Maceo at Basingstoke

Great show from the old geezer! It had a similar feel to the ONA soundchecks, with the band jokin around and with there only being a few hundred people in audience.
I hadnt read any other reviews before going to the gig so it was a nice surprise to see Greg Boyer and Morris Hayes (along with his NPG jewellery) there too.
The show included quite a few songs off the new "made by maceo" album but also some oldies and familiar toons.
They played "baby knows" (although this was only really the turnaround riff and the chants by the backing vocals) and Corey Parker (his son) rapped a version of "prettyman". They also did some other oldies like "georgia on my mind" (which Maceo did a reasonably good impression of Ray Charles with shades), "quiet storm" (luther vandross) and "stand by me" (ben e king).
I was surprised at how good Maceo's voice is and also at how good his dancing is for an old blokey!
From reading the other reviews, it seems they stick to a similar format with the "2% jazz, 98% funk" and "happy birthday" ditty being in every show along with the usual walkaround the crowd playing etc.

Anyway, all in all a great gig, marred only by a big fight some guys in the audience...which nearly stopped the band but not quite! so much for maceo stating at the start of the show how important peace and love is!

I was a few rows behind this fight - the band played on unfazed - guess they've seen a few of these over the years!

It was also great of Maceo to sign afterwards - I bought my CD, got it signed and shook hands with the legend!

Highlight of the evening for me was the "Quiet Storm" which was absolutely superb. As you mentioned, "Baby Knows" was a very different version to Prince and Maceo's "Dial..." album. Still cool to hear it though.

Overall, a damn fine concert from a funk legend and a tight band. Much respect.

P.S. - if Prince wants to perform in my home town, I'd love to see him here!
Everybody is special. Everybody. Everybody is a hero, a lover, a fool, a villain. Everybody. Everybody has their story to tell.
