List of ex Prince protégés/musicians/collaborators albums Hi y'all
Is there a definitive list of all Prince's ex protégés/musicians/collaborators' albums somewhere?
If there's none, maybe we should start creating one here?
Let's start something! As I have little free time I'll do only one or 2 artists a day. Please correct if mistakes/omissions. I'l start with Mightycow's list below (thanks).

Use discogs.com to go through people's productions/writing credits - will definately help for Jam & Lewis (who whored themselves out for the past 15 years to ANYONE it seems!) and bring up some surprising stuff for people like Wendy, Lisa, Bobby etc, etc.
Didn't know about Eddie M's albums though, they were new to me! So look forward to the rest of the thread!

Thanks NouveauDance
Discogs is definitely one of my references.
I'm planning to include only full albums (either solo or produced/side-projects, as including every credit on a couple of songs here and there would make the list endless). I guess Jam & Lewis will be my last addition, considering the amount of work...
I've heard only one Eddie M. album (Ward Street), it was OK but nothing too great, mostly uninspired pseudo jazz à la Kenny G., with Eddie playing over drum machines and funky or poppy tracks.
I've added a few more since u posted, but I'm calling it a day now, I'll add more tomorrow or sunday A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

This is shaping up to be a great list, databank! Thanks for putting in the hard work. Thanks to your update I've already come across a few albums I had no idea existed (for instance the Morris Day side project).
A great way to keep ourselves updated on any Prince affiliated artist releases is cdbaby.com. They specialize in underground/independent releases, and they're an especially good source when it comes to local Minneapolis artists who used to work for P. I've dug up quite a few albums using their site. Here's an example : local MPLS artist Sophia Shorai recorded an album with Tommy Barbarella called 'Long as you're living'.
Two additions to your list : *Candy Dulfer - Live in Amsterdam & Live in Montreux are both albums and (great) dvds. **Sandra St Victor has a new EP out, called "Sinner child (at my spheres)". There is also a remix EP. There's more info on her website www.sandrastvictor.com.
I'll do two artists for today as well. Maybe you can add them to your list?
TONY M as DEACON (source : wikipedia) the song 'Fast Break' on the 'Hoop Dreams' OST (1994)
JILL JONES (source : wikipedia)

Forgot to mention P was only involved in the first Jill Jones album. A second one was (partly) recorded, but shelved. Jill has since released some tracks of that album on line, such as 4 Lust.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'll do one more for today.
MARTIKA
*Martika (1988) *Como un juguete (1990) (Spanish version of 'Toy Soldiers', don't know if it's a full album in Spanish or just a single, though) *Martika's Kitchen (1991) *Twelve inch mixes (1992) (includes mixes of songs written by Prince) *Violince (2004) by a band called Oppera (Martika & her husband Michael Mozart) *Oppera (2005), also by Oppera
Anybody got any info on that 'Como un juguete' thingy?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
^ Thanks a lot for helping, it's greatly appreciated.
I had no idea about many of the albums/EP's you mentioned and I'd totally forgotten about Oppera. I'll do my homework and try to see about that Fiorillo spanish album/sings (?) you mention.
Hoop Dreams is already listed under Ben Sidran (who was the mastermind behing this project), it also features a ton of other Prince-related artists.
I won't do anything today as I spent 10 hours at work, but I'll get back to work ASAP

@Mighty Cow: thanks a lot 4 the updates. Your contributions are really appreciated and useful! I will add all of them in order starting with your original list, in order not to lose tracks of it all and forget stuff. I've added Dale and Missing persons today (I've omitted the Zappa albums that featured her because it's really waaaaay too out of topic). Also maybe please check the masterlist before you update (for example Gayle Chapman & Ingrid Chavez were already there, so no need for you to waste your time researching stuff unless of course you have additions/corrections to make).
@Music Lover 6: thanks too for your contributions, it's appreciated as well. I will NOT add albums featuring associated artists on only a few tracks, neither singles, to the masterlist, cuz it would become a complete mess in no time, but you're welcome to add those you know of in the thread itself.
Peace y'all

Azz Izz is the second and final album by soul singer Ren Woods (born Renee Woods) and was released on 19 March, 1982. The album contains I Don't Wanna Stop, written by Prince. The song was re-recorded by Woods' band, however, and the album contains no musical input by Prince, marking the first time he gave away a song without contributing to the released recording. Later printings of the album removed the song at Prince's request, although a reason has never been given. No singles were released from the album, and it did not enter the charts. I've added Three o' Clock and simplified the list a bit by putting all the associated artists' side projects and contributions to bands all under their respective artist's entry. I think it'll makes it easier to use ^^ A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

you are absolutely right (Mazarati was a BrownMark side project and not a Prince side project, contrary to popular belief) but I'm trying to keep the level of info as minimal as possible, in order to avoid the list becoming a mess, so the main info is always the one chosen. For example Elisa Fiorillo was originally just an artist recieving songs produced and composed by Prince, and she also contributed to Prince tracks in the studio, but since she later became a band member, I considered this the most important info and listed her only as "band member". Same goes for Dale or the Three O' Clock: they were signed to Paisley Park but Prince gave them songs and that's the most important info, while the only reason Tony Le Mans or Good Question will be added will be as being signed to Paisley Park. I'm confident that people who will want more info will find it by themself, using Princevault or Wikipedia. Thanks for the suggestion, though A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

^This will be very useful, thanks a lot! How and if I will use all this information or just parts of it (i.e. adding albums with only a few tracks produced by...) remains to be seen, but I'll guess I'll start with full albums only then later consider adding everything else as time goes by... That + the fact that my Prince discography website is in urgent need of an update for the last 6 months, let alone being completed for the missing years. God i wish I wasn't working full time (something I hardly ever do but have done for the last 9 months and decided to do for the next 9 months if everything goes as planned). Please keep updating your list, it's very cool to have all this info: I probably couldn't have found it all by myself due to lack of time [Edited 3/2/12 8:09am] A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Updated my post to 1995 in my rips. I missed a couple like T C Ellis that I thought would already be there or be added sooner or later.
