Funny, just like somebody else said, my exact quote somewhere else was Jesse is just being Jesse. The album was out a few months when Jesse quit, and it seems like there was no real commitment to tour from Jam & Lewis. They easily could've toured with Torri Ruffin, who knows all the old songs, and could easily learn the new ones.

What makes things more disturbing, is for the few shows they did, they were following the tired Prince Las Vegas Medley trend of shortening songs, and largely ignoring new material. I don't think they could get away with playing more than 6 songs from the new album, but only playing 2? They also were playing about an hour and 15 minutes, which is way too short a show. No, they shouldn't play for 3 hours like Elton John, but is an hour and 45 minutes too much to ask?

Perhaps Jesse did not like the direction the band was going, and not booking shows had to make Jesse feel like it was a waste of time. Jesse mentioned that everything was done at their own expense, and that over a year into the project, they had no gigs.

In the July 2012 issue of Ebony, there is an article about the O7. It has comments from Jimmy Jam, Jesse Johnson, Morris Day, Monte Moir, & Terry Lewis.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

As Prince sang on DMSR "It's time to fix your clock"

The Original 7ven / THE TIME (if you're nasty) are finished as a recording or live performance act. They as a group have and never will be able to get out from under Prince's shadow.

Their moment to comeback big was Pandemonium. Jam & Lewis were still kicking it as producers and their sound was dug by the new younger audience. Condensate as cool as it is ain't being picked up by the kids listening to Frank Ocean, Kanye West et al.

Morris Day is old school and should be in a home with Oran 'Juice' Jones and company, kicking back sharing stories about their old pimping days. Not touring with Half Time sleepwalking his way through Jungle Love. Yes Morris, America had heard of a sexy new dance called The Bird. Quite a bit actually Morris, in fact a little too much Morris. Kinda like that episode of Family Guy... Can you see where I'm going with this Morris?

Don't get me wrong. I loved THE TIME. I've got the albums and watched them live (at their peak) to prove it. What's happening or not happening now is killing the legacy. Jesse (putting his artist wanting to be a star ego / bs to one side) was right to jump ship. At least D'Angelo is pushing the envelope creatively.

1990 would have been cool. 5 years after Ice Cream Castles and memories of Fishnet fresher still. Plus Jesse's solo work and Jam / Lewis / Jellybean / Monte production work. 1990 was prime for THE TIME but the Prince connection killed it.

Dr Frankenstien did create a monster. Sadly one that could never breath on it's own.

RIP THE TIME and thanks for the memories

I still have hope for these guys to create more good music. Not ready to forget about them yet. Too much talent up in there.

nod I think 'Condensate' is even better than the two Time albums that came before it...proving that the guys still have a few more tricks up their sleeves.

No doubt and I'm not disputing how good Condensate is... I'm saying their time has passed. The music world and audience tastes have changed since the days of Pandemonium.

For Condensate to have stood a better chance of being a success they should have gone with a more high profile label / management. Am surprised with Jam and Lewis given their skills and experience. Was all a bit DIY - even the Trendin video was shot on a shoestring budget. Compare it to Jerk Out promo directed by Julien Temple...plain to see there was more dollar behind them then. But Jesse flipped then as now so it didn't happen.

Say what you want but I think the way THE TIME came to be destined them this path (as a group) - being created by Prince and all that came with it then and now has brought them to this point.

It's basically a background history of the group and problems with Prince, but Jesse gives his reason for leaving after Condensate. There were a lot of things that came to light. There were a lot of business questions that went unanswered. I had to decide if I wanted to be part of this."

While they had their issues with Prince over creativity/input they could definitely use someone with an ironfist like him to run things now.

The O7 want too much money. Why would you book them when you can get Morris Day & The Time for 1/3 of the price?
Both them and fDeluxe need a booking agent badly. From fDeluxe's Facebook posts it is apparent they've been trying to get one without much luck.

How many Old School artists and bands are enjoying alot of success these days? When was the last time Earth,Wind and Fire,The Bar Kays,Cameo or Midnight Star sold alot of records with new material? Hell, even Prince's new albums don't sell. You say that "their time has passed" but as a huge fan of Old School funk and R&B,I respectfully disagree. There is an audience out there for this type of music, even if it's not the huge audience that they had in the 80s.Funk will live forever,it's just not as "mainstream" as it once was.The only people who sell alot of records these days are young rappers like Drake and young singers like Adele.Even Prince is considered old-fashioned by the young people of today.

The difference between fdeluxe and the O7 is that fDeluxe are doing shows and promoting Gaslight. They're also doing videos and remixes. The death of Susannah's & Wendy's dad and Paul's mother in law slowed them for a minute but they're back at it.

Well, FDeluxe doesn't have an alternate group and The Family were never really popular in the first place. The average person probably doesn't know the difference between The Original 7ven and Morris Day & The Time. Morris & The Time have been touring for years playing on old school package concerts. It's not like The Police, The Eagles, or Van Halen/David Lee Roth getting back together after being inactive for many years.

Exactly. And let's be honest....it's easy for the FDeluxe guys to tour because the group is their main project right now. It's different with the Original 7.The various members have other commitments and obligations.Jam and Lewis are still very much in-demand,as producers.

There are a thousand and one reasons why they can't get it together as a group to tour and the biggest one is they don't want to. Nobody is asking them to do a show a night for the next 12 months but even a small club tour with scattered dates would've been well recieved. None of them are so in demand fior production by any artists that they can't manage a date here or there. Also you're forgetting that when both Gaslight and Condensate dropped that Jellybean was playing in 3 bands at the time and handling the juggling just fine. None of the other members was doing half as much to keep them away from promotion.

I agree about The Time. For the average joe as long as they play The Bird & Jungle Love they are happy. As for fDeluxe being those guys main project it looks more like a labour of love to me. And on your statement regarding Jam & Lewis b ring very much in demand as producers that's a definite exaggeration! They still get work but they are far too musical for today's Urban acts!

Though you make a few vaild and probably true points, you are WAY WAY WAY OFF BASE for putting The Time in any POSSIBLE comparison to Orange Julius Jones. That guy would not get a distribution deal with Best Buy for an exclusive deluxe edition, and would not be able to headline a tour. The Time can tour, but they simply have no gas in the tank for such things. They should, as it would be great to get an hour and 45 minutes a night from them with full length songs, but they have no passion for it. It's a shame, cuz they could put on a hell of a show if they wanted to, but it is obvious they don't.

That actually says more than you might think. If Jesse was the black sheep of the group then now that he's gone they should be more productive not less so. There is more to this story than they want to air to the public. The group seems to want to keep the O7 brand alive based upon the sporadic posts/updates on FB but they don't seem too commited to it right now. Hopefully that will change in time. In my opinion I think all 7 of these dudes have mad love for each other but that they don't necessarily like each other as much as the fans think they do. If it wasn't for the sake of business I don't think some of them would roll with each other at all.

I think that the original members of The Time have lived one truth and spoken another for so long that we can only wonder what really went down from the very start. Even now they contradict themselves when reminiscing or talking about the future. This is a case where the music should be the sole voice we hear and heed. The funk ain't told us nothing that we didn't want to hear!!!

Actually, the story is that Jesse quit while The Time was on tour in Japan, shortly after the SNL gig. Jesse is mega talented, but not satisfied in his limited role within The Time or O7, where Morris Day is mostly the center of power within the group. Jesse will always want to do his own thing above all else. I have no idea why he can't play his role within the band AND have his solo act, but it seems like the situation boils down to personality clashes between Morris and Jesse. Terry Lewis held out for all seven members or nothing for this reunion, so if they aren't doing O7 gigs, it is probably due mostly to Terry feeling that the Jesse situation should or could be resolved. I hope they replace Jesse so we can have some predictability with the band, but I have to be say it would be kind of entertaining to hear them explain the December dust-up, if they were to announce that he's back in the fold. That is, if they can ever calm him down and coax him back. biggrin
