Andre Cymone says his piece about Madonna's tribute-it ain't pretty From Andre:
First of all I love Madonna... Her, Prince, Michael Jackson, Sade, David Sylvian and myself, all were born in the same year, That being said I think the industry's response to THE PEOPLE, and THE FANS wanting to see maybe some musicians and artists who either worked directly with Prince and or who he may have inspired would have been appropriate.... They should listen to the people, the people have a lot to do with why artists do what they do. This hard line attitude is what's wrong with the music business and it's why the industry crumbled and people don't want to pay for the music they're puttin out there anymore. They use the same 3 or 4 artists and "The Disney artist Crew" for everything, that's pathetic. They got it fixed so artists can't make any money unless they play the game and If they don't play the game they get to watch everybody get paid but the artist. It's "How to ruin a great business 101"....silly. People, you need to stand up, If you want to support artists then get their music directly from them otherwise you're just lining the pockets of those business people making those bad business decision as opposed to creative artistic ones... Music is suffering and things need to change before it's too late. Fans and artists CAN exist outside of their bubble, that's a fact and in the end it most certainly will be their loss...but It is sad and correct me if I'm wrong, and all due respect to Madonna but I think Prince refused to perform or do interviews unless the line up of artists or journalists were gender balanced and color balanced... Next time Reach out... There are some serious musicians and artists out here making powerful music, trust me.... It would have made his tribute the talk of the industry, in a good way.... If they or whoever, actually stopped and maybe got a little creative and instead of doing business as usual, thought about who Prince really was and what he stood for, they may have come up with some really cool options including Madonna. I knew who Prince was and I think I might know a little about what HE may have wanted to see in a tribute.... Just sayin... I don't care about myself, it ain't about me, I've been working outside the system for years. It's about someone I knew very well and loved to death and I would have loved to see them get this right. He gave his all to his fans and he raised the bar high, it's unfortunate that the industry has no clue how to raise the bar, they've done a fabulous job lowering it.

Some Madonna fans I sent the video to found her performance very lame. I think André is right...they should have done a bit more. More artists who worked with him, more songs, a better planned show. I'd be willing to bet she toned down the whole thing in light of all the flack she got before she even went out there. I hope Andre is working with Tyka and Sheila for the real tribute. Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

Why the throne? Ohhh, because his name was Prince... she's so creative. Who told her to dress like a shiny Jack Sparrow though?

I couldn't care less about the tribute either way but... Loving Andre's namecheck of David Sylvian though! He and Prince have been my two favourite artists for over 30 years now. Nice to know he's loved by some in the Prince camp. I always wondered if Prince was a fan. Sylvian married Ingrid Chavez so he would have been on his radar.

Didn't see the tribute, the rehearsal was bad enough. I don't think the Billboard Awards ceremony is the best place for a real Prince band tribute anyway. The Grammys are the place for that. Madonna was not inappropriate given the history, and the fact that she is a true icon. Honestly Prince deserved a tribute from an icon and he got two last night, so...

Thanks to Andre for that, who grew up with Prince and damn sure knew him better than Madonna, but on another note, so glad he mentioned Sade. Can't forget about the one and only Sade.

There should just be a separate tribute show dedicated to Prince, that includes some family members, childhood friends/childhood musician friends, former band members, and people who became his close friends later in his life, like Larry Graham, Van Jones, Tavis Smiley, Cornel West, Stephen Hill, Tamron Hall, and more who said they spent hours on the phone, talking about everything about life from religion, politics, Black communit y concerns, the economy, environment, the state of the music industry, and so on. Still can't believe we lost one of the greatest musician and performer that blessed us with his presence, music and talent. [Edited 5/23/16 15:36pm]

Andre is exactly on point when he says that the bar for quality music has been lowered. the HAS been lowered so much, unfortunately, that I don't see how it will ever come up again. Andre made several other valid points too in his comments, but his "low music bar" remark stands out the most to me. I'll see you tonight..

the music biz has always been pretty shallow, it's just gotten worse. couple months ago, we had some kind of bigshot in to watch an open mic, i've never seen so much talent in one spot in my life. Not only talent, but everything you'd think the business would want. I saw great singer songwriters, and beautiful women with voices to put anyone to shame who's out now. Why is it like this? Why does talent get neglected? Because no one cares. You don't have to make it complicated. But Prince was a one off, he deserves a lot better than the quintessential talentless "artist" to tribute him. To me it's just another oppurtunity for a very narcissistic person to indulge herself. No one did it like prince, as good as d'angelo's performance was, it wasn't like prince, he is really the only one who could do those songs ultimate justice because his character was entwined with his songs.

Really take the time to plan it out, but maybe for his birthday next year or some other important anniversary date "Where you are now is in a place that does not require time." - Rest In Power, PRINCE

Love him. "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15
