment about Shitty pay from PP on her FB page. That's definitely bitter! [Edited 7/28/16 4:27am]

i would like to add that SMelvoin has said in print in at leat 2 books, that she believed TBO "was not exactly out thing/relationship but there is some of it in there." considering p's habit of overlapping relationships, this is most likely the case. vanity had just left him but not for another man; susannah was the one with a boyfriend in LA. "do you want him,or do you want me?"
---
the fans put more empahsis on which song is for what woman. fans still pick their favorite and imagine "she was the one!" if we know anything about prince it's that he was unable to have clearly defined affections and relationships with women. jill jones said it was like he spun a wheel to see who he would be with for the day,the week etc. that most definately includes denise and mayte and susannah(who appear to be the fan favorites for the love of his life). i never understood why people need to believe any of them were altogether unique or special in his affections. It seemed that smelvoin, mayte and jill lasted the longest because they were the most patient. that says everthing about THEIR personality and feelings for him, NOT the other way around.
---
it's crystal clear to me that denise was his "crazy bitch girlfriend"(she was only crazy and bitchy because of the drugs but still a nutcase) that had him sprung sexually. they were around the right age(early 20s) for it and she was as drugged up as she was gorgeous. and then she left him! every man i've asked about it says, "yep, we all have that one and you never forget em!" that hardly says soulmate love. if prince's letters to her, mentioned on another thread, prove me wrong i'll admit my error. likewise, mayte being on the payroll for 6 yrs before he married her and he controlled every single aspect of the relationship and wedding, including her dress, what she ate etc! just like soulmates do, right? I still think Prince being angry with her after that 2013 conversation, might be changing the story.
I say again, if it wasn't in print that he said Forever In My Life was about Susannah, he might have denied that too. I've said before that a person can be the inspiration behind the song, or a part of it. And like you said the not only was she in a relationship with another man Prince met her fully(at that show) Even though he met her a few times before and assumed it was Wendy. And Susannah was being courted by Berry Gordy(?) for Motown and she talked to Prince about it and he wanted her to come work with him/them. Do U want Him or do U want Me works in both cases.
Around that time Vanity and him, still in a relationship, I highly doubt he was thinking about marrying her. And she was gone soon after this. I think Prince said this song was about Vanity(Vanity character) because she just died, and he was on the piano tour.
The Beautiful Ones wasn't a part of the original PR script with Vanity. G-Spot & Electric Intercourse was. |

This whole romantic relationship with Prince and Susannah seems overblown to me as an outsider looking in. Unless I get proof and an accurate verifiable timeline, I wont think much of it. |

just seems that i keep reading about this susannah/prince serious relationship but i dont see much to back it up other than hearsay so its confusing to me. especially when it comes to when it actually happened.
and sorry OldFriends. I may not post as much cuz you know, i have things to do outside of the Org, but I'll be around. [Edited 7/28/16 11:09am] |

I think I can put together a timeline for you based on interviews and such. Actually I'm glad you posted. This might be pretty cool.

Good. No third party hearsay. Right from Susannah and Prince, and folks can judge for themselves.
I probably will post even less but I'll still lurk around and post as needed. At the end of the day he's gone and it kind of makes things less fun. |

All in good fun, I'm gonna throw a wrench in your theory. I think that line,"Do you want him or do you want me" could have worked for Vanity's situation too. Speaking of timeline, nothing happens in a day. Vanity and Prince could have easily been at war with each other for weeks or even months leading up to her departure. He could have known things were coming to an end between them. That kind of break up doesn't just happen one stormy night, lol. He could have written that song when things started to fall apart for them before the official break up because he knew she was on her way out.
Remember she was offered a movie deal from someone else, and that part in the song "do u want him or do u want me" could have also worked for that situation. And wasn't there a rumor about her and Albert Magnoli? If true, it could have worked there too. Also, Prince is infamous for impulsively asking his girls to marry him even though he doesn't follow through. Even in the song, "She's Alway's In My Hair" he flirted with the idea in his lyrics and that was supposedly for Jill Jones. I get what you are saying that he could have said it wasn't for Susannah out of anger, but now that he's actually said it wasn't for her, throws things way off because I've seen countless articles and quotes even before that statement, that said the song was about Vanity, so now that he's actually said that, I think there is some truth to it. Good post.
Yes it could have worked 4 Vanity too. The Vanity/Magnoli thing was that if she cheated with Magnoli he also fired Vanity. I don't know/wonder if he would have tolerated Magnoli into 1990. I can't see Prince keeping him around after something like that allegedly happening.
Then of course there was the most believe reason Vanity left $$$ and Prince not raising the stakes for her. As well as the mind games she couldn't deal with. (I still marvel that she continued as friends with Susan Moonsie & Jill Jones)
I've actually never read an article where he said it was about Vanity. I don't remember him ever saying anything about Vanity after she left, except in 1998 I think when talking about 'Come' and his use of her vocals from an old recording. I'll have to scan through my stuff. I'm doing a PR era thread about the music now. I'm on the Beautiful Ones. So I'm searching stuff.
From the strongest rememberance was after the 8.1983 Dance Benefit show were he met Susannah officially he recorded the song. I believe it as Susan Rogers who talked about it, either he spoke to her about it or it was something written in connection to the recording of the song.
