I agree, but let's be honest...The Time is not exactly on the Beatles' level They're not nearly as well known.Any 80s R&B band could replace a member and it wouldn't be a big deal.
As for your other point....yeah,the name would be the only obstacle for them,if they decided to proceed with a tour.

in retrospect, they really should have chosen another name.Flyte Tyme would have been perfect.

You're correct about replacing members. It's not a life or death situation. I think the issue is when does it go from being "The Original 7ven" to "Morris Day & the Time v2.0"? We've already got the alternate line-up with fill ins for the originals not involved. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I think Morris Day and the Time will still be performing whether O7 continues to or not... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

All they have to do is take Tori from that group and add him to the reunion line-up.He obviously knows all the guitar parts that Jesse would have played
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Again, it was Jimmy Jam who explained why they didn't used Flyte Tyme because the names does not consist of the Original members. Its not a big deal ofcourse they have to move on and us fans are waiting but I still feel it will not be the same with Jesse no matter how much you or anyone here tries to downplay it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The point is why bother to have 2 line-ups if neither consists of all original members. Let Morris Day & The Time either
-start playing the new material and move forward
-or keep playing their routine setlist and forget Condensate & The O7 name and move forward
Fans will still love them either way but why pay to see two bands perform almost identical setlists except for a track or two of the new music. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I'm sure they could have found a more appropriate name that doesn't necessarily indicate that all the original members are involved...you know,to prepare themselves for an unexpected departure, whether it's Jesse or any other member.

Maybe if they had known, maybe the O7 could have went out on tour with Van Halen. VH is having Kool & The Gang open up for them. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Are you serious?? Kool and The Gang opening for Van Halen?!
I'd love for the 07 to do a tour with Cameo and Midnight Star.....a "package tour" foucusing on 80s R&B/funk.

Nope. Just checked FB and someone posted, "it's after 7... what's up?" Other than that, nothing. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

You must haven't seen the million recent Van Halen threads in the other section. I think Van Halen will draw a bigger audience than Cameo & Midnight Star. That's like a Tom Joyner cruise package. I saw Kool & The Gang 10 years ago at a festival and they drew a bigger audience than all of those bands and this was without JT Taylor. It was their universal appeal that drew such a big audience. Not too sure if they could pull that feat off now.

If these people don't get that at this point they never will. There isn't one r&b band from the 70's or 80's still with all their core members from that period. Lakeside did it for awhile throughout the mid nineties but i don't think even they have all original members now. I know one of their original members passed recently. But those groups didn't change their names to signify they are the originals. They can't use the name "Original 7ven" with other members, because they wouldn't be original. There is a difference in being billed Lakeside and The Original Lakeside. The Rolling Stones don't have all of the original members, but they are not marketed as such and don't have a name that ties them down to any particular members. Now if a group is named after someone in it, then that person can't be replaced (Bon Jovi, Sade, Van Halen, Huey Lewis & The News, Brothers Johnson, etc.) You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

It doesn't matter really. Especially with Jesse, temporarily or permenantly, forfeiting his spot. Original 7ven might have been intended to represent the original bandmembers of The Time, but it doesn't have to represent that going forward. Ever heard of the r&b group The Originals? What did that mean? The Original what? Did it ever matter to anyone? No. What did BoyzIIMen mean really? Again it doesn't matter to anyone, right?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Who says they can't? It's just a name. There aren't any legal ramifications that i'm aware of if they decided to replace a member or two. They could have left the Original off and just named the band 7ven to keep fans from getting all testy. I've never seen a band cause fans(Prince stans in particular) to have a shit fit over original members or the band's name. [Edited 1/7/12 20:35pm] Don't laugh at my funk

I take it you don't know about David Lee Roth vs Sammy Hagar (Van Halen) or Peter Gabriel vs Phil Collins (Genesis). This is nothing compared to that, especially with Van Halen. Especially since they're more well known than The Time. Some Rolling Stones fans say that they weren't as good after Brian Jones.
The problem is the name. They gave interviews and put out a DVD saying "Original 7ven" is the original members to differentiate themselves from "Morris Day and The Time" which are not the originals, but are still performing. It's like saying The Original Jackson 5, but having Rebbie in Michael's place. If the O7 were called something else, then there is not as big a problem with anyone quitting. But as it stands now, it would be false advertising to say they are "original" when they have replacements. Like having a can of soda with "Classic Coke" printed on the outside, but containing "New Coke". You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

It seems like we've gotten all we're gonna get though...nothing left to do except play my Condensate cd on repeat.
