Bare My Naked Soul

This is the only Jesse lp that I dont own. I am not at all into Hendrix , so I dont wanna waste 40 bucks if it all sounds like Hendrix. Is there any Funk or Soul on it at all?

Thanks
I know I got to be cooler than that cat you're sittin' with....

If you don't like Hendrix, do not buy Bare My Naked Soul. It's a serious guitar album.

Jesse says right off the bat, "It's almost like I'm tryin to do somethin a bit more guitar. You know just total guitar." But as hard as this album rocks,it also leans itself 2 Funkadelic's early Westbound albums like "Funkadelic", "Free Your Mind", "Maggot Brain" and "America Eats It's Young". Jesse also touches on Jimi's later sound with Band Of Gypsys which was very much soul influenced.

In my opinion... absolutely. But for soul, Verbal Penetration is the CD to get. For pop/funk/Minneapolis Sound, I lean toward Jesse Johnson's Review. "Special Love" is the shit.

I DEFINATELY agree that it's Jesse's best album as well but if you don't want to hear any Hendrix influenced axe then nah, this isn't the album for ya....

Merciful to me, is the best track on Verbal. Or I'll say it's my favorite. If you don't dislike Cry Like The Skies then maybe you need to get BMNS. But you were so "Ah HELL NAH...if it's anything like Hendrix, then fuck all that!..." razz But nah, I'm just fucking with you...On the real, if you're not THAT crazy about a heavy loaded guitar album with a lot of Hendrix influenced tracks....

When Jayquan said they weren't much into Hendrix as a pre-cursor to gettin this album, the first thing that came 2 my mind was the "Band Of Gypsys" album. lol . See people 4get that Hendrix wasn't all just cuttin heads and flash-your-chops all the time and neither is Jesse. He had songs like these too....

Message To Love is kinda hot. In all honesty my mother had some Hendrix in her collection and I used to try to to listen , but I heard no rhythm - it sounded like noise. That was many years ago , and I never gave dude another listen. I think im gonna shell out the 40 for BMNS. I been on my Jesse shit hard for the last week. Jesse ended my month long Marvin Gaye binge that I was on.....

Thanks again for the replies.....

Exactly...Jimi was very versatile as a songwriter as well as a guitarist.

It's a rock album and it's not one of my favorites. But I did have major respect for him at the time for switching gears and going in a completely different direction rather than selling out to the sorry shit that was all over R&B radio during that era. Wish I could still say the same today. lol

You could only call it a sell out if the music was all computers and autotune and he had 15 guests 4 23 tracks. Jesse is not only playin his ass off like the old days but his vocals ahve improved over the years too. Listen 2 the falsetto he uses on "Sheila Rae" and "Love Letters"

Granted, I must admit that I have always had a soft spot for Jesse's debut strictly because I was a kid and of the times. It was a very cool period overall. I remember seeing Jesse's videos "Be Your Man" and "I Want My Girl" on Night Tracks and shit. And then seeing Jesse on American Bandstand peforming "Can You Help Me" and "I Want My Girl" and Jesse playing a white left handed Strat upside down! Still to this day, one of my favorite songs by Jesse is "Free World".

I hear ya. Night tracks played some Cool shit and we didn't get BET out in the country so that was basically where you got to see stuff that wasn't played much or at all on MTV. I like the awards show thing he did too with Be your man and can you help me. Like you I have a soft spot for Revue since i was 15 when it came out and it does have three of his best songs plus the B side you mentioned that thumped harder than anything on the album.

I dig all his albums and even my least favorite one has a couple of my favorites by him. Jesse's the man

Merciful is amazing. However, you have to hear his instrumental 'nevermind saturn sunrise' on Bare My Naked Soul...awesome...it's not just guitar either ..very atmospheric.

BMNS is rock but it's funky b/c it's Jesse. I can't explain it but it's rock done like I like it. War Babies is a funky song, Monica is a SUPERBLY FUNKY song....

Oh, so now we're listing Jesse Johnson albums in order of favorites? lol OK, here's mine....

1. Jesse Johnson's Revue (Perfect from beginning to end)
2. Shockadelica (I like the first album better but just by a hair)
3. Every Shade Of Love (Slightly weaker than the first two but still great)
4. Bare My Naked Soul (The first two tracks are the main ones I listen to. Not much of a rock fan.)

I didn't buy the newest one.

This passed me by at the time, I wasn't on the internet and since I've been aware of it I've only ever seen it at over £40 which I can'justify spending on one album.

I regualarly look for it on the blogs but as of yet never come across it.

Would love to hear it.

For me, I'd switch that list just a tad:
1. Every Shade Of Love (it's truly versatile and very under-rated in its recognition of song writing skills)
2. Shockadelica (just funky)
3. Revue (the typical, but still awesome first post-Prince/Time solo record)
4. Bare My Naked Soul (It's tough to get into when you know Jesse as a funk guitarist type artist)

I've listened to the first half of Verbal Penetration. It's quite good. Much better than I had expected. I've not delved into the second half just yet.

The second disc drags, full boring monologues, does have obe to two decent songs.

It's an album that need to be ripped to one disc
