Nick Jonas uses the old NPG band for a brand new Band

www.drfunkenberry.com

Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers will be releasing a side project in 2010 entitled “The Administration” and was recorded in a 2 week span.

The recording took place in Nashville, Tennessee. The band that Nick recorded with was some of Prince’s New Power Generation band from the 90’s including Michael Bland and Tommy Barberella and also a favorite of mine, David Ryan Harris, who usually tours with John Mayer.

Unfortunately, David Ryan Harris will not be touring with The Administration and is being replaced by Sonny Thompson, another former member of Prince’s band. Wow. First Justin Timberlake and now a Jonas Brother has a Prince backed band. There has been a Prince connection with the Jonas Brothers for a while however.

Bob Cavallo, who used to manage Prince under the management company Cavallo, Ruffalo, & Fargnoli back in the day, was The Jonas Brothers saving grace. They released a debut album to dismal sales. Cavallo gave the record a listen and contacted his friends at Hollywood Records and said they need to sign this group now. They took Bob’s advice and within a year later, were selling out arena’s everywhere and will be playing again with Stevie Wonder later this month.

No word if Nick will be covering any Prince material on the tour but I am dying to hear him try singing P. Control “The Most Beautiful Girl In The World” or something. Um. Just had a vision of how that sounded and looked so I take it back.

The band will debut on December 2nd for the Grammy Special on CBS and the CD entitled “Who I Am” will debut on Feb. 2nd.-Dr.FB
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

That's the disadvantage of Prince having so many great backing musicians, eventually if you're not going to use them regularly either in the studio or on stage someone else will hire them for work. It would be dope for Prince to keep Bland, Thompson and the other members of NPG on retainer but that's too expensive, especially when he plays concerts as infrequently as he does and not promote his records the way he should. Nick Jonas is cool, but I don't care who fronts that band they will never come close to the way Prince played and sanged with them cats.

Watching Michael B, Sonny T. and Morris Hayes back Prince on "Dreamer" from the Jay Leno show and the Conga Room show only affirms that he when he plays rock-oriented music it brings the best out of him; he sings with much more forcefulness and intensity and his musicianship is better because he's playing off of other people.

Will the NPG have to wear Purity Rings?
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Man, it's all money, so it's good that Michael B. and Sonny T. are earning it.

For what it's worth, Prince always has stepped up a gear when he plays with them. The best rhythm section he has ever had, easily.

Any musician associated with Prince would be someone highly sought out in the industry.

Say what you want about Prince's studio output, but when it comes live shows, there is really nobody in his league other than maybe a handful other bands, notably the E Street Band.

I wonder if the CD was produced by John Field. He was a member of Greazy meal, lives in the twin cities again I believe and had been around the MPLS scene for years. He does a fair bit of stuff for Hollywood including that Demi Lovato (??) kid.

And that's all that counts in this situation.
Extremely talented brothas like them allow people to leech off them in order for them to fund other projects.
It like when Greg Howe played with Justin Timberlake in order to fund his Extraction CD with Dennis Chambers and Victor Wooten. A means to an end.

• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

lol My wife forwarded me an article about Nick Jonas since it mentioned the NPG so I was about to create the millionth to-be-locked thread here about it!!!!
LMFAO

Anyway, if you're interested, it's about him playing at the Beacon Theater on Thursday.

Though Nick Jonas, the youngest and most musical of the Jonas Brothers, is looking to establish himself as a more serious artist with his new band The Administration, the 17-year-old clearly hasn't lost his ability to drive his young fans (and some of their parents) wild.

Even though the bulk of his 90-minute set Thursday came from his solo debut "Who I Am," which won't even be in stores until Feb. 2, he still got the crowd to help him with an extended version of the John Mayer-ish "Rose Garden" and "While the World Is Spinning."

But what really had the crowd swooning was Jonas' newly developed love of funk and soul. Though his version of Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" was good, his use of a Prince-ly falsetto and loads of funk guitar from his backing band, which includes three members of the New Power Generation, spiced up numerous songs, especially the new song "Stay," an all-out soul number somewhere between Al Green and Terence Trent D'Arby.

Tonight, Friday, 1/15, Nick Jonas and the Administration, are the house band for the 'VHI Critics Choice Awards" show. I'm sure VH1 will repeat the show this week. They did a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed Delivered" as the show went to commercial.
