What Ever happened to The Time's new album and tour

I didn't believe it when they pubbed it but I was just curious what happened to the release of the album. I remember earlier in the year they "promised" it out this year with a tour and even with Jesse Johnson as the opening act. It seems like they have gone their separate ways again. Whats the dealio?

They should split it up. Release 5-6 straight up Time tracks to the web for the old-school fans then have a major label pro-tools new-school commercial album featuring the ineveitable guest appearances and bs that goes with every pop release.

I don't know if you heard but they're still working on it. With Terry and Jimmy side projects and Jesse promoting his latest album, things can get delayed real easy. Don't worry Time fans, all good things take time(lol). Besides, after all these years you don't want them to rush it and the product comes out lousy do you? I didn't think so.

Several months ago, there was an article in Billboard, about the new album:

Billboard

The Time Reunite For Tour, New Album

by Gary Graff, Detroit | June 07, 2010 11:50 EDT

The members of The Time predict that this will be the year the iconic funk group's original lineup releases its first album since 1990's "Pandemonium."

Bassist and primary producer Terry Lewis tells Billboard.com that the as-yet-untitled set -- which The Time has been working on in earnest since reuniting for the 2008 Grammy Awards -- is "going into mixing," though keyboardist Jimmy "Jam" Harris, who promises that we'll "absolutely hear (the album) this year," cautions that "we probably have a couple more songs in us" before the set is complete.

And frontman Morris Day says that's been the problem -- too much of a good thing. "The album has been done for a long time now, but we keep adding to it," Day notes with a laugh. "So the deal is we've got to stop cutting at some point because it just keeps getting better and better. At some point we have to have the attitude that, OK, there can also be a second and a third project; we don't have to shoot the whole wad on this one. So I think we're gonna stop now; we might do one or two (more) songs, but we're going to go ahead and put this thing out, finally."

The Time is currently unsigned, but Jam says the group is exploring several options and has had plenty of inquiries, including from Island Def Jam's L.A. Reid, who's a big fan. "Our thing is let's get the record done, then we'll find the best home for it," Jam explains. "We want to go with somebody who's a big fan and is really going to appreciate what we're doing." With the 30th anniversary of its first album coming in 2011, the group also has interest in a retrospective and possibly revamping and reissuing its back catalog.

Day says Time fans will not be surprised by the new songs, which he describes as "hard to classify. It's got funk and it's got rock. It's cool, sexy music with attitude." Jam adds that the group has "15 songs, and we probably really love 10 of them -- and that varies from day to day as we listen, honestly." Song titles include "Stingy," "Strawberry Lake" and "If I Were Your Man," and some of the material dates back to writing that began after "Pandemonium" was released. "We didn't anticipate we wouldn't make another album for 20 years," Jam explains. "Most of those ideas are still valid ideas."

Jam says the new material "is definitely funky" and promises that "there's definitely going to be some extended jams on there. We've never been into writing three-minute songs. Our three-minute songs always turn into six minutes; there might be three minutes of song and three minutes of a groove and we don't want to lose any of the groove. Some songs we can certainly edit down to single length, but on the album we're going to leave the grooves intact."

The Time -- which also includes guitarist Jesse Johnson, keyboardist Monte Moir, drummer Jellybean Johnson and hype man Jermone Benton -- is in the midst of a four-date Stingy Tour, which recently played in Las Vegas and will bring the band to its longtime stronghold of Detroit on June 11 and a homecoming show on June 13 in Minneapolis. "It's good creative fuel for us to perform live," Jam says, "and then we can get back in the studio and bring that energy with us." Jesse Johnson, meanwhile, will spend the summer touring to promote his latest solo album, "Verbal Penetration Vol. I & II" and plans to open for the Time when it tours in earnest to promote the new album.

Day, who still leads an adjunct of the Time that includes Moir and Johnson, says that The Time's prospects after the album's release are "yet to be revealed."

"We all have busy careers and lives and families and all of that now," he says. "Whether everybody is going to be able to go out there on the road and do this like we used to is questionable. But we're definitely going to put a tour together and drop this music and see where it goes."

They said several versions are finished. I think they are holding out for a major label release, but by now they should've given us something. A track on myspace at least.

I really wonder about these deluxe reissues they evoke in the interview. Obviously Prince will have the masters of the 3 first albums back by 2014 and then they'd have 2 deal with him, unless they do it VERY quickly with WB b4 Prince gets the 1st album back by the end of next year... but that would mean no remasters and no bonus tracks so i hardly see the point...

Lmao U straightened me out on that sorry. I think Prince may already have back at least the first The Time album. But even if he didn't. He still should have control over what happens to them. Since there really his music anyway. Warners just owns the masters not the publishing of those songs....

I can't wait to see what Prince does with all of this. He has a potential gold mine on his hands... I think he knows this since he has been playing a lot of The Time's songs lately. As if to remind everyone that there really his songs and the money is going to be going in his bank account...lol

I'm a huge Time fan but.....

The Time was great when Prince was great. It was great getting more of the Prince sound.

Even if Prince was involved now, he's lost his touch a long time ago. I look forward to his new albums for the same reason I keep up with my college teams games. Nostalgia.

I like the members of the time as cool as they are, but not a fan of their solo works. I like the first Janet album, but never felt the following ones.

So if anything, a new Time album feels more like a family re-union where you get to see your uncle and see how much weight he's gained or hair he's lost and enjoy the same funny stories you have heard a million times.

I look forward to a new Time CD as much as I look forward to a new Appolonia or Vanity 6 cd

Would Prince get The Time masters back, though? We all know what he did in the background but who actually signed all the contracts for the band itself?

I don't know exactly but i'm sure that Prince legally owns the stuff: he even owns the band's NAME (they had 2 ask him his agreement 2 b able 2 release this 4thcoming album on their own). Also, 4 exemple, Prince was able 2 have the video 4 Mia Bocca removed from Jill Jones' page (she was mad and posted a blog about it) and he released or streamed several released and unreleased "associated artists" material on his own site, clearly showing that he considered it "his" material. And anyway Prince is factually the only person 2 have the original multi-tracks in his possession, and these are essential 4 a remastering.

Now i don't know how far it goes. I'm sure he owns everything from his side-projects, but what about the songs he gave 2 non-protégés? Could he claim Sugar Walls or So Strong? Technically he recorded everything but the vocals on these songs and many others, but what i don't know is WHO can legally claim the masters of a song after 30/35 years (the performer? the producer? the composer? every artist involved?). As far as i'm concerned, the more he can get back the better.

I was somewhat disappointed with the last Time album ('Pandemonium') so I'm gonna take a wait-and-see approach with this one.Their best albums are the first one and the second one.
