She sent me the book (via PDF) and I was not impressed with the poetic style and the cursive writing. It's just too much.
Sorry, but the notion of wanting to interview a woman who has been in Evangelist for years now without the "Jesus talk" is ludicrous. Its like wanting to interview Stevie Wonder without all of the "music talk" or President Obama without all of the "political talk".
Its probably a good thing you didn't because that's a poor attitude for an interviewer to have. You can't take a person out of who they are just to suit your own desires. Your interview probably would have turned out more like that recent Sheila E. interview where the guy just wanted to ask her about her relationship with Prince. You dismiss her lifestyle change as something trivial when it was actually something pivotal for her. Sounds like a TMZ style interviewing attitude to me.
I'm not trying to clown you, I'm just saying that if you know who she is now, you know what you're going to get if you try to interview her, so its unreasonable to expect anything different. She's not going to break out and say "Oh, did I tell you about the time John Stamos, Gene Simmons and I had a three way in the trailer on the set of "Never Too Young To Die?" Yeah, that's the interview we'd ALL like to hear but at this point, we know it ain't EVER gonna happen; so why even try?
BlaqueKnight: Get offa my tip!
Denise has given the same exact interview over and over again. I wanted to take the interview in another direction and I didn't want it to be filled with religious talk and I didn't want to talk about Prince. Besides, the lady had already given me a serious attitude talking about how "I got all these people buggin' me for interviews and I got 1500 books that need to be signed and mailed out!" as if she was doing me a favor and the tripped out thing is SHE CONTACTED ME! She's going on and on about how everyone is asking her about Prince and everyone wants to talk about Nikki Sixx and I'm like "Okay Denise, let's just talk about life in general." As a journalist, you control the tone and the vibe of the interview. Truth of the matter is yes, it is. When you try to get too deep with people, you have a tendency to lose them. It's like she's trying too hard with the writing and I am afraid that people will not be interested in what she has to say because it will go over their heads. Just write. Just sit down and write the book is what I say. BTW... I got PDF copies to share. "Haters wanna hate/ lovers wanna love/ I don't even want/ none of the above/ I want to piss on you... " |

Denise is not crazy for not fully embracing homosexuality with open arms. She is also not crazy for having a belief in any kind of diety. She has chosen a way of life for herself that motivates her and that's how it is for her. Just as many people don't accept religion and it has become the "in" thing to be athiest, there are also those who are strictly "bible thumpers" like Miss Matthews and believe the way they do. Its all a part of different walks of life. It seems she has chosen a lifestyle that is very restrictive for her because she may feel she needs discipline and the best form for her is in the church. In turn, she seems to be detremined to find that same discipline that worked for her and lead them to it. She's not calling for the heads of gays; as a matter of fact, she seems just as much against sex outside of marriage (if not more so) than she is active homosexuality. She said "straight or gay, sex outside of marriage is a sin", so if that's the type of discipline she believes in then maybe that's what works for her and what she believes might work for others. SHe believes God saved her life. Her behavior is exactly what one would expect of someone who feels eternally grateful for saving their life.
Well put.
I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who, while demanding not just tolerance, but out-and-out acceptance of their own beliefs, are so intolerant of others.
She's not tolerant. She totally dissed Buddhism or any other religion but the one of her Jesus.
Why should anyone be tolerant or accepting of her? She's clearly past the point of healthy enthutsiam for her religion. Fuck her.
And she went for the gays (subtly) with the only one man/one woman shit is "natural" before the subject even being brought up. She was asked about celibacy. And thank you, God, for casting AIDS upon us. DOUBLE Fuck her.

Sure she says neither straight nor gay should "sleep around" but she also manages to get in there:
"I say that if you wanna come to Jesus but you don't wanna be with a woman then don't. DON'T BE WITH NOBODY."
Nice.
PS. Denise, it's not sleepin around that gives people diseases, it's doing so without protecting themselves or their partners. You can sleep with one person and minimize your chances but there is no Moral Guarantee. What do you say to the loyal person who's only slept with their spouse but turns up with something because their partner strayed? Sorry, be strong, it's God's plan?
Why did I even listen to this crap?

Exactly, she's not tolerant of ANYTHING that she doesn't agree with, yet we're supposed to be tolerant of her??? Doesn't work that way sweetie. And yes, she may not have directly attacked gays, but she was subtly getting her little digs in with the "natural" bullshit talk and said if you're gay, then don't sleep with a woman (and don't sleep with nobody). |

But I am of the opinion that there is more to Denise Matthews than what she has given us and maybe their isn't so I left it alone. I didn't wanna talk the usual stuff and I have been able to talk about things with other celebrities that you don't normally hear about. That's real journalism. As a result, I passed on the interview and I didn't lose any sleep over it. Life goes on and trust me when I say I have talked to people much bigger than Denise Matthews.
How do you like THEM apples?
LMAO!! Exactly - it's the SAME damn interview each time. Even when interviewers try to ask questions she hasn't been asked a million times, she tip-toes around or just flat-out changes the question into something totally different. I'm not surprised she was going off on you for no reason - she flies off the handle for no reason all the time. What I think is creepy is how in all of these interviews when she flies off the handle, she gives a little creepy fake laugh at the end of her rants. And does she not realize that the interviews are more than anything helping HER by promoting her book? |

I always try to have some conversation with my subjects before the actual interview just to get a good vibe and Denise was all over the place! It was just too much and I didn't wanna go through the motions. She cuts you off when you try to speak and she thinks she knows everything. My thing is all the Jesus talk and who's to say that she may have Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist admirers who just wanna hear her speak? It just wasn't worth it. What blows me away is how she still hasn't understood that if you want to "save" people and turn them to God, it's not a good idea to do it by yelling at them and being rude and cutting them off and acting like you're right and you're wrong, end of story. Did she have anything new to say when you spoke to her or was it just the same old, same old?
Like I said before, she needs to learn some manners and say, "Excuse me" when she wants to interrupt or better yet, wait until the other person is done talking. |

My whole point was that you know that's what she's about. You aren't going to get anything different from her. Its that very reason that I myself haven't bothered with the book. The story you want from her isn't going to be the one she's going to tell, no matter what it is. She is a hardcore bible thumper now. There's nothing wrong with that; it works for her. But, knowing that is the direction she has taken her life, its kinda pointless thinking that an interview with you would be any different than with anyone else. Homegirl's a hardcore "soldier for the Lawd" now and that's all you are going to get from her.
And to those who mentioined religious tolerance: most religions don't teach or preach tolerance of other religions. Religion is not about being politically correct. Many wars have been fought over religion throughout history. Tolerance has never been a strong point of the major religions because they all believe they are right, and if they are right - then the others are wrong. That's just the way it is.
For what its worth, I'd love to read the first draft of the book; the one without all of the babble. If I wanted to read scriptures, I'd pick up a bible, a Qu'ran, a Torah, etc., and so on... |

Sorry but I still believe that her problem is a long, undiagnosed mental illness more than anything and I don't say that because she's extremely religious. IMO, she was very troubled/self destructive way before she got saved, but nobody noticed or cared because they were all into the t&a, including her so called friends. The extreme religiousity is a coping mechanism/refuge for her.
On top of that, she fried her brain and almost killed herself with drugs and will probably be in recovery for the rest of her life.
So tell me again why people are expecting coherence from someone who isn't capable of it??? Anyone who's ever really listened to her for any length of time could tell she isn't of sound mind.

It's possible! Supposedly he had a sexual or romantic relationship with John. I wouldn't be surprised if he fooled around in his younger days like a lot of us do. Not that it matters. He could still be gay and hate gays. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu |

If I were an interviewer,I wouldn't interview her either. She thinks that her story is so important and relevent but the truth is,the only people who are interested in her are the Prince fans who remember her from the Vanity 6 days. She seems to think that she is more famous than she really is.Furthermore,I don't find anything unique about her story. It's just the same ol' rock and rock tragedy tale.....fame and fortune, drugs, sex, career decline and then a religious "rebirth" where they become enlightened. You can read this same kinda stuff in numerous rock and roll biographies.
Her story is important. It's how she came to God. It's how God saved her. If she can just reach one person with her story, that's great. True enough her book may not be for everyone. If your not a fan. Just don't read. No need to bash her!!!!
Why not?
She took the opportunity in this interview to get her digs (unecessarily, she could've just stuck to her personal story) at other religions and gays.
I'm sorry, but the importance of someone's story is diminished for me when they choose to put others down as part of their "testimony".

I agree, and this is one problem that I have with extremely religious people. They get on a moral high horse and start putting other people down. They think they're better than everyone else. |
