Let's hear it 4 Larry! I know there's a lotta folks here who don't like Larry Graham, but seriously... listen to his albums... They've got all of black musical history from doo-wop 2 soul 2 deeeep fonk. How can anyone listen to Larry's LP's and NOT realise Prince learned everything from him? Even more than from Sly?
Listen to Ain't-No-Bout-a-Doubt-It or Now Do-U Wanta Dance and U'll know there ain't NUTHIN' that Prince did that Larry ain't done before! [Edited 5/27/13 12:40pm]

Amen!
I'm going to Larry's concert tonight at the Dakota and I'm suuuuper excited to see him again! The last time I saw him, he gave me tickets to his show at the MN Zoo and it was phenomenal! What is your main problem?
To whom it may concern: I love you! Humankind..be both.

Wrong this isn't "Prince & His Music" -- move this about Larry Graham to the "Associated artists forum". Prince 4Ever.

^ Dance, that's exactly why I put it here. Of course Larry belongs in the "associated" forum, but that's why I put it here! Prince/Sly/Larry... They all belong 2 the same family!

So you 'hate' a man you don't know, because he is part of one of your favorite artist's history? A favorite artist who you don't know personally and never met? That just seems so reaching and ridiculous and beyond fandom. Larry has a history with Sly & the Family Stone, Betty Mabry-Davis, and other musicians/artists from back in the day of great funk/soul/r&b music. I don't know why some fans keep blaming him for another grown man's choice.

So, do you hate the fact that Prince was quite influenced by the legacy of black music and that Graham is a part of the legacy so by working with Graham Prince paying homage to and engaging in the study, celebration, and perpetuation of that legacy of black music? Because along with Graham's mentoring of Prince in his engagement of religion, Graham, along with others, is the reason that Prince makes music. If there were no Larry Graham, there would be no Prince, at least not in how he made music during the Eighties, which is ironic since you always claim that Prince's Eighties work is his best work. So, in fact, to hate Larry Graham is to hate what you consider Prince's best work. So, that says what?

Ain't nothing wrong with Larry, I just don't prefer his voice as a lead vocal. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Methinks Associated Artists...
How does adding the name "Prince" to a topic or in the initial post automatically make a post relevant.

True, and that was some darn good music my friend. I mean how can anyone not like 'Hot fun in the Summertime,' 'Dance to the Music', 'Stand', 'Family Affair', 'One in a Million', and then some? Matter of fact, I just heard 'Dance to the Music' in a store in a mall in NYC on Sunday afternoon, and just hearing that song, brought back memories. [Edited 5/27/13 19:16pm]

The role of Larry in Prince's career is open to debate. I also dislike Prince's live versions of his music. But, in my opinion, the religious conversion of Prince, first, is something I deeply respect in personal terms, and second, it brought about Prince's best album in two decades, The Rainbow Children. If you knew your Prince history, you would have also known that Prince's mother was a JW. There was an old article posted here sometime ago that stated that his mother wanted him to become a JW before she passed, so that could very much be why he made that personal choice. Only one who knows is Prince, and probably those who shared a personal relationship/friendship with him. We're fans, who can only 'speculate' but as fans, we're not his personal friend. There was also an interview where Prince said when he met Larry, he was interested in having discussions with Larry, about the JW religion, and that he convinced Larry to move to Minnesota, in which Larry did. So it's not like Prince wasn't aware of the beliefs of JWs, and some of that is based on what he shared in that interview about meeting up with Larry to discuss JW beliefs.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't force the horse to drink the water. That's why there is this thing called 'choice', and apparently it was Prince's choice to become a JW. You can't keep blaming someone else for a choice another made for themself. I can't understand why some fans can't accept that Prince apparently made that personal choice for himself, and maybe some fans should stop blaming Larry for it.
1725Stopp is right. Your hatred for Sly & the Family Stone's music pretty much conflicts with your claim, that some of Prince's best music was from the 80s, when Sly & the Family Stone's music, was pretty much an inspiration to Prince's s music of the 80s. Prince has stated that Sly's music was one of his influences. You can hear Sly's sound in many of Prince's r&b/funk-soul flavored tracks, whether you like it or not. [Edited 5/28/13 6:45am]

Yeah but don't you often claim that Prince is a 'control freak', but now you're saying he's a 'puppet?' You can't be a control freak and a puppet(follower) at the same time. It's either or.

Do you hate Prince's versions of the songs, or do you truly dislike the songs?

I like and respect Larry as a bassist and member of Sly, but I don't care for his voice and I don't care for his bible thumping either. He seems like a decent guy though.

I can understand that someone prefers to hear Prince songs at a Prince concert. And he's been playing with Larry for so long now that, yes, hearing them play The Jam again is getting predictable, especially since Larry still tours with his own band. And as for the JW conversion, I'm sure Larry had an influence, but that was only because Prince was willing to listen. So in that respect I agree with2elijah.

I also think some fans forget that the same people are not at every concert, when Prince and Larry perform a song together, and that they are not performing for one particular fan, but for many. Fans bringing a personal setlist to a musician's/artist's concert is not part of the ticket price. 'spelling edit' [Edited 5/28/13 9:35am]

Wrong again. Prince's Mother was a 7th Day Adventist and that has been very well documented. Although there is common ancestry between those two faiths they are not the same. "Thinking like the Keys on Prince's piano, we'll be just fine"

I can't complain about his musicianship, but good God I can't stand to listen to his singing voice. The first time I heard the remade version of the Cross on some awards show and Larry was singing on it I could have Was glad when he got on statge at the Paisley Park show in 2009, perfect for a bathroom break. When I saw him at the 2nd show at the soundboard at Myth Saturday night, I started praying Prince wouldn't call him on stage. TRUE BLUE

I'm aware both are different, as I have family members who are 7th Day Adventists and I studied the JW religion when I was 11 years old, and attended Kingdom Hall. I was never baptised as one, as I did not commit to its beliefs. By the way, this isn't the first time orger 'thedance' expressed the same towards Larry Graham.
