It's petty of Prince to deny the use of the name by his best frenemies. There's money to be made, and he deserves to make it, from the use of the name. But it's found money on his part, because he can't really use it on his own.

very good point.

Naw, I think it's better this way. I hear people here are loving F-Deluxe, so it just makes their own work stand out better. The Original 7ven are talened folks, they do not need The Time tag.

Anyway, honestly, let Prince have his thing. If he doesnt want people fucking with it without his approval, then fine. Respect that.

Well, they can sort all that out behind the scenes, countdown to the show. I'm going to follow them as The Time, Original 7ven, whoeva. I love that pic. The fellas are looking good, sharp in their suits, they look like they mean business. Can't wait. I hope they play some of Jesse's music too.

I didn't think about that; but it's probably because I know he'll never do it.

Ya know, if the name thing really IS "all about finance" at ANY level....it kinda got me to thinking about what Mr. Harris said in that Billboard interview:

" We're planning on hopefully doing a ton of festival things. There's some interesting possibilities for bills with people that are kind of intriguing -- I can't say names yet, but where we would basically co-headline or even open for somebody."

If His Majesty really wants to get paid...

One can envision tours / lineups that could sell B-I-G numbers..... seats AND merch.

Penny wise? He should "embrace" this whole project. Wish I was a fly on the wall....to hear those "intriguing" convos @ touring next year.

In my opinion, they should not even consider courting this guy.

I wouldn't blame them one bit for feeling that way (or for doing it that way)....and they'll do fine on their own (as far as being a tour draw).

But....man...the money.........yikes.......for some of these "fantasy live bills"? It just seems like a ripe apple just waiting to get picked. Just need someone to get all the players at the table &.....BAM.....paydays big enough to make one "pause" about the career / integrity thang.

So I take it they can only sing new songs that they have just newly written. All of the Time stuff was written by Prince....so if he won't let them use the name The Time...then why would he let them sing the songs he wrote?

Besides isn't this Hypocritical....considering Prince himself went thru the whole Artist/ "Slave" thing in the later 90s?

They do sing the old songs in concert. I saw Morris Day and the Time last year and they performed songs from the original Prince-controlled albums. I'm sure the original Time configuration can do the same, although I think they will focus on the new material.

I doubt Prince would do it anyway. I also think he don't care what his former proteges do even if he tells them "don't use the name I gave you." Seems like both The Time and The Family were happy to oblige rather than go through lawsuits. More power to them.

You know, sometimes the quick money is not as B-I-G as the potential long-term money.

Also, in reference to the comment I responded to above--just as the Morris Day and the Time did, Fdeluxe performed old songs like "Screams of Passion" in live performances recently, so it seems Prince doesn't have any problem with his protege groups performing the old material live...just as long as they don't use the group names that he owns. rolleyes After all, when they sing the songs that he wrote, he still gets paid. lol

Good point. Plus, honestly, not being a real artist / musician myself, I can't really speak to what their "price" would / should be to basically sell-out for the mega payday. Maybe the art IS worth the principled stance anyway.

I'm closely listening to the first Time album today and, of course, Prince's fingerprints are all over this album. What is interesting to me is that as the group evolved and took on a life, personality, and sound of its own in subsequent albums, that is when Prince felt threatened by the talent of the Frankenstein that he had created and felt the need to exert more control over it. To the point that he wouldn't let the monster live if it didn't have the creator's permission. The problem is that these proteges actually have tons of talent and ability and don't need the Doctor's permission to exist or perform--even if they have to take on another identity. wink In saying that, I still love Prince's music when it is good...as it so often is. But I have to give the Time their props, too.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

You could'nt have said it any better! The Orriginal7 is such a talented band, especially since they have ALL had time to grow to a higher level as musicians. I expect nothing less than success from them.

They've been described as Prince's Frankenstein. At times, it's said that they outshone him, which I don't necessarily buy but I can understand the argument.

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were amazing studio gurus. Morris and Jerome are a great comedic duo who should have been in more movies/TV together. They're talented musicians that are game-tight when they're together.

I agree with you. It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway . . . they'll be just fine without Prince.
