Everyone in the original 7ven not named Jerome of THE TIME went on to write and produce for either themselves or other artist. How would you rank them as producers?

Jesse Johnson, easily. In fact, I'd rank him equally with J&L. Some of Jesse productions, not just for himself, are my favorite productions of the 80's. Stuff like Da Krash and the Ta Mara & The Seen material.

After that, I'd say Monte. I always wished he did more. He did Janet's "The Pleasure Principle", and as much as I love Jam & Lewis, that might well be my favorite song on Control. And, Monte also did Alexander O' Neal's "If You Were Here Tonight" which is one of my favorite Alex jams.

Point taken, but I haven't been too fond of anything I've heard from J&L in the last decade. "All For You" came out in 2001, and I can't think of anything J&L have worked on since then that I would describe as anything but "mediocre", except perhaps the new Original 7Ven album, which obviously Jesse worked on too.

I would give J&L the edge simply because of the quantity of really great stuff they did in the 80's and 90's, but I like their best stuff and Jesse's best stuff about equal, I'd say.

I agree that Jam and Lewis was on "cruise control" over the last few years. I think they did some really good songs, though. Especially some of the songs for Yolanda Adams and Heather Headley. However, I don't know if they live up to their work in the 80s and 90s, though.

I love Jam & Lewis' earlier work. For a fan of pop producers like me, they're a lot like SAW, in that the bigger they got, the more the quality dropped off. I think the cut off point was the early/mid 90s. I think they were spent after 'Janet' or 'Velvet Rope'.

Cherelle's 'High Priority' is probably their highlight for me, it's so fucking brilliant.

The last Jam & Lewis productions I remember liking other than Janet's were the tracks they did for Mel B and The Spice Girls.

As much as I loved Jesse in the 80s, I'd put him behind Jimmy and Terry because he just wasn't as productive as them. After 7's "Nights Like This" is my favorite Jesse song not by Jesse.

I interpreted the OP as meaning Prince was the obvious #1 and Jam & Lewis were the best second greatest producers.

Jesse is the undisputed 2 on this list
