p 48 chapter 4 Pawns Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince

The hostilities burst to the surface during the last show of the tour at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. During their opening set, the Time found themselves being pelted by eggs from offstage. Gradually, they realized that Prince and some of his band members were the culprits. The barrage increased, and, toward the end of the set, Prince and his accomplices abducted Jerome Benton, a dancer for the group, from the stage and poured honey all over him. They they pelted hims with garbage. "They tarred and feathered him, basically," recalled Fink, who did not participate and insisted to the Time members that he wanted no part of the battle.

Then, as the Time's set ended, Chick Huntsberry grabbed Jesse Johnson and hauled him to Prince's dressing room. There, Huntsberry handcuffed Johnson to a horizontal coat rack bolted into a brick wall. Prince came in and began taunting Johnson and tossing Doritos chips and other pieces of food at him."This is what you get for talking about my mama!" Prince shouted.

The various members of Prince's band and crew in the room looked on with horror as the episode continued. "It was a cruel thing to do,"observed Bennett. Fink recalled, "I just sat there and said to myself, this is getting out of hand."

Humiliated and frightened, Johnson writhed in his cuffs. Finally, to the amazement of the onlookers, he managed to rip the entire twelve-foot-long coat rack out of the wall. His hands were still cuffed to the rack, which he began swinging wildly. "Jesse was uncontrollable," Fink said. "He just lost it. Chick had to contain the situation before someone got hurt."

Yeah, I already knew about the scenario about P having Jesse locked to a rail on tour, etc. I knew Jesse had once stayed with Terry Lewis when he first joined The Time but I had never heard of Jesse actually living at P's crib at any time. Him offering it to Lisa when she first joined his own band, yeah, I see that but I don't see him offering that to Jesse. Even in the beginning.

I don't know about Jesse, Lisa was living with Prince for a few years

I don't know when because at the time Jesse joined theTime Lisa was living with Prince

Yep, that's what I'm saying. Understand, I'm not saying Jesse living with P isn't true and I'm certainly not saying anyone is lying. I'm just saying that I had never heard of that and just have a hard time seeing P even offering that to Jesse. Honestly, the only dude outside of Andre Cymone that I see P offering that to would be Dez. Just my opinion...

As far as Sinead, I DO think her and P had words. Especially the part when she said during the confrontation she used cursed words and P told her to stop swearing in his house and she basically told him to fuck off. I can see P getting heated frm that but I don't believe P put his hands on her though.

Jesse's last interview he gave on the radio just before he quit "The Original 7ven" & joined D'angelo's band. He went into great detail how he lived with Prince. How he could never understand how Prince always kept his hair together. He would wake up & Prince's hair would always be in place. It baffled him.... giggle

nod I totally agree.Prince had all these talented people around him but he didn't even realize their potential.Imagine if Prince had hired Jam and Lewis to be in-house producers for Paisley Park Records....it could have been the Motown of the 80s!

Definately, the Minneapolis Sound/Purple Music would have been founded evolved and just as big as Motown

these are people back then that played that music right, what we heard on the albums they were all able to duplicate live

So there would be no worries of someone changing the sound for the worse

Jill Jones might have had her 1999/PR era album and her Parade era album, JJ & Terry along with other could have helped Prince record and produce and put out a lot of that music like the Flesh sessions

Jam and Lewis could have been one of the production teams at Paisley Park.

Andre Cymone and BrownMark could have been the other production team at Paisley Park.

and then you got Prince, also writing and producing.Major hit records!

The results would have been fantastic!

I can dig it...That's cool Jesse spoke of that and certainly something I did not know. To Jesse's credit, I definately don't see him making some shit up like that on the air when he knows all the while that P could easily call him out about it. That's some wicked shit about P always having his hair together 24/7 which is odd in a way because I've seen P in person during the early 80's, late 80 and 81 and P would get to sweating and his hair would "go back" as us black folks say. P's hair would be looking kinda fucked up. This was before the 2nd half of the Controversy tour when he had a few pieces added in the front to always cover that one eye which was a totally different texture (deep wave/curly) that his own natural and more coarse texture which was the part that would always "go back" and rough up whenever he sweated. He took care of that totally by 1999 and definately by Purple Rain by adding pieces damn near all over his head. That's old school show biz just to make sure his hair was always the same way ALL THE TIME.

nod Jill Jones might have gotten songs like "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" and "Still A Thrill"...hit songs that would have turned her into a superstar.

One of the problems with Paisley Park Records is that Prince was spreading himself too thin.He had some truly talented people in his camp but he refused to utilize their real talents.

Agreed. nod This, IMO was (and is) Prince's biggest fault. He could have built a legendary record label but didn't because he had to have things his "way or the highway."

I know a girl who's brother used to do P's hair in 81-82 and he said that he definately used to add pieces to P's own hair during that time. Not because P didn't have any hair or that he needed it but simply because P liked the way it looked with added hair blended in. It was more managable especially on tour. Certainly no slight or a knock against P. Again this is old Hollywood stuff from the 30's, etc. It's show biz and a lot of known artists did and does it. P isn't excluded from that. But it's certainly not "putting him down". P didn't try to hide it, that's for sure so he himself wasn't too worried about it. lol

Prince would never hit a woman. He adores them too much..The Kid was a character in "Purple Rain".That is not him in real life...

In the early 80's, shortly after I started listening to Prince, I was profoundly struck by his reverence for women. I had read the 1991 Rolling Stone article at the time of its issue and at the time noted the allegation of threats was so out of character for Prince. In the span of his 35-year career, I've not read of any similar incidence with a woman. Sinead's allegation of Prince's threatening behavior does not gibe with what I've read about his personal and professional relationships with females. To the contrary, past interviews with Mayte, Denise Matthews (aka Vanity), and Sheila E. revealed they all still harbored some of desire to rekindle the flame with Prince, several years after their romantic relationships had ended with him.

I knew of Sinead O'Conner in the 80's before I had heard her music--she had a reputation for sparking conflict: Frank Sinatra wanted to punch her; another article reported a bodyguard at a club did hit her. I would never condone any man hitting or threatening a woman (unless in self defense); however, what little I know of Sinead, is that she seems to have a very confrontational personality that is known for eliciting hostile reactions from others. I'm not justifying those reactions, but I did take this information into account as I tried to assess what happened in L.A. that night, and come to terms with how I felt about it. How I felt about Prince, in particular.

I suspect there's some truth to her account but I did, and still do think she has purposely left out part of the story--what led up to this incident--that might give us a more accurate understanding of what occurred.

What happened between Sinead and Prince was regrettable. I may never know who was telling the truth and who wasn't. What I did know was that her account of this "violent clash" was--and still is--very out of character for Prince in terms of his relationships with women, but fell in with a pattern of conflict in Sinead's interactions with men. Based on this reasoning, I was--and still am--inclined to give Prince the benefit of the doubt. But by all means, both should feel free to speak their personal truth about the matter as long as they do so honestly and ethically.

Prince did not have hair pieces put in his hair. Stop spreading false rumors about him!! Geez!! eye swear U people love playing down Prince's swag & style. Its getting old & uncalled 4..

so,THIS is all of Prince's real hair? hmmm falloff

Yes, our hairdressers knew Prince's stylist then personally from the salon I worked in. Jill Jone's uncle. At THAT time he was getting his hair set in rollers and it would leave his hair full and bouncy. It was all HIS natural hair... all of it. Olive Lee Benson our boss saw to it we had all our clients looking just as fly in our place too.

Jill Jone's uncle was badass! AND FYI fake hair didn't move back then, Prince was whipping his hair back and forth a LOT during that era.

lol

FYI Angela Basset wore a weave/wiglet for her movie role in Waiting to exhale when she got it cut short... she never cut her hair IRL. She always kept it long then.

Black folks can grow their natural hair long and full... or wear weaves to a make it look short.

biggrin
