Okay, I just have to say this about this subject and this post does not apply to you in particular but in general about this issue brought up again and again.
I get this vibe that since Prince got his big break first and then gave the guys a break that this fact somehow elevates Princein some way, or diminshes the talent that the guys had.
Fact of the matter is, Prince was discovered by someone. No one has ever thought that the person who gave Prince his big break was more talented that Prince, or that Prince's talent was less because he got a big break. Most people think that the person who gave Prince his big break was smart enough to recoginze true talent.
Why does this sentiment applies to Prince giving the members of the Time their big break. Why does it mean that just because Prince was smart enough to recognize talent that they somehow didn't have talent??
Now mind you, some members of the Time have more talent than others... but they all have talent in the niche they fill in the ensemble.
I just wish people would stop dismissing the talent of this group simply because it was Prince who discovered them and capitalized on their talent. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

It's hard to really compare this situation with any other bands, except maybe NIN or Bowie.
Prince wrote, performed and recorded WHOLE albums for them - just having Morris lay down vocals in the studio. The Time were hired to be a public face and stage act, performing all of these songs live. No one is saying that they are not extremely talented in their own right, but they performed Prince's material and were paid by him and WB.
NIN was the same way . . . it was just Trent Reznor recording the album himself, but he needed a "band" to take on tour. They were talented as well, but no one goes to see them.
One thing about Prince is that he doesn't do anything "quietly" -- he put them on the map, then he OWNED them. Put 'em in his 2 movies, fired them when he thought they were out of line. We all know about his business practices even when it comes to himself, and his failed relationships with friends and bandmembers, so why is this any different?
I do think it's BS that they can't use the name The Time.

^^^ but surely doesn't changing the band name benefit the band more, had they have used/been allowed to use the name they still would have had to pay Prince some royalties for the name, but now he don't get zip. same applies to fdeluxe. full control and $$. I'm sure prince is holding out for some sort of re release/ remaster project which is the reason for the name thing.
we'll have to wait and see.

I'm not sure how that works . . . they've been touring as Morris Day and The Time on and off since the early 90s, and I doubt they've paid Prince anything. Maybe because this is a recording things are different?
People are still calling them The Time, and they probably will do so throughout their entire career. Same as how we all called Prince "Prince" during the symbol days.
You're right though, regardless of how the new name came about, Prince gets NADA.
Condensate is actually a nice album too . . . makes me wonder if Prince has heard it, and what he thinks. Some of the tunes, like #Trendin and One Step would've been cool Prince songs! Strawberry Lake sounds like it was intentionally made as an overall tribute to Prince - even stuff like "skinny dipping purifies" harkens back to that scene in Purple Rain.

oh i'm sure he's heard it hence all of sudden he's gonna tour canada lol man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I think the reason for the change is: once they realize that Prince would not allow them the use of the name "The Time" they decided to go with a totally new name so that when this ensemble eventually go separate ways again... certain members can't go out and hire some musicians and tour giving the impression that it will be the original 7 like what happened with the band name "the time". Morris toured many years with different people as the Time. I am sure Jesse, Jam and Lewis will not be available for tour indefintely since they have other projects. This will protect the integrity of the identity of the band by prevent Morris or who ever to go out and tour as O7. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

AMEN!! You made some valid points. As I pointed out in another thread,it takes more than one person to create a successful band. It's a team effort. While Prince did his part (writing and producing the songs),the guys did their part (bringing the concept to life every night onstage...singing and playing instruments). We must give credit to everyone involved.

@ madhouseman: Thanks! I was wondering when someone would get around to posting this. Anything posted contrary to the popular mythology usually gets too heavily debated or flat out flamed. Glad you stepped up. I just can't do it anymore LOL! Again thanks.

No problem. I've been researching this for almost 20 years with a lot of personal interviews, etc. Debate is great and I'm glad I could add to that with some facts. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. The entire 80 minute documentary is on the DVD included in the Best Buy CD/DVD combo. They talked about all the stuff from the book "Possessed, The Rise and Fall of Pirnce" but they included a lot of stuff that wasn't in the book. I didn't know Terry was chasing Prince and throwing eggs during the infamous food fight. It must have funny to see Prince running with those high heels and Terry running wearing a suit and dress shoes
