It's a very cool album. Classic Jesse. "Merciful" is my favorite on the album.

The more I listen to VP, the more impressed I am with it, particularly disc 1. More and more of the songs are growing on me and love the jazz overtones.

So, what do other listeners think of Jesse's strong social commentary on VP? Other than "Black in America", he had never really taken many socio-political stances. On this album, I was surprised how many of the songs (besides the more overt tracks like Slave 2 R Freedom and the Meditations) have a strong social message. I can't wait for the lyrics to be posted on his website.

He provided a message with the single Every Shade of Love but
not as much as he did with Black in America or Verbal Penetration.

it is the social commentary, throughout, that has be hooked even more than before. I would like to know who wrote the Slave 2 the Freedom song.

My. Fucking. God. How can he come back this hard? I missed Naked Soul so I feel I might have missed a developmental stage in this guy's work, but to go from Can U Help Me to Verbal Penetration is much hard work and all pay off. Groove and guitar smooth. Merciful made me cry. I do not just cry. I hope that Prince hears this. And listens. L I S T E N S.

Prince , you know I love you much, but you have not been challenged by another artist in a very long time and Jesse just threw it down; can u pick it up?

Buy this or you are stupid.

I agree with that...but i recall feeling the same way in 1996...I was hoping Prince would be challenged by BMNS. I still would not be surprised if P heard Jesse was about to release a serious rock disc and put Chaos out quickly ( just before if I recall).

i might get it in the future but as of right now i really dont care for it.

Wow. I think you're the first one who stated they didn't
care for it.
When i first heard over the summer he was
coming with a new release i wasn't expecting it to be an
epic album but without being biased i can honestly say
depth wise this is his most solid release. Hopefully it
will grow on you.

No, I was the first. I said it on the other thread after hearing the samples. Thank God for the samples because I would have been pissed if I had spent money on this. lol

The samples don't do it justice. After hearing them, I lowered my expectations but this is a truly incredible CD.

All I had to hear was those horrible modern sounding drum machines (the kind the shit hoppers and urban adult contemporary artists of today use) and all those slow to midtempo samples with only one uptempo song and that was enough for me to keep my money. I don't do adult contemporary or "neo soul". If it ain't hard funk or rock....NEXT!!!! lol

well i liked prince's latest stuff but i mainly made the reference because i was figuring that JJ might throw it back to the Linndrums and Synthesizers in a similar fashion.

the album is far too mellow for my taste but crying about it aloud wont change that fact.

Yeah, I love Linndrums but Prince didn't back them up with real drums and bass like he used to which gave the songs power and strength. And then to make things worse, he watered them down even more with shit hop slang and attitude which made me want to slam the damn CD up against the wall. lol

But I hear ya about Jesse's album being too mellow. I hate "mellow" and always have. I'm the type of person that only likes extremes in everything I do and music is no exception. I like songs on one end of the spectrum for the dance floor and the other end of the spectrum for the bedroom. In other words, I like to have fun and want fun to be going on 24/7. All the inbetween stuff that you just "sit and listen" to, I don't have time for and never have. I left the last two Barkays albums in the record store for the same reason.

my main issue with mplsound is the lack of classic 80s synth (such as Oberheim). the drums are all there but the "horns" are missing.

two of the people who have the power to rejuvenate that throwback style either half-assed it or gave up on it altogether

if The Time ever release a new album i can only hope it doesnt turn out like this.

There are 4 uptempo songs excluding the guitar instrumentals which i
think are excellent. I think you are way off base here talking about
the drum machines. I don't think they are any different than the ones
he used during his 80's heyday. If you don't consider Verbal Penetration,
Propaganda, and 100 Watts of Funky vintage Jesse,i don't know what is. As far
as the Neo Soul comment,i think it's just modernization. Are the songs you
consider Neo Soul much different from Do Yourself a Favor,Tonite,A Better Way,
and I'm Just Wanting You? I'm certain that most of Jesse fans realize he
can't stay stuck in the Minneapolis 80's era and sound dated. Jesse did a
good job of being Jesse by modernizing his sound into the new millenium.
Just my two cents.

the upside is there are MANY of these albums to listen to. I'd rather he go forward than the travesty that we heard on MPLSsound of not even understanding what made the style work. Let /Jesse move on- he not only deserves to as an artist but he kicked total ass on this cd.

i dont really mean it as a diss to JJ, its more of me not wanting the vaunted MPlS sound to fade into obscurity.

i know Prince's Control/Popularity influenced Jesse's earlier work but i really enjoy his twist on that certain style.

Besides Raphael Saadiq's "The Way I See It", I can't stop LISTENING TO IT!!!!!
That's right.....LISTENING TO IT. ARE Y'ALL LISTENING?????
This is FUNK, NEO-SOUL and ROCK with a MESSAGE- something that's SEVERELY missing in HIP-HOP and SOUL music!!!!!
The samples DON'T do the project justice as JD said. I'M LOVIN' IT!!!!!

But when music in general sounds the way it does today, the last thing I want is modernization. Modernization is good only if music in general has changed for the better but music in general sounds worse than it ever has in the history of this earth being existant.

As for Jesse not staying stuck in the 80s, stuck in the 80s is a good thing when you consider what music sounds like today. But if he wants to move on to something else, do hard rock like he did before, or do house, or do disco. Hell, even country music or classical symphony would be better than sounding like modern R&B. I wouldn't buy it but at least it wouldn't be selling out to today's R&B sound which I absolutely hate and want to see completely out of style. lol

I agree with moving on but the world hasn't moved on. The world is still stuck making the same type mess it has been making for over 15 years.

i dont think any of jesse's music is intended for children

all i wanted was atleast ONE groove.

i got zero.

and as far as that comment about the drum machines not being any different than classic 80s drum machines is totally off.

there is nothing today that you can compare to a Linn/DMX/SCI/ drummachine.

anyways its pretty obvious what my views on the project are and why it didnt spark my interest.

I hear ya wink

This is a great album, but I don't think its his best like some people have said. I'll still take Bare My naked Soul and maybe even Jesse Johnson's Revue. My favorite songs are the instrumentals. Hell I think In the key of Nudity could be a Time song if he added some lyrics like the rock tracks on Pandemonium.

I've been really excited about this album, but my expectations dropped after hearing the samples. If anybody is judging it simply by those, DON'T. Its alot better. The interludes, commentary and spoken word bits will be coming off the MP3 player. Cool to listen to a couple times, but they do get old after awhile. Alot of stuff going on and this is not a cd you play once and put up. You gotta play it it several times to pick up the subtle things going on. I like it more and more with each listen. Easily in my top 2 albums this year. Hopefully a tour actually happens
