This is true. The same thing happened to Rosie Gaines a few years back. But with that in mind, Rosie was also pissed at the lack of respect Prince displayed towards their relationship. She made that known to some of us. So yeah, he appears to have a history of doing things that annoy or piss off humans that try to have relationships with him.
The dude is gonna end up alone without anyone who cares for him as a human when he dies. It's sad. Space for sale...

I've seen quite a few celebs sitting amongst fans in the non-floor seats, at arena shows, at a few of the Prince concerts I attended over the years, so it doesn't surprise me that many celebs pay to attend his shows.

Dude we get it. Prince is a supposed douchebag with other people. Can you let someone else hate for a few months now? You are so on a Bart Van Hemelin level of hate, god.

Doing the Musicology show in Philadelphia. Patti Labelle was pulled up on the stage to perform with Prince. I had the bootleg video of this performance. I saw an interview with Patti were she mentioned she paid for a ticket to the show. She was out in the audience just like the rest of the fans.
It has also been mentioned on this board that bandmembers do not get free tickets to give to family members. So I am under the impression that P is not big on freebies. Wow. I guess a lot has changed since back in the day. Back then even I was offered free tickets to Prince shows by a member of his band and I was on the guest list for a show being invited by somebody of his crew who I had just met the day of the show. WTF? I'm just contributing to the recent conversations that are being created by Prince's recent assery. Don't blame me cause the dude keeps doing things that make him look like a douche!
I go months and months and even years not even posting on Prince related topics but when he pulls stuff like this (and at the rate he has been doing it the last couple weeks), if I am interested in commenting, I will. I ain't losing sleep over this nor do I doubt anyone else is. After all, this is an online discussion forum...right? Space for sale...

Why would you assume or doubt that some celebrities don't have to pay to go to any of his shows, because quite frankly, that could go either way--some probably do, and some probably don't. Especially when there's expenses to be paid, like bandmembers/techs, and other expenses/fees. [Edited 5/28/11 11:02am] I was at a Prince concert once many years ago with a band and I don't think think they payed to get in, but were invited. But I never pretended I know anything, that's why I was asking if she has any info on that. I guess you may be you right and some pay and some don't. Some of the comments in this thread seem downright unreasonable. I think it would have been generous for Prince to give Mayte a comp, but why is it "disrespectful" that he didn't? I'm sure that there are other performers who actively bar their ex(s) from admittance to their shows. By all accounts, he didn't do that.
The claim that it's "disrespectful" because she was, at a time in the past, his wife, had a child with him, shared a bed with him, blah, blah, blah, makes it sound as if everyone else who has been married to someone and had a kid with that person, but is now divorced from that person, continues to *give priority* to their ex's feelings and welfare, etc. Most people who are divorced don't even want to be in the same building as their ex. Compared to what some people do to their exes, not giving a complimentary concert ticket seems almost not worth mentioning.
And when did they part ways? Was that in the last few years? Or over a decade ago?

It's not. These folks have had it in for Prince for a longgg time watching his every move ready to write/pounce lol.
Meanwhile Prince and thousands of others are still getting their groove on like it aint nuthin but a thang

For the record, my Rosie Gaines story was during the Jam of the Year tour. Cha know, the one where he opened each show with the song Jam of the Year and used her recorded vocals throughout---during the live show. Space for sale...

Hi, this is Dave....I am not gonna go on with this, but we know some of the celebrities that went to the show, and of the ones we know....NONE OF THEM PAID. That is how we know. And people this is not about money, things are fine...its about respect. Why should Whitney Houston go for free? Mayte was an original member of the New Power Generation, had a 10 year long working/personal relationship with the man, did not have a horrible ugly divorce, kept quiet about anything personal regarding them, and pretty much does her own thing quietly and respectful of the past they shared.
I know there are a bunch of you fans that would drink the poison purple kool aid if it was handed out at one of these shows, so none of the negative remarks said here, or on her facebook page will be taken personally.
She has no ill will toward him and is not degrading his immense talent in anyway. She just stated a point on her own personal facebook page, and now it made it on to here, which is no big deal, but if she wanted the org people to comment directly she would have posted it on here.
This remark was not meant to cause such an uproar, it was just stating a fact. She is fine and over it, and believe me, did not shed a tear. In fact, it was like whatever..its dinnertime anyway. So please stop looking so deep into things and take it for what it is, just a girl whose ex disrespected her, and her being like....really? And please, if you dont know facts, or personally talked to Prince or Mayte about there previous affairs, nobody cares to hear your pointless assumptions you devised by listening to a song you assume was written about her and "how she gone did him wrong"......remember when you assume...you make an ASS out of U and ME....

all total bullshit..these grownassed "professionals who are well past it" and have no ill will are the first t post their ..disappointments..publicly on Facebook...then cry foul later lmao.
You and other say certain fans drink the purple kool-aid..seems like prince fed the past people it because they are HOOKED and pissed when it doiesnt go their way, they feel dissed/disrespected, or what have you from him.
I mean WHO DOES THAT? lol

I think people need to realize that with social networking being what it is--these comments are going to be commonplace. I think the key here is, treat people with respect and they won't call you out.
Shoot, look at J-Lo. She made dirty pictures and now her husband is gonna make bank off of it. Sure, he is a punk for releasing the video but she's part to blame for getting naked in front of a camera in the first place. Space for sale...

agreed!
I also agree with Spinlight....he summed it up perfectly!
"Why is he supposed to feel compelled to reach out to an ex? It's so bizarre that some of you ascribe your own feelings onto him. Their breakup was not amicable. Everyone knows how ugly it got. Why the hell should he feel so benevolent? It's laughable that so many of you put these people through your own filters yet if you were in the same spot, it's likely you would act the same way". I'm more confused about her needing 'approval' to go to a show? I'd think if it was just interest in seeing him live, she could have bought tickets and gone to a show and he'd never have to know she was there.
Unless he's got some sort of restraining order or something and has to be alerted if she's in the vicinity?
That part is more strange to me than Prince expecting her to pay. (Asshole as that seems, that's pretty typical of Prince.)

ok said my peace..... Mayte has about 5000 fb friends and a lot of them sure are Prince fans. Like I said I am not friends with her on fb, but 49 of my fb friends alone are and they are probably all Prince fans. So it's quite naive to post it on her "private" fb page and assume it would not make it to a forum like the org. Why isn't anyone commenting on the fact that it took huge stones for her to ask in the first place?
We don't know what went down between the two of them, but she dated Tommy Lee afterwards (hint), she asked for tickets to his show and when she didn't like the answer she went public with it (hint). Two things we KNOW for a fact Prince wouldn't dig from anyone, let alone his ex-wife.
Isn't it possible that in order to avoid any issues involving favoritism that he just makes everyone pay? He's been around for 30+ years, imagine the amount of free tickets in LA he'd have to reserve for all the friends he's made over the years? Maybe it's just his way of being democratic about it.
Just sayin'.

That is what I am trying to understand Spinlight.
She obviously contacted him hoping to go for free. If she just wanted to go to the concert she could have bought a ticket and he would be none the wiser for it.
I like Mayte (as much as I can like anyone I don't know) but seems to me troubled was stirred up for troubles sake.
You want to go to the concert, buy a ticket and leave him out of it. Because of their half-baked mistakes, we get ice cream, no cake; all lies, no truth; is it fair to Kill the YOUTH ~~ Party Up
