Just listened to the Vanity 6 album for the first time... I had heard Appolonia 6 in the 80s but this is the first time I heard Vanity 6. I don't hear much difference... Both Vanity and Appollonia speak/sing through the songs... The music is good but not great. I think that other artists before Vanity's time did it much better and sexier! Does any one remember Donna Summer with "Love to Love Ya Baby," "Bad Girls," and "Hot Stuff?" Plus so many other ladies and girl groups! Donna Summer was hot in the 70s! No one could top her sex appeal then! So, why is/was Vanity considered so hot--except for her exceptional looks and the fact that she was hooked up with Prince?! I'm puzzled. My post is in response to others who have raved about Vanity 6. I'll take Donna Summer any day!

well yeah....of course,Donna Summer is more talented than Vanity 6 and she was doing the whole 'sex' thing long before the world ever heard of Prnce and his sex-obsessed proteges,lol.

I was just wondering if anyone could make that pic of Donna just a bit larger. I don't think I can definitively count how many lashes are on her left lid.

I guess this thread might appear useless to people who are familiar with Vanity--but since I just listened to her for the first time and have read about people raving about her, I just wanted to point out that other artists, including Donna Summer, did all that first and better IMO. That is the relevance.

No, they can't fuck with a bad bitch like Donna Summer but they are definately better than folks like Shitney Houston or other female artists that followed her that actually can sing but are boring as hell. Singing capability means much less to me than throwing down capability.

And there is really no need to go anykind of negative on Vanity 6, or Vanity. Yes, people had done all kinds of sexually explicit material before V6, but you could have the same thread with a title like "Donna Summer Can't Compare to ..."

Frankly you have no idea about the brilliance and impact that album had unless you were in a 76 Scirroco with a pack of friends and the Kind, on your way to see An Officer And A Gentleman, when Nasty Girl comes blasting through your ears for the first time; or _____ (your story here.) There was power in those moments and it sprouted from the textures and tones and smells of the time. I find that considering relative context is really important when seeking insight into anything.

Throwing down capacity is right. Vanity 6 was holding it down on that bill where they opened up for The Time and Prince like a motherfunker. And while I love Love LOVE Donna, she can't begin to touch some of what Vanity brought to the stage. Apples and Oranges!
