"Verbal Penetration" by Jesse Johnson Man, I CANNOT STOP listening to this project!!!!! Anyhoo- I know that Jesse said he was most in tune w/Curtis Mayfield when putting together this project. And the Hendrix/Hazel comparisons won't stop. HOWEVER- Am I the ONLY one that hears Stevie Wonder in the chorus and groove of Verbal Penetration?????

This would have been a solid 1 disc album. The first disc meanders along well enough but that second disc is burdened down with crap - I bet over half of it is spoken word nonsense that isnt even Jesse. And whe he does it, it is an embarrasingly self serving fake interview. I mean who includes a staged interview on a record in which the intervier tells them they smell good?? And what is all ranting from the black woman about Moors? After the first minute of that, who gives a shit?
It is am impressive stretch - just a bit much of a stretch. In over reaching and verging into te realm of pretentiousness, Jesse did manage to touch on some gems. "Ali vs Frazier" showcases the versatility of the most unsung guitar hero of our age - and it does so without all the traditional rock n roll posturing that so many make obligatory. However, I do find myself skipping around the tracks looking for something that will just peel my cap back with guitar like Brand New Day or SHock To The System from Bare My Naked Soul. I an glad to finally see something from Jesse. I am just glad I downloaded it for free. | |

The ones that knocked me out were were "My Life", "I Miss", "Cry Like The Skies","Bella Bella", and "You Don't Love Me The Same". It seems like on "Bare" Jesse just said "Fuck the bullshit, I'm gonna cry thru the music." Where on "Verbal" he's gotta re-introduce himself and try and please every segment of the audience old and new. I'm glad 2 hear him makin music again after all these years, but I hope he's in another all out funk/rock mood again next album.... [Edited 2/1/10 19:52pm] | |

jesse gave up on funk as soon as the 90s hit.

I have not gotten past disc 1, yet. But that's only because disc 1 is straight up good. It ain't the Funk I was hoping for, but it does have elements of the classic Minneapolis Sound. I can't get over what Jesse was able to do with the Musicology vibe. It's like he stripped all the bullcrap out of Prince's new sounds and mixed it with the Sign Of The Times feel. It's hard to believe Prince is not on this record because it sounds like he is, but if he's not he should get with Jesse for his next album. | |

Right - Prince needs to get with all of his old associates all the time - throw in Wendy adn Lisa as well. They are all doing so great without him... Artistically, they are - Wendy & Lisa and Jesse that is. Much better artistically than Prince has been doing - though admittedly that's not very difficult the last 20 years or so. I LOVE Verbal Penetration. I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Its reminded me of how much I missed old skool funk with that touch of nastiness in the sound. For the longest time now Prince's music has seriously lacked a bad-ass edge. Verbal Penetration has a bad-ass streak to it that makes all the difference. Right - Prince needs to get with all of his old associates all the time - throw in Wendy adn Lisa as well. They are all doing so great without him... Yeah he seriously does. Jesse just dropped a classic. I hope Prince is taking note. His buddy Jesse just one upped him, big time. No joke. The mixes on Verbal Penetration are outstanding. The songs are fun, the guitars on point. You get some blues, some R&B, some rock and funk and some classic Time sounds, yet the record sounds cohesive and nothing sounds forced or out of place. I can find dozens of sweet spots in the music. And more importantly his rebuke of the monetizing of negative racial stereotypes in music, or hip-hop as some of you call it, is like soup for the soul. I love the track about the N-word! But I don't want to say too much until I listen to the tracks more.  | |

Thinking of the 2nd disc like liner notes would mean at some point you would have to realize that you just got ripped off for a 2 disc set with 1 disc worth of real music. Since when do you pay for a second disc just to get liner notes? Liner natoes are supposed to be free! So I will leave that thinking to the less enlightened and maintain my position that this album should have been one disc and, to that extent, is a slight disappointment after repeated plays. | |

It still took up 2 discs - This is Jesse Johnson; not Beyonce. He wasnt exactly moving boatloads of units. The amount of material is not worth 2 discs or the price of one disc (as the price of one disc is ridiculous today anyway). I didnt pay for it since it was readiily available online for nothing - and I still feel a loss for the 2 blank CD-Rs I used to burn it. Not only was Verbal Penetration the best record I heard in 2009 but it was better than anything I've heard Prince do in YEARS. YEARS! At least a decade. And as for the 2nd disc - he wasn't speaking to everyone with it. Its understandable why some would turn a deaf ear to it. I got it. Others did/will, too. Some music is entertainment, some is about expression. Jesse was expressing himself. It was a solid TWO DISC record. [Edited 2/4/10 13:34pm] | |

Even my van driver likes disc 1 after I left it in one day.. to get old Pat to ask me to burn a copy off was deemed as one of my greatest achievements. Shockadelica (still my favourite) didn't go down quite as well though. Maybe I will try a bit of Ingrid Chavez next week and see how white van man copes with that. | |

And all the preaching that P did on that CD, but y'all didn't say SH*T!!!!! U kissed his ass like U always do!!!!! Let Jesse do his thang!!!! To me, P hasn't put out anything substansially solid since MUSICOLOGY. Everything else has been spotty at best. VERBAL PENETRATION musically SH*TS on anything P has done since MUSICOLOGY!!!! And don't get it twisted- I'm a HUGE fan of BOTH!!!!! | |
