Former PRINCE & The Revolution member Bobby Z. had a heart attack earlier this month. He has since been released and is back home. His former boss has a special treat in mind for him and fans.

PRINCE will be funking up the Oracle Arena next week in Oakland and PRINCE and company are rushing to get a new “Cali4nia” tour book ready for opening night! Tickets are selling fast, so you better hurry.

The shot above taken from the Parade era featuring PRINCE, Bobby Z., & Wendy Melvoin will be in the new version of the tour book. Also, other shots taken at PRINCE’s recording studio Paisley Park and his run of sold out shows at Madison Square Garden will be featured as well.

PRINCE & The New Power Generation wants Bobby Z. to come out soon to join the tour and play “Purple Rain” with him.

Prince had this to say exclusively to DrFunkenberry.com:

“Nobody plays drums on the song “Purple Rain” like Bobby. Never flashy or loud, he plays like a slow burn love song. Bobby’s way of playing made each live rendition of the song better than the last.”

^That is a really nice video. I look forward to the full interview and concert. Thanks for sharing. It's nice that they acknowledged that it would have been good to have Prince there. Also cool that Questlove gave a shout out to Love or Money with his outfit.

I've seen that guy who looks like Prince at a Prince party in Chicago. He was in full Prince unifrom there as well.

That video made me cry. I'm so glad they are all doing well and got together for the reunion. Speaking only for myself, I wish Prince would've joined them. Only he knows why he didn't, and please understand I've read and respect that not everyone agrees with me. I know he called when Bobby had his heart attack. I know he acknowledged him on tour last year, and that he had Dinner with Bobby and Vicky several days ago. He probably donated to the cause, and allowed them the use of the "Revolution" name when perhaps he didn't have to. Maybe he did even more, and that's all good.

My reasons for wanting are reunion are simple. I can still see them, I can still hear them, and I'm still dancing. Life is too short, and time waits for no one. None of us. Maybe Prince has come to terms with this in his own way, or perhaps I'm just being selfish. But I can't help wondering if Prince had almost died last year, if his old friends would've reunited with him had he asked? Just a thought... heart

I understand where you are coming from, but people are just differ in how they handle situations. I think that from the video it is crystal clear that Wendy thinks Prince should have been there--I would almost say that she seemed annoyed that he didn't show. But that's Prince. And I agree with you, it is fair to ask what he would expect from others if the shoe were on his foot. But the truth is, most people, not even his bandmates, can quite understand the decisions Prince makes. It just is what it is. Though I will say that whatever choices he makes, he has to live with them. Believe me, he's no different than the rest of us in that regard. We all have to live with our decisions.

The Revolution reunite to...rst Avenue

No Prince, no problem; band made magic without him

Brownmark and Wendy Melvoin

The Revolution played their first show at First Avenue since the '80s. Ben Clark

“That was historical,” declared Questlove, taking the stage to kick off a seemingly neverending DJ set that carried the crowd through the later hours of the night. “That’s not sh*t that happens every day.”

It was an apt summary of the nearly two-hour set by the Revolution, who reunited to perform their first show since 2003 and their first at First Avenue since the mid-’80s. That feeling of history being remade was palpable for even the most casual of Prince fans (of which there were few; most audience members were singing along word for word), as the band that backed the Purple One during the era that launched him into superstardom played note-perfect, emotionally charged renditions of many of his best songs.

The band reportedly only practiced a few times before taking the stage on Sunday night, but you’d never have known it from the quality of their performance; starting with “Controversy,” Wendy Melvoin commanded the crowd from center stage, singing Prince’s melodies and handling many of the rhythm guitar parts while the band laid down a groove behind her. All of the key players were in attendance, including Lisa Coleman and Dr. Fink on keys, Brownmark on bass, Eric Leeds on sax, and Dez Dickerson trading off guitar solos with Melvoin. But the player that got the most attention was the night’s honoree, drummer Bobby Z, who organized the reunion as a way to raise awareness of heart disease and celebrate his recovery from a near-fatal attack last year.

The evening’s intermission was really the only time that the benefit felt like a benefit; the band took a break to screen educational videos from the American Heart Association and Bobby Z and his wife, Vicki, delivered a speeches about their experience with his illness. (Interestingly, Vicki referred to the evening as their “first annual benefit,” leading me to wonder if we’ll hear more from the Revolution next year or if they’ll help book similar reunion-type shows by other acts.) Bobby Z thanked Prince “from the bottom of [his] repaired heart” for giving the reunion his blessing, then brought the group back to the stage and presented them with certificates from the Grammy Hall of Fame and had them recite famous lines from Purple Rain to uproarious laughter and cheers from the crowd.

Launching back into the music, the band got the crowd moving again with “1999” and “Life Can Be So Nice,” and then stretched into the 10-minute, Wendy and Lisa-penned “Mountains,” taking the time to showcase their individual skills and revel in an extended jam session with lots of spacey synth work from Dr. Fink. After that, it was all hits: “Baby I’m a Star,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” and, after a blink-and-you-missed-it walk off stage, a first encore of “Purple Rain,” which got the entire room swaying side to side with their arms in the air. If Prince were to have made a cameo that would have been the perfect time to do it, but the band carried on so proficiently and poignantly in his absence that it almost would have ruined the buzz they had built thus far.

The band returned for one more encore, starting with the classic “Uptown” with guest vocalist Greg Sain singing lead, and then stretching out into another extended jam over the chord changes of “Sexy Dancer,” seemingly stalling to keep the performance going as long as they could. The show ended on a strange note, as a woman in the center of the floor fainted and had to be helped off by a swarm of security staff while the players on stage watched and worried, but Melvoin kept the beat going throughout the incident and whipped the band up into one last climax at the night’s end.

All told, it was an uplifting and celebratory night, and an impressive showing from the pioneers of the storied Minneapolis Sound.

"When they tell me to walk a straight line, I put on crooked shoes" pretty much sums it up for Prince. We should be used to this after all these years. I personally think he just wanted them (The Revolution) to have their moment.

Hey, the thread made the front page!

For those of you just tuning in, the Revolution reunited in Minneapolis.

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

I would bet money Prince got real close to going to this. Plus Prince did do the right thing, in that he let it go on, and he gave Larry Graham permission to comingle with the Revolution. I also wonder if that was actually his guitar waiting or they went and bought a prop guitar just in case?

You can also tell by the amount of kiss assing Bobby did in interviews, to coax the rabbit out of the cage and make him feel appreciated....for a reason.

But this wasn't Prince as the focus, and he didn't have control over the event. It wasn't under his terms, and adding Dez and some others into the mix probably made it a different kind of emotional mix he probably couldn't deal with. Knowing what we do of Prince, he'll never do a straight up reunion with a full cast of past and present bandmates in the same room.
