The man can put on a show. I've seen two so far.... Two more tonight, and one more Sunday. Doing some of his own stuff, as well as James Brown and Ray Charles covers. A spur of the moment choice to sing a few lines of Rockin Robin was a funny surprise. I hope I have that kind of energy in my 70s.... Sacred is the prayer that asks 4 nothing

Five shows in three days. The last show, tonight, was the most fun. He had a British trombonist Dennis Rollins playing up until tonight. Tonight Greg Boyer was is town and played trombone and did background vocals instead..... Maceo appeared to be having a great time with Greg Boyer. The set was fairly typical most nights. Tonight had a few extras, but didnt have Dr. Funkenstein or Licking Stick which he played the other nights.
I remember most of the setlist.....
Funky Fiesta (What'd I Say tease - Maceo as Ray Charles) Off the Hook (Papa's Got a Brand New Bag and P Funk teases) Satin Doll Prisoner of Love (acapela) Make It Funky ?? Baby Knows Hello/We Love You So Gimme Some More (Catfish Collins RIP - Sleeping with My Funk) Give it Up or Turn It Loose Gimme Some More Think (about it) with "It Takes Two" tease (vocals by Martha High of the JB's) ?? (with Yankee Doodle and Down by the Riverside teases) Uptown Up Run Joe Drum Solo You Dont Know Me (Ray Charles Cover) Hey Pocky Way Bass solo Chain Gang - sung by Maceo with the Stand By Me bassline Stand By Me (Darlene Parker on vocals, Maceo on the flute) Funky Good Time (We Love You Reprise) Shake Everything You Got (Tease) Let's Get It On (We Love You Reprise again) ?? - Maceo on sax Pass the Peas/Soul Power Sing a Simple Song
The Sly and the Family Stone cover was a fun way to end the run of shows. Tonight was the one and only time he played it..... Sacred is the prayer that asks 4 nothing

Surely not the song from Prince's Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic?? I can imagine Maceo playing Pretty Man in his live set, but ...

I am not sure if you are being sarcastic or really asking..... But in case you are seriously asking.... It is Prince's Baby Knows...... And he played it every show. And that song is stuck in my brain right now. And that is a good thing.... Although I am annoying the crap out of everyone by singing "Baby Knows...." everywhere I go. Sacred is the prayer that asks 4 nothing

Wasn't being sarcastic, was genuinely asking . I find it hard to imagine Maceo doing that one, I guess it's a very different arrangement to Prince's, less rocky, more funky maybe.
Am surprised he does Baby Knows but not Pretty Man, but I guess he's got plenty of JB-style funk in the set already. Having said that, I think Baby Knows is an underrated Prince song and went down well when he did it live.
Maceo is the master of the funky sax imo. I saw him perform with Prince on the ONA tour back in '02 and I treasure the memories. I didn't know Maceo was in the band until P introduced him. Being a huge fan of classic James Brown, it nearly blew my mind to actually see the man play .
