And all the preaching that P did on that CD, but y'all didn't say SH*T!!!!! U kissed his ass like U always do!!!!! Let Jesse do his thang!!!!
To me, P hasn't put out anything substansially solid since MUSICOLOGY. Everything else has been spotty at best.
VERBAL PENETRATION musically SH*TS on anything P has done since MUSICOLOGY!!!!
And don't get it twisted- I'm a HUGE fan of BOTH!!!!!
cool cool cool

I'd take 3121 MPLSound and Lotusflow3r over Verbal Penetration anyday.

Verbal Penetration would have made a great 1 CD album but disc two is full of complete crap.

If Prince had put a fake asskissing interview on an album he would be getting ripped to shreds, and that songs about some underground music club is ok for one listen but after that is just a bore, and again Jesse is kissing his own ass.

Shame he put Get Next to you on disc two.

Disc 2 is good too. Not a lot of hook and verse songs on there, but the tracks are still well produced and entertaining. D'angelo, Lenny Kravitz, Sananda, Prince, Raphael Saadiq... it's been a minute since they brought it like Jesse did.

A good friend of mine and I would ALWAYS have a debate over who the BETTER Guitarist was between P & Jesse. I would ALWAYS side w/Jesse. His only retort?? "Well P is the BETTER SONGWRITER!!!!!"
.....NOT ANYMORE!!!!!
cool cool cool
p.s.: SueAnn & Kim sound REAL GOOD on the CD as well!!!!! Eddie M. too!!

A friend of mine just gave me this jem and I have to admit I am in love with "Verbal Penetration". Prior post have touched on Curtis M, Prince, Stevie, and other artist and I have to agree. When I first put cd#1 in...I noticed the taste of Prince in the beginning, enough I had to giggle. My favorite as of this momment would be "Merciful" #6, where Jesse shows his women;) no mercy. From the first momment I heard this the only thing I wanted to do was put on my workout clothes and hit the dancing pole eek ....go figure! HOT!

This double album beggged me to ask WTH have I been and pushes me to go back and look into past albums. Mr. Johnson shows his self as a member of group of fine musicians and writers; The MPLSound, Likewise showing Prince is not the only one with talent and skills from Minne. Go Jesse, I see you know what time it is.

I have not gotten past disc 1, yet. But that's only because disc 1 is straight up good. It ain't the Funk I was hoping for, but it does have elements of the classic Minneapolis Sound. I can't get over what Jesse was able to do with the Musicology vibe. It's like he stripped all the bullcrap out of Prince's new sounds and mixed it with the Sign Of The Times feel. It's hard to believe Prince is not on this record because it sounds like he is, but if he's not he should get with Jesse for his next album.

I see I am not alone with not getting past CD#1. I totally love how this disk starts out. Total Funk!

I am as well - because I wasnt going to pay money for it. This way I heard it when I would not have otherwise. Artists want to be heard.

yeah- they can eat and pay bills on you "hearing" them. Guess you can't admit to straight up stealing.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Right - Prince needs to get with all of his old associates all the time - throw in Wendy adn Lisa as well. They are all doing so great without him...

Artistically, they are - Wendy & Lisa and Jesse that is. Much better artistically than Prince has been doing - though admittedly that's not very difficult the last 20 years or so.

I LOVE Verbal Penetration. I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Its reminded me of how much I missed old skool funk with that touch of nastiness in the sound. For the longest time now Prince's music has seriously lacked a bad-ass edge. Verbal Penetration has a bad-ass streak to it that makes all the difference.

You hit it dead on. THat interview is beyong an embarrassment - I love Jesse just like the homer who posted before this one but when something that lame and self serving is actually placed on a second disc with some much other crap, I have to call it.

Now its time for YOUR medication. Its a SKIT. Lots of artists do it. Prince does to and some of his skits are ridiculous, too. Get over it. Now run along and listen to that boring ass 3121 and the 3 disc set that doesn't even have a disc's worth of good material on it. Let the rest of us WHO GOT THE MATERIAL ON THE 2ND DISC enjoy the entire compilation that is Verbal Penetration. Prince ain't crankin' out shit like this and hasn't for a very long time. The Rainbow Children isn't on par, either.

I completely agree with BlaqueKnight's assessment. The interview is for fun - and I, for one, enjoy the heck out of it. Plus you get some info like the fact that he intends to tour and that he'll play songs from throughout his career in his live sets. You also get to find out the gear he's using live and in the studio, who his favorite guitarists are, his thoughts on The Time and the MPLS Sound in general. I love that stuff.

And, musically, the album does indeed destroy anything Prince has done in ages.
the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

I'm well aware it's a skit, but it goes on forever, it's harly something you are going to listen to time and time again. I hate skits whoever it is. The Exdous album for me was ruined by stupid skits.

My point is there's enough material on Verbal to make a great album but the thing is two long. Disc 2 for the most part is a bore to me. I'ts got one track that is the credits for gods sake, do you really sit through that each time?

So for Me Jesse failed to make a truly listenable album from start to finish.

I wouldnt go that far..plus look how long JJ took to release anything new...over a decade?....P has trax from TRC/3121/Lotus that are just as good or better....I like the sound of JJ new album, much deeper and you can tell he has grown musically compared to his 80's & 90's output.

Think of the 2nd cd as a audio version of LINER Notes.

Thinking of the 2nd disc like liner notes would mean at some point you would have to realize that you just got ripped off for a 2 disc set with 1 disc worth of real music. Since when do you pay for a second disc just to get liner notes? Liner natoes are supposed to be free! So I will leave that thinking to the less enlightened and maintain my position that this album should have been one disc and, to that extent, is a slight disappointment after repeated plays.

You stole both discs anyways, so what do you really care? I don't feel ripped off and love this release.

Yeah he seriously does. Jesse just dropped a classic. I hope Prince is taking note. His buddy Jesse just one upped him, big time. No joke. The mixes on Verbal Penetration are outstanding. The songs are fun, the guitars on point. You get some blues, some R&B, some rock and funk and some classic Time sounds, yet the record sounds cohesive and nothing sounds forced or out of place. I can find dozens of sweet spots in the music. And more importantly his rebuke of the monetizing of negative racial stereotypes in music, or hip-hop as some of you call it, is like soup for the soul. I love the track about the N-word! But I don't want to say too much until I listen to the tracks more. biggrin

It will never get the mainstream acclaim it truly deserves, because it's an indie record or whatever. This is the type of record I think Prince has been trying to make for 20 years now, but couldn't pull it off. Don't hate on Jesse, because his record is better than Prince's last 20 albums. If you're bored go to Target and stock up on more of those suckazz $4.99 Lotusflower cd's that you keeping begging people to give another chance. lol
