Larry Graham is the musical guest on letterman Show (Monday Oct. 8, 2012) Maybe Prince might jam with Larry and his band at an afterhours spot like in 2010 when Prince jammed with LG at BB King's club. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

It is beyond sad that a grown woman wrote this on her Facebook page:

What's the big deal about what Shelby J wrote? She's only promoting the appearance of a close musical associate and the possibibility that Prince may perform or appear with Larry Graham. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Bart, do you follow Shelby J on facebook?...just curious...
However, I think her post is acceptable "internet lingo" especially if you want to identify yourself as being "hip" in which she probably has more hip or younger followers than you think (you are probably in the minority-assumption made.) I have heard her interview in person and she was very well spoken. Although, I don't know the point you were trying to make, so I could be way off base here.
Also, (shamefully)...I don't know ANYTHING about Wendy and/or Lisa before/beyond "Purple Rain", so I'm not sure why you compared Shelby to those two.
Prince would be better off if he had associates like Wendy and/or Lisa rather than Shelby J because_________________________?

No, it isn't. Random capitalization, numerous spelling errors, idiotic hearts,... This is a grown-ass woman talking about the new CD of a 66 year old man (a new CD which by the way once again includes several covers of his old songs). She isn't a frikking fourteen year old talking about Justin Bieber. © Bart Van Hemelen

Hahaha...too funny! I just enjoy the music (or not)....that's all.
As long as Prince is happy with his life (associates), that's all that matters...right?
Thanks | |

Take into consideration that you're posting on PRINCE.ORG about her FB post. A site that is rife with emoticons, gifs and random capitaliztions all perpetrated by adults talking about people they haven't shared a stage with much less know. Shelby knows Larry and her post is that of a friend promoting a friend. What's the random orgers excuse for the same behaviors? When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

For those who didn't watch or couldn't, Larry was only playing/singing with the house band and then backed by his own band for the intros/outros between segments. Letterman mentioned and showed the new CD. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I just tried to watch this online and couldn't sit through Letterman. He annoys the hell out of me.

Hey Shelby! Be honored that this guy consumes his time following you on facebook, and not the other way around

Larry was the one who hooked Shelby up with Prince, so she's pretty much obligated to gush over anything he puts out. Really the entire NPG come off as azz-kissing jackasses on social media. I guess on-line promotion is part of their job now, since Prince seems to think he is above it. It's funny how they never are so confident in a project to promote it on this site. I guess they know if it's soft, we are going to cut it to pieces.

Well THAT was boring... After hints of special surprises, to only see Larry sitting in with the house band....
LAWD.
...and I can't stand Letterman, both personally and because of how he's referred to Prince in the past.
I really didn't think P would show up on his show, but foolishly watched anyway.
The animals were cool though.

What do you mean obligated? Are you saying that she's being forced to write what she did? and how do you know she's ass kissing. I see it among many of indie musicians that I know, they promote each other's work and I'm sure she respects Larry enough to do so. I don't see how that is unusual. Is she supposed to go on facebook and bash it? Maybe I'm not following you. [Edited 10/9/12 10:03am]

I don't see the problem of her promoting familiar or new musicians/artists on her own FB page. ShelbyJ used to be part of Larry Graham's band before becoming part of NPG, so of course it's not surprising she would promote a friend/a musician she's familiar with and was part of his band at one time. Secondly, it's her fb page, so she should be able to post what she pleases and how she chooses. Thirdly, it's not like any of the band members are obligated to promote anything on this particular site when there are so many other sites they can promote musician friends/artists on.

Good god! [Snip - luv4u] The woman is promoting an album that will, most likely, go unnoticed. Seriously, who gives a flying fuck what she posts on Facebook? She's a damn good singer...that's all I care about. Occupy Alphabet Street!

Prince and Larry Graham are incredible musicians. But neither of these cats are doing anything cool anymore. They think like busted old men and they write boring songs like busted old men. So when I hear their younger employee GUSHING all over a fairly lame cd, I can't help but to suspect that employee's praise in disingenuous. And ultimately it hurts the final product, because Prince seems to take their false praise as affirmation that he's on the right track.
I know they don't HAVE to come to this site to announce things, but still I'm pretty sure they are also AFRAID of the criticism. [Edited 10/9/12 20:01pm]

I agree they're both incredible musicians, but as far as ShelbyJ, she used to be in LG's band, so there is nothing wrong with her promoting a friend or fellow musician's music, on her own FB page.
Also, since none of us are behind closed doors to hear the critique from Prince's band members regarding music they collaborate with him on, all we're left to do is speculate and draw conclusions, by looking in from the outside.
I have favorite musicians'/artists' music, that I listen to, but there are times, when I don't like every song, so what I don't like-no matter how much respect I have for a favorite artist-I just don't listen to it, and will move on to the next.
About criticism, I don't think it's a matter of any of the band members fearing criticism from fans on this site, as if such was the case, they would have packed up a long time ago and quit. I believe musicians/artists know that criticism of their work, comes with the package. I'm not talking about bashing--which I consider a form of abuse in disguise, I'm mainly talking about constructive criticism, positive/negative, that an artist can use to their advantage. I think if one allows the fear of criticism to own them in a negative way, then they can't move forward, but learning how to master constructive criticism and use it to one's advantage, can aid in rising above various, levels of criticism.

Your statement probably echoes a lot of orgers sentiments regarding the NPG members but also brings up the question of "Why do you follow/check up on the FB postings of someone you think is a mindless sycophant?" They're doing what they choose to do on their FB page but you ultimately have the decision not to follow it. Everytime someone hooks up with Prince's band their FB likes shoot up because orgers run to their FB pages. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I'm not so sure that they are using criticism to their advantage. I think they are only hardening toward it. It's clear to me that they lurk on Prince.org, as they should because this is the only site really discussing their work. But it's strange they aren't openly posting. FDeluxe and O7ven communicated directly with the fanbase here. Prince and The NPG clearly hide in the shadows. I am positive it's because they know we don't like much of what they do. I think even they aren't turned on by much of what Prince puts out, but can't admit it because they work for him, hence the gushing posts and false praise from Shelby and others.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I don't think its unusual for people who work for Prince to not post here. This is generally a hostile place, Prince-wise, but an ass kissing place for associated artists like FDeluxe, O7 and especially Wendy and Lisa. the same way you feel about Prince andLarry' s music is how I feel about most of the associated artists music, yet whenever I'm honest about it, people have an issue. I could see why they feel more comfortable posting here.

This site is hardly the litmus test for good music. Most criticisms on here regarding Prince's music come off as bashing and really offer no significant viewpoint. There are some rare exceptions from orgers who actually have a valid opinoon and not some axe to grind. Wading throught the often toxic posts on here has turned off non musicians so I could imagine artists not being inclined to jump in here so readily. fDeluxe are taking a very different approach to reestablishing their career/fanbase but they can do that without it turning into a freakfest. If Prince posted here the servers would overload with equal amounts of fanaticism and venom.
If you truly feel that the NPG are that disingenous then why do you follow them at all? When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I agree that if you're not interested in a musician/artist, then why bother frequenting the FB pages of their band members? Makes no sense. Different strokes for different folks of course, but I just could never see the sense in someone frequenting an artist's fansite or social media site, that they're not interested in. Guess that's a question/curiosity that will always be up in the air or in wonderment, if the latter is such a term, among fans.
Also, I'm sure many of Prince's band members have fans outside of members of the Org. I guess it is not unusual though, that fans of a well-known artist would frequent social media sites of band members for current/future info regarding their artist of interest. [Edited 10/10/12 11:00am]

You both make good point and I can't say I'm in disagreement with any of what you said really. Except that, it's kind of obvious that Prince frequents the site. It's just rather strange, that they don't post info here in an official capacity. My guess is that they know the projects can't hold up to a knowledgeable evaluation by die-hard Orgers. Had to change my response, to relate more to your post. As far as some of Prince's band members not using this site to post official announcements, well most of the time, fans frequent those band members' FB/Twitter pages to obtain concert announcements, etc., and post it here, so no point in the band members coming here to post it. Not to mention, Drfunkenberry is considered an official source of information for Prince and Prince associates' news/announcements, and some Prince fans go there as well, to obtain that info, then post it here. Let's face it though, FB and Twitter are more popular than this site, and are faster forms of communication in getting Prince news out, while having the capability to reach an international, much larger fan base, moreso than the Org, and I doubt a major portion of Prince's fan base even know the Org exists. Besides with FB, you don't have to put up with unecessary bashing/derogatory comments, because you get to control the flow and direction of your page, and don't have to wait for a moderator to come along and remove ugly and unflattering comments. Like mentioned before, about musicians/artists, it would be unrealistic, if they are not aware that in their type of career, that criticism is part of the package. How they personally choose to handle it, is up to the individual artist. As far as communication directly with unofficial fan community sites, there was a time though, when staff from Prince's team shared official concert announcement/news with the moderators of various, unofficial Prince fan sites, as well as info on contests for fans to win free tix to shows, presales, etc., but I think the last time that happened was back in late 2009-2010, if I'm not mistaken, but apparently doesn't seem to be the case anymore, but there was an attempt at some time or another of his camp reaching out in that way, to unofficial fan communities. Anyway, I don't know how this thread turned from LG being on Letterman to discussing what and where some of Prince's band members choose to post info. Back on topic I guess.
