Prince Proteges you can do without I sorry but I had to get this out I have been trying to like The Family for years I just fucking don't Just listened to the screams of passion trying to give them another chance I just have never liked their sound I would love to hear why you like them besides the Prince connection I think that's the reason why I have tried to like them because it's a Prince thing

The Time. I can't stand them, never have. It's not the songs, it's not the instrumentation, it's Morris "dildo up the ass" Day. I loathe the cunt.

Yeah I remember you saying this Seriously, if Morris didn't know Prince there would be no way in hell that he would've been famous. I like the way The Time works together and yes Morris can be alittle much to take at times.

Re The Family, I think it's a wonderful album, the only thing that nips my nipples is Paul Petersons piss weak vocals, but even they are not enough to make me dislike the songs.

I think it is Paul that I dislike no singing ass

TC Ellis, Carmen Electra and Appolonia were about it for me. The rest of are talented musicians or singers. Even if i don't LIKE the songs I appreciate the skill set.

agreed on all three of em-I really think Appolonia was useless and so wish Vanity was in Purple Rain, but oh well

My dislike for them doesn't run that deep, but I never cared for them much either. TRUE BLUE

I love The Time, Rosie Gaines and Tamar...I can do without all the rest. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Imma throw Vanity in this list of likes The rest well... I can do without I don't consider Sheila a protege cuz she had a career before Prince. I love me some Sheila too.

I love Screams of Passion. That was the jam when it came out. I liked High Fashion too. Prince proteges you can do without: the list is LONG.

The Family and The Time are essential Prince protogees in my mind....Quality. Prince plays most of the music too of course. Hell, I even like Apollonia 6's album! The later Paisley Park releases were a bit limp though.

List of 'do withouts' would be a loooong list!
I own many of the protege releases but Jill Jones and Sheila E and Madhouse are the only artists I had on repeat and bothered to invest in with singles, extended mixes etc
Agree- The Time do nothing for me
The Family - Paul's vocals are weak

TC Ellis, & Carmen Electra : by the time they came on board the fantasy of what Prince did for other musical artist was gone :
Even though Vanity nor Apollonia had any real vocal talent , they had a mystic behind them which made them some-what interesting :
I lost interest in the protege's after 1987 - 1988
Taja Seville was the last of the proteges I even dare to follow : Hell I even lost interest in Prince in the mid 90's :
I thought The Family , Jill Jones , & Sheila E was cool though : " He's All Black, He's All White, Everybody's Gotta Jam 2Nite, Limouzine ".

That Morris you talk about is the Prince of UTCM that I can only take so much of

yeah, Sheila E was a protege, that's Prince's vision
She was an acting musician like a lot of the others throught the proteges groups(prior 2 Prince) but she wasn't a 'frontman'. the Sheila E that we know now came about only thru Prince-Glamorous Life Romance 1600 Sheila E and the Sheila of SOTT & Lovesexy era [Edited 3/22/12 12:04pm]

the Apollonia 6 (vision) failed, I so longed for Vanity 6
I think after the 1986 Parade years the protege's fell off Jill had a good album but the previous Prince + Protege chemistry didn't happen
I loved Mazarati live and how they performed Prince music, sometimes pairing with Sheila E etc but out of the Protege groups from 1982-1986 I could do without them.
After the 1987 period, outside of Madhouse all the other failed ie Carmen Electra etc

I agree, as good as Miss Sheila is, it is because of Prince that we all came to know and love her, she is my favorite. I do not like the Family and never really got down with the Time (loved them in PR, but that's it)

lol I love the Family, I think maybe if we saw more of them via videos performances, B sides etc etc we would be able to take it in differently.
The TIme - What Time Is It group I loved, I like how they fit into that whole COntroversy-Purple Rain vision along with Vanity 6
I wish we had more real videos and mix groupings happening between them Sheila E V6 & Prince

Maybe that could have been a factor as to why The Family never was "it" for me. When The Screams of Passion video/song came out, I will admit I was feeling it for a minute, because of the Prince connection. But I never felt the need to go and buy their stuff, they way that I felt for Vanity/V6 and Sheila E.
As for The Time, it just didn't happen for me, maybe because they broke up during the PR era (I was young, so outta sight, outta mind) I never really got a chance to get into them and did not feel the need to seek out their music. Even when watching PR movie, 2 this day, I will use their "song sets" as a commercial and FF or go grab a snack, lol.

I think it's easier just for me to say that I love The Time, I like some of The Family, I love Vanity 6 and some of App6. I love Jill Jones and Sheila E, the 93-96 version of the NPG, and some of Tamar's work.
The rest of his protege catalog does zilch for me. In fact, I think a lot of it is terrible music. And no, not terrible for Prince (in that its better than the average chart stuff). It's just plain terrible.
Carmen, Diamond and Pearl, TC, Tony, Andy Allo, Rosie's solo stuff, the list goes on. Terrible.

Why you guys hating on TC?! Miss Thang was my shit.
The proteges i can do without are: Carmen, Vanity/App6 (don't really care for either version) Andy Allo, Does Ingrid Chavez count?
The rest of them however =

You guys are nuts. I even like TC Ellis, Tony M and Carmen Electra.

for me the Family gave me another view inside the prince world, the photographs the music had an 'intimate' feel to it. Wish we had more 2 go on
the Times 1st 2 albums had my attention, in a different way. Hearing music back in the early 80's, Prince released music, always had an underground feel to it. One of the stations I listened to would do these Prince mixes, like 30second - 2 min of songs from the Time Vanity 6 Prince albums and B sides and like Sugar Walls and it made the songs sound so devilishly interesting.
That's how I was originally introduced to the Times 1st album

All of them beginning with Ingrid Chavez to the present. Andy is a four letter word.

Does Robin Power count as a protegee? Her "rapping" annoyed the heck out of me in Graffiti Bridge. Her hair looked nice and silky though. *~Reach for the moon, if you miss it, you will land among the stars~*

I like "The Time"..., I think I could do without the rest. PaisleyRose was here

It's interesting you say this. I just had a conversation with a friend of mine about this. Morris's persona(Prince's utcm persona)" can get tired fast. Although I like the time, I think if they had stayed together immediately following ice cream castles, that schtick would have eventually worn out. Most things that I worry about, never happen anyway

I'm not fond of Paul's reedy voice. I don't know why Prince always finds the worst singers for projects. Vanity is ok, she definitely had charisma and the chemistry was right for Prince at the time. She is lucky she had Brenda & Susan backing her up, but even they couldn't save Appollonia. The Time is great, it's all about the attitude. Ingrid Chavez solo stuff is not bad, and I do like her Paisley Park album but generally keep that private lol. Carmen turned out to be just awful, I just remember how he hyped her on the Sexy MF video and then the deep embarrasment when listening to her album. That goes double for any other "rap" protege. Rosie is a great singer, but sadly the chemistry never came together. Bria is hard to listen to, and I have tried. Mayte is ok, but she needed Brenda & Susan. Sheila has that chemistry with him, and a stellar musician. I guess overall the prot eges give him a chance to put out music he couldn't sing himself, ie. Girlsongs. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."
