agreed. Prince HAS been massively average for quite some time. How one can blame Eric Leeds is beyond me. |

oh - that. then I disagree. Strong melodies, tight production, great arrangements and good vocals (not to mention stellar playing) can hardly be considered average imo. |

OH NO!!
"“ ‘Susannah’s Pajamas’ was among the tunes we recorded on the first day,” Eric Leeds says, describing the very first instrumental he recorded with Prince, at a warehouse on Flying Cloud Drive in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, in July 1984. “Prince already had the basic tracks done, so I was overdubbing. He had no particular melody line in mind for the tune, so I just treated it as a long solo. Mostly it was just an ad-lib that became the ‘melody’ of the song, so to speak.”"
So Eric improvised the main melody for this song? A FAMILY song?? In some places that's considered writing a tune.... |

YIKES!!
"“ ‘Yes’ was recorded several months later [in October],” Leeds continues. “Prince had the track done; I believe Wendy Melvoin played some guitar. He basically left it entirely up to me to do what I wanted. I created the melody and overdubbed several sax lines to make a section [and] played flute. The final version is edited from the original track, which was quite a bit longer. To be honest, I never cared for the mix or the edit, as it didn’t make much sense to me musically. Also, several of the harmony lines were, shall we say, underrepresented. So the final mix doesn’t really reflect what I had in mind when I recorded it. Obviously Prince heard it a bit differently.”"

Yeah- but LEEDS did it himself...and part of the point of this WHOLE long thing was that the OP was on about is that Prince did it all himself. So 3 out of 8 songs are not straight up Prince compositions as so many imply. Frankly I don't CARE that much, but the fact that people want to come on the boards and talk about what they KNOW without actually KNOWING irritates me. So if I have FACTS I present them. I've always said it's a great record and project no matter HOW it came about. I don't understand why people have to have an all or nothing attitude about Prince's work. |

I don't think anyone has ever suggested that Prince wrote Leeds' sax solos note for note. That would be just weird. On the other hand some people like to big up the contributions from band members. Anyway - Susannah's pajamas is a nice song, with a cool sax solo. The wooh is on the one! |
