I was listening to Boni Boyer laying down some vocals on an aftershow gig back in 1988 a few days ago and wondered this. Why didn't Prince sign her up to his label and record some albums. This woman could really sing. I remember attendng the Lovesexy Tour in 88'{and she had some stellar moments during the time Prince gave her the spotlight}.

Kind of funny, considering some of the women he signed to his label for albums and they didn't have half the vocal pipes that this woman had. Wonder why LIL MAN didnt go in the studio with her... Build some funky, soulful arrangements among her powerful vocals. I think the results would have been quite impressive.

Perhaps the band broke up before he could get around to it. Or perhaps Boni wasn't interested.

I don't know, but Boni was great.

I think it may have been because Paisley Park Records was a vanity label really run by Warner Bros. Records at the time.

I too was kind of thinking what the heck were doing signing Good Question? and others like The Three O'Clock?

they weren't that cool overall.He liked Her vocals&wasn't that crazy about Her Keyboard work overall.there was some friction there.Prince went through His I want My Own Aretah Singer.Boni,Rosie,Loud&trying too get the Church Vibe&they were laying it on too thick IMHO.it would have been Cooler if Prince had have gone after Vesta Williams but Prince enjoys the Show of the Business as much as He as He Enjoys His Music.you can tell by some of the choices.

I've always wondered the same thing too.Let's face it,for the most part,Prince was more interested in signing female artists who were known more for their looks than for having genuine talent.It's a shame that he didn't produce a solo album for Boni,and that a planned album with Rosie Gaines never came out.

I had read somewhere that she had a coke problem...maybe he distanced himself from her because of that?

He could've done really well with a Boni Boyer album, perhaps even gained some credibility for Paisley Park.

IN the modern video age, great pipes and a fat ass is not going to sell. You can make it better with a great rack and no skills if you are a female singer. Ask Madonna, the chick from No Doubt, the chick from C and C Music Factory, Britteny Spears, and almost every chick from the Prince camp. Bonnie was way fat.
