Not Your Average Prince Protégé

Listening to the newest Peach and Black podcast, I heard some pretty good points about Andy Allo. She may not be the best singer(better than Mayté and that guy on disc one of Lotus Flower, maybe not as good as Tamar), but she was a recording artist before the days of Prince. She's doing shows to promote her album, and doing little things on Facebook to engage her fanbase.

What I'm trying to say is that she's trying to promote sales of her album. She isn't just sitting by hoping her CD sells just because Prince had his hand in creating it. Some of the songs on Superconducter sound very much like something Prince would've/should've put on an album of his own, but her music is better than what was on Child of the Sun and Elixer.

Does anyone else here appreciate Superconducter more than albums released/produced for other protégés?

It's of a better quality than his other recent protégés. Probably because she was a musician before hooking up with Prince. It also seems like the songs he wrote were from his private stash because his work with the others wasn't this good.

I think her work prior to Prince suits her voice much more than "People Pleaser." She has a lot of talent, find songs to fit her voice.

I think she's just having fun with this album. Yeah, her voice isn't as powerful as one should be for "People Pleaser" but the songs are good to listen to. I find more songs on this album better to listen to than Prince's "2010" CD or "3121".

Ordered her CD. I'll give it a try.

Listen to Amazon's samples of her Unfresh CD. It's alot more laid back than Superconducter. I liked this album before she was in Prince's camp.

Oh, thanks for the suggestion. I'm a bit familiar with her sound before Prince, but I'll take another listen....couldn't hurt.

miss andy allo is not a funk artist and doesnt not know how 2 manifest the fuck she is more of a acoustic louge type gal. there is not a thing wrong with that but she appeals 2 the softer side of prince not his funky side.she can do something like crazy u not people pleaser.

prince never labeled or cloned her he just gave her a stage 2 shine just like he doing with shelby ,hannah, elisa and all the others he bring 2 his stage.

Superconductor is a pretty good album. It's been in my CD player since it arrived two weeks ago. Lots of horns and the singing is better than I expected.

Can't afford her album, but radio 6 (Holland) plays People Pleaser at least once a day.

I like the song and I really like Andy.

She seems to be a self starter and work the opportunities Prince provides for her.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

She's totally working the moment. Elixer is much better, but Neither Bria or Andy can really sing. It's not like either one of them is a Taja Seville or Jill Jones, or even Sheila E. Andy Allo isn't horrible by any means, but 99.5% of us only know who she is due to her involvement with Prince. Like I've said a billion times before, after she has moved her 4,500 copies, she will go to the back of the kitchen with the Toaster Oven, Waffle Iron, Bria, Mayte, Tamar, etc. I actually like the Tamar album, but was pulling my two hairs, and the rest of my scalp out when he wasted all that time touring with her, and the album didn't even come out. I only heard it due to getting the Eye Records release that had it, but I don't actually listen to it more than once a year.

If Prince had just stuck with Sheila, Taja, and Jill, and maybe even merged the three of them in the Family, it might have kept him busy without having to juggle so many projects.

The bottom line: Unless Andy somehow sells over 50,000, she is only relevant to a few here, and just a flavor of the month, who will be gone before you can whisper "Misty Copeland."

I just bought the "Superconductor" via Itunes,

IMO the tracks aren't all excellent

The whole album is soft and melodious, though I didn't expect an album as kind of ecclectic, I would have thought of an album with the same vibe rythm and mood of "People pleaser", "When stars collide" all the length, fast funk and pop; nevertheless

I am positively surprised by

The story of you and I

Long Gone

Calm ( makes me think of Dinner with Delores)

Otherwise, maybe I need to get used to all the album to be able to like all the tracks..

I guess that Andy Allo will improve throughout the years

Superconductor is a great album. MUCH better than most side projects. She has talent in her own right but Prince's production is superb. I am hoping it get's recognized outside of us hardcores.

Have you seen the "Bambi" video with the girl that really plays guitar? The clock is already ticking on this one.

I was very hesitant to buy the album and I finally did ~2 weeks ago. It's actually good! I have "when stars collide" and "yellow gold" in frequent rotation. "If I was king" and "superconductor" and pretty good too.

Yes, Superconductor is an awesome album. Point blank.

My favorite tracks are 'If I Was King';love the funk/new orleans jazz beat of that track, and you can hear parts of Prince's track 'Pfunk' in it, and near the end with the horns, a taste of Dizzy Gillespie's 'Salt Peanuts' bebop song.

'Stars Collide', what can I say, I absolutely love this track. It takes you on a mind trip. It has a nice/smooth lay-back-in-your-car-while-driving-along-the highway-during-any-season-on-a-nice-day, and just taking it all in. I like the 70s/80s' type vibe of 'Superconductor', it's a fun and energetic track. Superconductor is a winner, and Prince and Andy did a great job working on this cd, and there isn't a song on that cd that I don't enjoy.

I haven't heard Andy's album, but I really dig what you're saying about her. I'll make it a point to check out her work.
