if Jill Jones' debut album had been released earlier (say...late 1984)
what songs do you think Prince should have given her?
I have often said that if her album had been released in late '84 or early '85,she would have been able to benefit from the Purple Rain hype,in the same way that Sheila E. and Apollonia 6 did. Here are a few songs that could have appeared on her album:
***G-Spot---I think this song would have worked better in 1984.Think of Prince's version...it would have sounded just like that...raw and funky, without the horns of the 1987 version.
***Sugar Walls---This would have been a perfect first single to launch her career with.He could have given Sheena Easton another song (lol),but it's important to save the really good stuff for his own proteges.Besides,Sheena was already doing very well in her career.
***Blue Limousine---Yes,we all love the Apollonia 6 version but if push came to shove,Prince should have given this track to Jill.It could have been a strong second single from her album.
With "Sugar Walls" and "Blue Limousine" as the two singles, there is no doubt in my mind that a late 1984 Jill Jones debut album would have been a huge success. What do you guys think?

SO TRUE!!!!!! Her Album as it was is a GEM in the Paisley Park era (as well as Mazarati & The Family & BOTH Madhouse Albums)!!

I remember when her album was finally released.I was in a record store one day and I was surprised to see it! There had been no promotion at all.I hadn't heard the first single, hadn't seen the music video.I couldn't believe that her album was in stores.

Prince could have done a 1985 album for her that reflected Purple Rain but directed to the Parade era: G-Spot, Manic Monday, Wednesday, Mia Bocca, All Day All Night(Prince/Jill duet), Blue Limousine(w/Apollonia 6), Sugar Walls
She needed her own band(visible band) like the back of ROmance1600

I like Jill´s debut album a lot and wish it would´ve been released earlier, so she could´ve benefitted from the Purple Rain era and all its connected albums. Jill could have become very successful and famous. Too bad that Prince focused more on the other acts and neglected her album for far too long.

Yeah, I like it, but it was placed in the wrong era. After the Revolution break things just went loose. No more real protege focus. Even Madhouse couldn't really be expressed correctly because everyone in Madhouse was in the SOTT band. They did some cool videos, the movie Prince shot based on Madhouse could have been better and a cool outlet. And we also lost Sheila E and that wonderful 3rd album of hers. Yes I loved her as drummer too, but other things suffered. And She was on the edge of taking her Paisley career to the next level. . Jill Jones outside of the Hard KNock Life movie wasn't even visible in the Prince camp.
. Even some kind of mini album and back up band 4 Jill for the PR era and the Parade era . Purple Rain Jill G-Spot Sugar Walls Wednesday(What Will I Do?) Manic Monday Lust U Always (Prince/Jill duet) . Parade Jill Mia Bocca Manic Monday Violet Blues 4 Love ___ Prince/Jill duet

I agree. She had been in the Prince camp since 1982 but had to wait many years to get her own album released. She missed out on that Purple Rain hype that would have helped her establish a name for herself.I hate to say this, but when her album was finally released in 1987,it was met with indiffence by the general public. In pop music, timing is everything.

True, people definately took notice of her vocal talent, but she didn't benefit from the timing. Personally I think she should have been on the SOTT line up too. Sheila E Jill Jones & Cat, a triple threat sexiness for Prince to play with. Get rid of of one of the guy dancers and put Jill(strong vocals) Wally or Gregory and Cat(stronger dancer). But if Jerome stayed around: Jill Jones Jerome B and Cat that would have been a fun group. A BrownMark like Prince wanted.

In 1987,I was hearing that she was going to be the opening act on Prince's SOTT tour, but it didn't happen. That would have been great exposure for her.

I agree, he connection to SOTT would have been very helpful. I don't know how well Madhouse opening 4 the show went especially since everyone except the drummer was in the SOTT band

btw..has anyone here ever heard "Wednesday"?? We hear alot about that song, but I don't think it has ever leaked, has it?

Yes, there is like a 1.50min piece 'What Will I Do...' is the line that is heard easily, a piano pieces Prince is singing in a falsetto

while the Vanity 6 outtake "Vibrator" would have been a little too outrageous for Jill to record (lol),maybe the music could have been used to create another song for Jill? I like the groove.

I think most people wud agree that her album should have been released in 1984/5 like the Apollonia 6 album because her profile would have been higher. Why wasn't 77 Bleeker Street on her album? It was on the b side of Mia Bocca but it was too good to just be a b side. It is my favourite song of Jill's, really strong melody.
