Jesse, still up to his old tricks Much of the anger and hostility toward Jesse is not some crazy ass fans gone overboard on the internet. Jesses got a history of doing some nasty shit to people and he got called out in public for his shit.
Ive been in this business for over 40 years and was doing my own thing before Morris, Terry and Jesse arrived out of Minneapolis. The only person that had the most problems was jesse. He’s been a troublemaker and done some unprofessional shit for the sake of saying ‘I gotta take care of myself so fuck you’ attitude. I wasn’t going to post about jesse but I saw too much support for Jesses bullshit. The shit Jesse is good at is manipulating people into feeling sorry for him. I cant even tell you story after story about his bullshit. I thought being over 50 like the rest of us Jesse would have grown up and stopped this shit. I haven’t seen Jesse in 20 years and was I shocked to hear he put out in album recently. With his issues around his mental state I figured Jesse would have been in a hospital a long time ago.
Jesse claims he didn’t get paid for his music. How the hell is it that no one else in the group is claiming, men who also wrote songs, but aren’t making the same complaint? No one else is online or otherwise complaining about not getting paid? Morris isn’t on Mike baisden complaining about missing money. You don’t hear Bean overseas talking about not getting paid. More bullshit, nothing but bullshit. Who the hell spends 2 years recording an album only not to tour or promote it? You know how stupid that sounds? I did my own checking and the group had several engagements after the new year that never got confirmed because Jesse pulled this shit on facebook. That group had shows, but thanks to Jesse those got cancelled.
I read on his facebook something about paying for clothing and gear. How much does it cost to dress in all black? Cant that be bought at walmart? Jesse is associated with the time, which means you get free gear from companies. That’s how it goes, nothing else.
For whatever talent jesse has, he is still doing what he did 25 years ago. He still acts like he’s on the level as Prince, which he’ll never be. Someone posted here something about the original 7 covering up his 20 year absence from music. You are absolutely correct, how classy you stick up for your brother and cover for his bullshit only to have him turn on you in public. That’s some cain and abel shit. I’ve seen a lot of musicians come and go over the years and jesse is one still throwing people over the bridge to get ahead. Jesse needs to get his shit together if only for the sake of whatever d’angelo has. That self destructive shit Jesse does will only become a plague for d’angelo’s group. You’ll start hearing the stories of Jesse’s arguing and downing band mates. Jesse has publically said he doesn’t respect The Roots and said they were a weak group, yet quest love has been singing his praises. In this industry we know who’s doing what and when. He’s been doing this shit and is still doing it. He’s got shades of Donny Hathaway. Donny was talented but troubled and Jesse needs to get that shit checked before he ends up like him. I haven’t been around this long for nothing people.
I saw something about Jesse claiming he’s Muslim? I did some fact checking around and when’s the last time Jesse has been to the mosque? What community do you affiliate with to do your volunteer work? What young men has he reached out to? That’s because he hasn’t. I have family & friends who are Muslim and I let them read what Jesse posted and they were offended. Jesse stop burning your bridges and stop talking about your bandmates. You quit the group that made you famous, be a grown man and walk away.

This is why I say that the "Original 6" should just find a new guitarist and move on.I would hate for their plans to be abandoned just because *one* member is causing drama and doesn't want to cooperate.

True, when one moves on, just keep it going. That shouldn't stop the show. I think the O7 minus one for now, should just hire a new, reliable guitar player. There's plenty good ones out there. They should just let their first album ride out and then do a new album, with a new guitar player, and change the name altogether. Their longtime fans will know who they are regardless of any name change.

What time is it? Time 2 grow up.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
yep, i too think it's time to move on. Jesse should still be afforded the right to hit back though, we've all said our piece, Jesse has said his, so maybe all Jesse related threads can be locked up now. The arguements are just going in circles.

This is interesting. Can you list out what were the shows/venues and in what cities they were scheduled to appear but got cancelled solely because of Jesse?
Also I think we all know that calling oneself Muslim, Christian or Jewish doesnt mean we all go to church, mosques or synagoges (sp?), myself included.

OldSchoolMusic - really, what is your sole purpose for airing this? What do you want us to do, say "yeah, you're right and it's all Jesse's fault."
PLEEZ!
You saw the responses on here, signed up, waited, and this is the first of your posts that has been obviously haunting you since you read the previous posts on the org. We're all human and we all make mistakes. If we were all perfect, then we wouln't be having this discussion.
If anyone is to blame for the turmoil and demise of the group, It's Prince. It's really his group and name, and the O7 can't even fuck with it!! He fired Jam & Lewis in 1983. I don't hear you talking about that!! He was paying the members scale because they were all "hired" musicians to front Prince's songs, that Prince played all by himself. They never made money from the start, and he didnt count on them becoming just as popular and in some places, better recieved than his own material.
The Time became the Frankenstein that Prince built and destroyed every funk bank in it's path, in a very short period of time I might add. To record and tour under the Original 7, is a grasp at recaputuring the magic, while diminishing "The Time."
Let's say in 1985; the original members were given the name. had a chance to record and tour on their own as "The Time" and Prince left them alone or even remained invovled, it would be an entierly different story and maybe a happier one. I least I can imagine it would be.
You can have your two cents back. I don't need it.

You signed up for this one post??? Lots of conjecture with no quotes? Googled "Jesse Johnson disses The Roots"...um...nothing? Did find the onterview with Jesses about the split. So you ASSUME he gets free gear and pays for none himslef. You assume he only has one suit. You assume flights are covered. You asume things will fall apart with D'Angelo. You assume Jesse will jump offa hotel balconey (Jesse is well past 33). You did fact checking? Puhhhleeeeeze ..share those facts. Cause your post is all assumption form what I can tell. I don't even care about the whole situation (other than looking to see what the posts are about- I do readt thru). I just hate seeing people register to diss someone with no facts in evidence. Your 40 years in the biz doesn't mean much if all you have is "fact checking" you aren't willing to share. Might as well say ..."trust me - I know these things. "

Is this really such a big deal? I mean, I love JJ and The Time, but there must be, what - like 300 people world wide who even give two shits?

What Jesse did was unprofessional. There is no excuse for that shit. Somebody on one of these posts said it best, its like when a little kid messed up and then you try to act like you didn't do it. As a man, thats despicable. Why waste the time of six other people if your financial situation was so bad. What are you doing besides this album to get by? Are you playing with other artists, doing studio work? Jesse could have done both gigs and made double or triple the money. Instead he gets mad because O7 made a respectful statement letting him leave on his own and didn't put him out on front street like he did to them to start all this bullshit. I think everyone is failing to remember how all this started and there is a reason why Jesse hasn't worked or been in the spotlight for 15 to 20 yrs. That bridge with those guys is burned for good in a real ugly way. I enjoy reading the comments and discussions on this website from time to time. This Jesse situation took the cake for me, so I wanted to add some truth to whats been said.

i appreciate what you've said here and in your orignial post.closer to the biz side of it, im sure it plays different from the fan side. maybe not. ive heard about jesse being difficult, drugged-up and crazy. those kinds of troubles dont go away overnight. i have also noticed that jesse has been gone for awhile but i thought it was bcos his music started to suck. he is still an ace guitar player but his songwritng has been in the toilet for ages now. IMO.
from the clips of interviews w/ jesse recently something doesn't seem quite on the level w/ what he's saying but i have to agree with NouveauDance in that most people don't have 2 shits to give about jesse or the time. and ive been a fan since 83'. Prince #MUSICIANICONLEGEND

Two shits is being generous. Some people are still looking for the shit they're not gonna give! When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

That's the thing though Sis. We're headed into March and yet there has been no announcements of any shows whatsoever from the O7 so I'm starting to see Jesse's point. I know they are out of a guitarist but I have a hard time believing that there aren't alot of good guitarist out there that would sure as heck love to play for the O7.
I'm continuing to monitor the situation, but if March, April and May comes around and I don't see any movement from the guys about a tour or upcoming shows, then I would guess that at that point we cant be keep blaming jesse for this.

Hi there, and I hear you, but at this point, it's about the 07 and their fans. Jesse is out of the picture, so be it, it's old news, and life has moved on as it should.
At this point I guess the O7 fans are just waiting to see what the remaining 07's next steps are, and if they are going to go ahead with performing as a band, with a new guitarist. Could be they're trying to figure out what to do with the name of the band now, as well as trying to work out other issues, before moving forward. I do think they should keep fans updated as to what their current/future plans are though, if any at all.. [Edited 2/16/12 11:59am]

I think the fact that Morris Day & The Time are still booking gigs well into the summer speaks volumes about any chance of an O7 tour. When they released 'Condensate' the 'Part Time' line up had gigs up till February of 2012, now they're booked into July of 2012.
