Would you have done what Mayte did at her age?

Would you-at 17 or 18 years old- leave your parents to live and work with someone twice your age?

Im saying that she did naything wrong. Actually the opposite. She's very brave, but I don't think I would have made that decision because Im at that age now and I can't even image leaving my parents to work for a man I've only know for a year or so through letters.

Sorry if something like this has been posted but It's not easy looking through all these threads. boxed

Yeah, for Prince I would have!! My mom may not have allowed it though...hell, I'm almost guaranteed she wouldn't have allowed it. I think her parents should be ashamed for allowing such nonsense. I guess money will make people do anything. But if it were my decision, I would have. I graduated and left home at 16 anyway. So to go and work for Prince and be his muse, I would do it in a NY minute!! biggrin But I think you are smart for not entertaining the idea, it can get you in alot of trouble, as it did Mayte, she wasn't ready for what a man like Prince needed. Seeing as how it was more than just work...

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Mayte first came to the attention of Prince in 1990 when her mother, Nell submitted a video cassette of Mayte's performance (Wikipedia)

I'm 17 and my mom would never go for that! lol

But if it was completely up to me, I'd definitely consider it because that's a once in a lifetime dream opportunity.

Exactly.

At that age, I would have wanted to do it, but it would never have happened.

yes absolutely! oppotunities have got to be snapped up. i left home to persue a career at 17, fully supported by my mum. i made plenty of mistakes but had the time of my life making them.

my own daughter is 16 & already making mature decisions. i would never stop her from persuing her ambitions

if the worst she does is have sex with someone in the process, then whoopieshit!

It's weird, that is the exact thing my mom brought up when I asked her if she would have let me go. She said "well, seeing as how you've loved the man since you were a baby, then I would have strongly considered it. I think you would have been in good hands because I knows you and know you could have dealt with anything Prince put down." And if she felt that I did, then she would have let me go because she "wouldn't have wanted to keep me from making my dreams come true." I was like "wow..you woulda let me? Cool." wink

Remember her parents were the one's encouraging this move. Daddy sent videos of Mayte dancing to Prince. So basically, she did what she did on the advice of and blessing from her parents.

I without a doubt would have done it. Does he still do that kind of thing now? I mean send in a demo of dance or singing and he says yay! or nae? Idk confuse Ok anyway, I think my parents would have definetly. My mom especially because she pushes my gift extensively with singing and dancing, and if she had well we had an opportunity like this, i know for a fact she would not turn it down. Its a great opportunity of a lifetime, to be with someone of that musical caliber. I mean of course i would call her every week, of every second , of everyday, but heyy care about your children. It would be the opportunity of a lifetime. Like emenim said, and i hate to quote a rapper on a Prince site but "you only get one shot, do not it is your chance to blow, opportunity comes once in a lifetime." or something like that lol prince

I couldn't even go out on a date with someone 3 years older than me, so that's the end of that.

I disgaree... Mayte handled him enough to get Prince to fall in love and marry HER, despite Prince being surrounded by many beautiful women that wanted to be Mrs. Nelson.

Ask Nona, Cat, Carmen, ... wink

anywho, even at her young age, Mayte was well traveled and came out of her heartache in a good way. She doesn't come off bitter at all and even befriended the same woman rumored to be her husband's mistress.

People do not understand that Mayte is Puerto Rican and in her culture, what she did at her age was no biggie. Jennifer Lopez was out and doing thangs at that age as well, gotta do what you have to do in order to make it in the biz. Mayte took her chance and fell in love, thankfully she walked away sane and happy. Good for her.

right. and for also for the record... I would not have been able to do what Mani did at 22. I don't think I could have moved to a whole 'nother freaking country to try to get a job to meet someone. It almost sound insane of an idea... but hey it worked. Both of those women did a huge leap of faith to get close to him.
