VANITY 6: If a Girl Answers: Prince moonlighting Ya'll remember the total jam 'If a Girl Answers, Don't Hang Up' by Vanity 6? The Time did an amazing job playing on that entire album. Props to the boys.
But you remember the part where Vanity & Brenda argue with some boy/girl. That was Prince. V-'Hello, this is Vanity. Is Jimmy home'? P-'He just got out the shower' V-'Oh I see, did he just take out the trash' P'No thats something he used to do. Now he's taking out me' And it goes on. That part about 'He was swallowing Vitamin E, now he's swallowing me', is hella funny. Very 80's but love it and still a funky piece of work. The Time rule baby. Genius is born, not made. Prince is a Genius. No question. RIP Legend.

If I weren't a lady,I'd take my money and buy you a brand new face Then I'd take my underwear, stick it in your mouth, and you'd love it cuz you got no taste And if that don't work, call back at that daddy and show 'em what you look like now Honey,I'll bet he'd never come back cuz you one ugly cow!

The Time barely played anything on the V6 album.
90% of what you hear on that album was played by Prince. |

It's been stated on numerous occasions by associates and people that were around.
If you read any credible Prince biography, such as Per Nilsen's "DanceMusicSexRomance" for example, this is stated and everything written in that book is sourced from numerous places. On the Vanity 6 album, "If A Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up)" was written by Prince and Terry Lewis, "Bite The Beat" was written by Prince and Jesse Johnson, and "He's So Dull" was written by Prince and Dez Dickerson. Everything else on that record was written, produced, and played by Prince. |

So again, (and i'm really not trying to be difficult) if the song was written by Prince and Terry Lewis as you said, how do you know it was Prince and not Terry that did the voice? Is that in a book somewhere that Prince did that voice? http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

I don't have any proof to answer your question, but I think it's Prince myself.

The reason I say the Time played on the album is because that episode I watched Vanity said in the interview that the Time played on the album. It came from her own mouth while Brenda & Susan stood right by her & nodded their heads to agree.
The deal about Prince doing the talking part is that I read it somewhere, I wish I could remember where, but it was in somebody's book. And one of his artists said he did it, I think it may have been Morris. But this is the only part I'm fuzzy on. It's interesting somebody said it sounded like Terry. My money's on P. 'All that's gonna fall is the wig off your head, now what you think about that?' Genius is born, not made. Prince is a Genius. No question. RIP Legend.

ButterScotch, I never stated either way whether it's Prince or Terry doing that voice.
My personal opinion is that it's Prince. Anyway "blue22" - to definitively clear this up, this is what Per Nilsen's "DMSR" book says: Vanity 6 Released 11 August 1982. All tracks composed by Prince except "If A Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up" (Prince/Terry Lewis), "Bite The Beat" (Prince/Jesse Johnson) and "He's So Dull" (Dez Dickerson), Dez Dickerson plays guitar and drums on "He's So Dull" (he also produced the session) and drums on "3 x 2 = 6". The Time are credited as players, but they did not have anything to do with the recording. |

Just my opinion:
Prince (on record) Terry (live)

It's on the record sleeve itself that The Time perform on the record, but it's just another of Prince's evasive credits on his productions. Militant posted the correct credits above.

that was Prince. Morris would have sounded way cooler.
The best part of the song is the comical dialogue. It sooooo needed a sequel.

this was a great track i always felt this song, along with "wet dream" would have been hits...it's a shame they were never released as singles.

I made a ring tone out of it! My friend and I would end up rolling on the floor laughing everyt me we played it.
I never could make out the "all that's gonna fall is the wig off your head" part. Probably cuz of the midwestern accent (or lack of East Coast accent!). It's kinda weird because 1) Prince is playing a woman (again! like in Vibrator!) 2) Vanity actually gets dissed..... which is weird cuz I think in reality Vanity wouldn't take shit from anybody! What does Vanity say afer "He was swallowing vitamin E now he's swallowing me" Oh you mean he's swallowing _____? Is the blank "Him"?

I'm positive its Prince's voice. I know Prince's voice when I hear it. Compare the voice with the voice on Cloreen Backonskin. Its Prince. I think Prince played all instruments but didn't want his name associated with the projects because it would take the attention off of the groups.
