If you read the story, Mayte is a vegan and a PETA supporter who helped develop the project. I've never seen Damaris or any other Prince associate/family member express support for PETA or veganism, so why should they be there? PETA is not a universal cause.

If she's a PETA supporter why would she use Prince's name?

You still couldn't be bothered to read the story, eh? I'm going to be nice and copy/paste it for you:

Prince would have turned 58 next week. To mark the occasion, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) is releasing a free download of his pro-vegan song Animal Kingdom, which he recorded for the charity nearly two decades ago.

The track– which is available to stream now via the Peta website – is a stripped-back, spacey acoustic number. His voice distorted, Prince sings the lyrics: “No member of the animal kingdom ever did a thing to me / It’s why I don’t eat red meat or white fish / Don’t give me no blue cheese / We’re all members of the animal kingdom / Leave your brothers and sisters in the sea.”

The late musician had been a long-time supporter of animal rights, and donated the song to Peta for its 20th anniversary in 1999. Mayte Garcia, Prince’s ex-wife, who is working alongside the charity, has said that they would mark his birthday every year, encouraging Prince fans to make a “veg pledge” and go vegan in support of his legacy.

“Prince didn’t want to celebrate birthdays, but to live life, to elevate and educate to the next level of enlightenment,” said Garcia. “My mission every 7 June is not only to celebrate his birth, but also with Peta to remember this man by making 7 June a day where Prince fans go vegan to see how much better they feel and to honour his kind legacy.

“Prince said ‘compassion is an action word with no boundaries’, and that’s our message with this campaign, which everyone can participate in.”

Earlier this week, an autopsy report showed Prince’s death in April was from an accidental overdose of the prescription painkiller fentanyl. The results are said to have surprised friends and family members, who said Prince avoided alcohol and drugs and maintained a healthy lifestyle.

She still doesn't have to use Prince's name especially since she hasn't had contact with him a n years

One more time. Prince. Donated. The. Song. To. PETA.

What's your goal here? To get random strangers on the Internet to trash talk a woman few of us has ever met and judge her in her grief? I think you're in the wrong place for that. In the PETA example, she is trying to make some good of a horrible situation. Period.

O.k., guys I'm not trying to be mean or anything but Mayte has been obsessively posting about Prince since he died. Mayte and Prince were married and divorced years ago. They didn't even have contact with each other for years. As a matter of fact Mayte tried to come back to Prince but he didn't want her. It's interesting how she's acting like a grieving widow

Thats what I have felt too. I alluded to this in that funeral thread that Mayte helped arranged eek Its nothing wrong with mourning an ex but her behavior is a bit overboard and inappropiate and a little bit attention seeking. She was not his widow.

Thats what I felt but I wasn't sure. I thought it was odd she arranged his funeral and she had no contact with him in years and her behavior on social media has been extreme. Was he in contact with his 2nd wife?

Ya'll should make a list of who is and who isn't allowed to grieve. I'm sure they'd appreciate it.

Not at all the same situation, but I took a long break from Prince, and his death has hit me HARD. Especially on days like today that remind me he isn't around to not celebrate another trip around the sun. I don't think it matters. Someone has a lasting impact on your life, or in Mayte's case shared an intimate bond AND family, then it's going to be rough. I don't think Prince let a lot of people really know him, so Mayte and Mani probably knew him better than almost anyone else.

And in Mayte's case, he was her first love. Come on now. That's going to be rough.

Mayte deserves to grieve as everyone else does, and she would grieve differently because he had a profound influence on her life and heart. And she seems like such a sweet lady, and she has a right to grieve just like everyone else.

Isn't the other ex posting on Facebook all the time too? And using his death to push a career or something?

They both are. I don't understand it because they are ex wives. How do they think Damaris feels? There's a reason why they weren't allowed at Prince's family memorial

FYI Damaris , has come out since his passing and has saisthey were never dating she was just his muse

I've already expressed concern for Mayte a while ago, and I really hope she pulls through this ok. No matter what she has to do to be ok.

Let her grieve however she wants to grieve. Nobody is judging anyone here at the org for posting pics, tributes, and thoughtful words on Prince when we're doing the same thing that Mayte is doing.

But Mayte was selling Prince's stuff in eBay when he died. She was also about to write a tell all book about him and for you folks saying that I don't know what happened between them: I know someone who worked for Prince for nearly 30 years. I probably know more about Prince than you do but I'm not going to tell all of his business

Do you keep your ex's things? If you do, that's a little strange, dontcha think? biggrin

Also, Prince didn't want that stuff, or he'd've gotten it back. Who bloody cares if she decided to sell it after 20 years or so.. good on her. Maybe it helped heal her up a little bit.

Ah, the "I know someone who worked for Prince!" line.... I don't really care what they be doin'. biggrin

If she's a PETA supporter why would she use Prince's name?

They were married for about two years, and an item for the better part of eight. They were inseparable back then and seemed genuinely in love. They were each other's first spouses, had their first children with each other. They both shared a passion for animal rights, so I think it's all very appropriate and fair for her to use Prince's name to promote a cause that she (and many fans) knew was important to him.

.

Regarding your OP, I don't believe Mayte is "acting" the part of a grieving widow. I think she's really in pain, nothing fake about it. It's understandable you wanting to know whether or not she is exploiting Prince, but I disagree with your perception. By all accounts, Mayte is a very sweet and kind person and for several reasons I do think she genuinely loved him. Losing two children factored in on their anullment, as can happen with married couples who experience the death of a child. A couple's separation doesn't have to mean they stop loving each other. They probably couldn't get around the range of painful emotions resulting from these personal tragedies.

No one has said she doesn't have a right to grieve just that some of her behavior seems kinda off. She can grieve but she is not his widow and she shouldn't act like she is. There is some level of respect that needs to be maintained.

I feel bad for Mayte and she seems sincere. I do think she is genuinely grieving Prince's death, but I think she is also still struggling with baggage from the relationship. By all accounts she was basically banished to another country alone to deal with the loss of their child while Prince was carrying on here with other women. In the end its been written she was tricked into a divorce and didn't get any kind of a settlement. To add insult to injury he supposedly had the marriage annulled and his name is not even recorded on their baby's birth certificate. I can't even imagine how much that would hurt and it's no wonder she is having an especially hard time. Obviously there would be some unresolved feelings on Mayte's part which is completely understandable. Under the circumstances she has been incredibly gracious concerning Prince. She was very young and naive when she became a part of his world. Prince was obviously enchanted with and loved her youth, beauty and innocence. But when the going got tough I'm sure her lack of maturity wasn't helpful. I think they both needed more than the other could give. In any case she has as much reason as anyone else to grieve and I hope she feels better soon.
It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

If you don't wish to be mean, and you feel so strongly about this, you are able to contact Mayte directly to express your views rather than discussing it further on this forum.
